Download or read book A Fistful of Shells written by Toby Green and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time the “Scramble for Africa” among European colonial powers began in the late nineteenth century, Africa had already been globally connected for centuries. Its gold had fueled the economies of Europe and the Islamic world for nearly a millennium, and the sophisticated kingdoms spanning its west coast had traded with Europeans since the fifteenth century. Until at least 1650, this was a trade of equals, using a variety of currencies—most importantly, cowrie shells imported from the Maldives and nzimbu shells imported from Brazil. But, as the slave trade grew, African kingdoms began to lose prominence in the growing global economy. We have been living with the effects of this shift ever since. With A Fistful of Shells, Toby Green transforms our view of West and West-Central Africa by reconstructing the world of these kingdoms, which revolved around trade, diplomacy, complex religious beliefs, and the production of art. Green shows how the slave trade led to economic disparities that caused African kingdoms to lose relative political and economic power. The concentration of money in the hands of Atlantic elites in and outside these kingdoms brought about a revolutionary nineteenth century in Africa, parallel to the upheavals then taking place in Europe and America. Yet political fragmentation following the fall of African aristocracies produced radically different results as European colonization took hold. Drawing not just on written histories, but on archival research in nine countries, art, oral history, archaeology, and letters, Green lays bare the transformations that have shaped world politics and the global economy since the fifteenth century and paints a new and masterful portrait of West Africa, past and present.

Download or read book A Fistful of Rice written by Vikram Akula and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2010-11-09 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the globe, poverty has held too many people in its grip for too long. While microfinance - small loans to impoverished individuals - initially attracted attention in the press, it didn't achieve the scale, scope, and profitability necessary to substantially combat poverty. All that changed with Vikram Akula's creation of SKS Microfinance. In this highly personal narrative, A Fistful of Rice, Akula reveals how he pieced together the best of both philanthropy and (to his surprise) capitalism to help millions of India's poor transition from paupers to customers to business owners. As thoughtful as Barack Obama's personal journey in Dreams from My Father, as harrowing as Paul Farmer's battle against infectious disease in Mountains Beyond Mountains, and as gripping as Greg Mortensen's fight for education in Three Cups of Tea, Akula's story shows how traditional business principles can be brought to bear on global problems in new ways. A Fistful of Rice offers not only inspiration but also lessons for anyone seeking to transform tenacity, creativity, and innovation into potent tools for fighting even the most seemingly intractable human burdens.
Download or read book A Fistful of Marigolds written by Joyce Worsfold and published by Fishcake Publications. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s the beginning of new school term in 1973 and Kathy Johnson needs a fresh start. Thirty, unmarried and an overworked teacher in a primary school on a run-down council estate, she is beginning to feel that life has passed her by. She needs to move on, but is still haunted by a tragic secret from her past. However, the disadvantaged people of Becklefield have problems of their own and it’s not long before Kathy is irresistibly, compassionately and sometimes unwillingly drawn into their tumultuous lives. A devastating fire; mice and marigolds, parental abuse and apathy, community poverty and passion, plus knights, castles, cub scouts and hilarious days out to the seaside all become entwined into yet another hectic school year. Kathy needs faith and hope to get through and perhaps with the help of the loving church community she can. Add to that a boy obsessed by Beethoven, a girl who finds hope through a love of flowers and the confusion of several children from the estate all sharing one father exquisitely wrapped up in two poignant love stories, one delightfully her own, and the heart-warming tale of Kathy’s life turns prejudices and assumptions upside down and tells just how it is in the chaotic neighbourhood surrounding an inner-city primary school. ''We are great admirers of Joyce Worsfold's writing. This book is filled with love, and we know that it will be enjoyed by many, many people.' Adrian and Bridget Plass 'If you enjoy a warm-hearted, life-affirming and penetrating read then 'A Fistful of Marigolds' is for you. Written in a lively, accessible and entertaining style, the story captures the joys, misfortunes, the pleasures and the heartbreaks of an inspirational teacher who clearly loved her work with children.' Unbeknown to Jack he escaped having a bullet in his head but was instead thrown from a van into a ditch on a busy road near Canterbury in Kent after having 'his identity' ripped from his ear with a pair of pliers. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy. Against such possibilities, managing the survival of the Colonial Union won't be easy, either. Download or read book A Fistful of Salt written by Vidya Subramaniam and published by StoryMirror Infotech Pvt Ltd. This book was released on with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The participation of the South, especially Tamilnadu, in the Freedom Movement and allied protests under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi has not been much documented. The 'Salt satyagraha' shook the conscience of the British rulers that it led to the Round Table Conference in the capital of the British Empire. The fact that Tamilnadu played a significant role in this unique kind of protest led by Rajaji has now been brought out in the form of a fictionalized narrative by the eminent writer Vidya Subramaniam. Although ''idealism' as against 'realism' has now become unfashionable in the field of letters, I hold the author in great respect for her daring to portray her characters in conformity with her own convictions. The 'period aspect' of the novel has come off beautifully in the atmospheric description and dialogues between the characters. This novel is a befitting tribute to those who participated in the freedom struggle.
