Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TARGETS ARE LOCKED! Five short novels by five masters of military SF capture the excitement, and hell, of fantastic future war—on and off the battlefield. Stories of terrifying monsters, dangerous aliens and staggering cosmic dreadnaughts march alongside far-flung courtroom dramas and cautionary tales involving man and his devices. Michael A. Stackpole—The Star Tigers are commandeered by a powerful alien overseer on a covert mission to a world long abandoned by an ancient species. There, the ruins of a forgotten war will tip the balance of their war, unless the Star Tigers can prevent it. Sarah A. Hoyt—Lucius Dante Maximilian Keeva is a well-respected leader of the Usaian Revolution, but treason in the ranks can cost him everything that makes life worth living—unless he takes justice into his own hands and breaks every military regulation in its pursuit. Doug Dandridge—Faced with an enemy more than two hundred times her own size, Cinda Klerk has two options: hide, and let it destroy the planet she is supposed to protect, or find a way to even the odds and kill the enemy, even at the cost of her ship and crew. Eytan Kollin and Dani Kollin—As the Unincorporated War envelops the entire solar system, a father must come to the rescue of a daughter he never raised. But he'll have to convince her to save herself first. Kevin J. Anderson—In the war against an alien menace, Earth’s greatest military commanders risk themselves on the front lines, but with an escape hatch: If the situation goes terribly wrong, they can switch places with a safe soldier far from the battlefield. But the cannon-fodder volunteers don’t consider that such a good deal. Set your cross-hairs on the Target Zone.

Book excerpt: No Surrender: Building a Progressive Agenda for Iowa with the Five Securities by Jack Hatch “In an era of endless social media carping, the notion of why public service matters may seem quaint or even naïve to some. This book is about why, for progressive Democrats, nothing could be further from the truth. Dreaming of ways to improve the human condition for work-a-day Americans and their families is absolutely essential to our purpose and our survival as a political organization. The stakes are always the highest possible ones: the fate of our individual communities and the country we love. And the enemy is always the same: a status quo that tells us ‘not you,’ ‘not yet,’ ‘not that way,’ and ‘not now.’” “Jack Hatch provides a thought-provoking and challenging look into Iowa's future. His is a call for progressive action. He pulls no punches in calling for a new direction and approach for the Democratic Party if its leaders are to become Iowa’s leaders. A “must read” for anyone considering a run for higher office.” - Former Governor of Iowa Tom Vilsack “This book is highly revealing. It identifies, without concern of how it affects the feelings of those in power, absolute realities of why Democrats fall short of election goals during each cycle. The narrative represents a path by which the party can return to its historic role of being “the voice of the people.” And, unlike most, this book is definitive in laying out a plan for success. Jack Hatch has provided a map of the path we must follow. To ignore his challenge to become Progressives will only lead to party oblivion.” - Senator Dennis Black, Retired “I am impressed. Without resorting to a rant, Jack Hatch scolds Iowa Democrat leadership for their lack of courage in pressing for bold liberal goals and for surrendering their advocacy for the “melting middle class.” To his credit, Hatch does not exclude himself from past errors. The Five Security agenda he presents as his bold progressive vision for what Iowa can become is done so with compelling detailed specifics as to mission, process and structure. In fact, were his vision to come to be adopted and funded, I would move back to Iowa.” - Dr. Elliot Kline, PH.D Dean and Professor Retired

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern and current examination of Reconstruction that explains how the South in the aftermath of defeat in a total war, was still able to exhaust the will of the powerful North using asymmetric warfare. The end of the Civil War may have marked the end of the official fighting, but the Congressional strategy to remake the South during Reconstruction led to a new period of warfare—asymmetric warfare in which the defeated Confederacy became the Southern resistance. Despite all the power at its disposal, the North failed to change the South after nearly 11 years of effort and instead accepted a political-social equilibrium dictated by the South. This book presents Reconstruction through an unconventional lens to explain the process of transition from war to warfare, and finally to equilibrium represented by the emergence of the New South. Author Keith D. Dickson explains how Reconstruction created a false equilibrium in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War and was reversed by Congressional action that imposed a new social and political order. By resistance of these actions through asymmetric warfare, the white South was able to establish a new equilibrium—one dictated by the South that opened the path to the New South. Providing insights from an author who is both a respected academic military historian as well as a former practitioner of unconventional warfare as a Special Forces officer, the book covers the historical period 1865–1877, casting the Reconstruction period as an example of protracted asymmetric warfare. This asymmetric warfare was conducted in phases against the Republican state governments. As both the U.S. Congress and the Grant administration abandoned the lofty goals for Reconstruction, a bitterly contested presidential election provided the opportunity to establish conditions favorable to the white South that would in turn lead to a political-social equilibrium that allowed reconciliation to begin.

Book No Surrender

Download or read book No Surrender written by Patrick Bisher and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on Fox & Friends A Navy SEAL who first overcame a crippling childhood condition and then a devastating training accident offers his own experiences as lessons in defeating adversity. Patrick Bisher’s career as a Navy SEAL should have ended after a parachuting accident nearly crippled him. But overcoming adversity, even an injury as serious as a broken hip, was nothing new for him. He’d spent a portion of his childhood in leg braces. Doctors told him he’d never walk again thanks to a degenerative hip condition. He wasn’t about to give up then, any more than he was in the wake of that parachute training accident. Instead, he went on to serve in combat as a member of SEAL Team Seven, seeing action in Iraq and ultimately winning the Army Commendations Medal, among other awards. Now Patrick wants to take the lessons he learned on and off the battlefield and apply them to everyday life. He offers inspiration to all who’ve faced the kind of adversity he has. In chapters drawn directly from his own experience, he sketches a heart-wrenching tale of salvaging lifelong victories out of crushing defeats, and hope out of heartache. From being branded a “cripple” to successfully negotiating BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS) training, from agonizing pain to heroic achievement, from devastating loss to finding his faith, Patrick’s story is one of discovering ways to do everything he possibly can, instead of making excuses for what he can’t. An American hero who never surrendered is now sharing his lessons with those fighting their own battles to emerge from their dark places into the light and lead a better, more productive life.

Book Ten Per Cent and No Surrender

Download or read book Ten Per Cent and No Surrender written by H. I. Dutton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of industrial unrest in the cotton industry at a time when the economy was on the threshold of mid-Victorian prosperity, and when Chartism was still much more than a memory. The town of Preston was the crucial battlefield, and here the masters and men fought out a bitter trial of strength. The strike of 1853-54 closed the Preston cotton industry for seven months, and disrupted production in many other towns in Lancashire. Against the implacable opposition of the masters, the strikers toured the country to organize support, and raised £100,000 in subscriptions from their fellow operatives. The dispute featured prominently in the national and provincial press, and the weavers' delegates, notably George Cowell and Mortimer Grimshaw, became celebrities overnight. After five months, the employers brought in blackleg labour, and when the detested `knobsticks' failed to break the strike they had the operatives' leaders arrested. These moves did not deter the cotton workers, who were forced back to work only when their financial reserves were exhausted. Their campaign ended defiantly, as it had begun, with cries of `Ten Per Cent still, and no surrender'. This book is their story.

Book No Surrender

Download or read book No Surrender written by Hiroo Onoda and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1974, Second Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese army made world headlines when he emerged from the Philippine jungle after a thirty-year ordeal. Hunted in turn by American troops, the Philippine police, hostile islanders, and successive Japanese search parties, Onoda had skillfully outmaneuvered all his pursuers, convinced that World War II was still being fought and that one day his fellow soldiers would return victorious. This account of those years is an epic tale of the will to survive that offers a rare glimpse of man's invincible spirit, resourcefulness, and ingenuity. A hero to his people, Onoda wrote down his experiences soon after his return to civilization. This book was translated into English the following year and has enjoyed an approving audience ever since.
