Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fiske and Fisk Family: Being the Record of the Descendants of Symond Fiske, Lord of the Manor of Stadhaugh, Suffolk County, England, From the Time of Henry IV. To Date, Including All the American Members of the Family A number of abbreviations will be found in the book of which the following are explanations: ae., aged; abt., about; dau., daughter; dec'd, deceased; res., resides or resided, residence; w., wife; wid., widow and widower; yr., year; n. F. K., nothing further known; 5. P., sine prole (without issue). There are a number of other abbreviations of such common use that their meaning will be readily under stood. A name in parenthesis thus: Anna Fisk, dau. Of Robert and Sybil (gould) Fiske, indicates the maiden name of the mother. An interrogation point implies doubt or want of absolute certainty. Birthplaces of the children are not always given, but can be ascertained by reference to the residence of the parents which is always given. I wish to return thanks to all those who so generously furnished the requested information. If all had responded a number of the lines would be more complete. Thanks are especially due, Mrs. Silas A. Pierce, Grafton, Mass; Miss Lou M. Pierce, Worcester, Mass; F. L. Ora Of Chicago, Prof. John Fiske, Cambridge, Mass; Col. Francis S. Fiske of Boston; Hon. Joseph Fiske Of Wellesley Farms, Mass; Rev. A. A. Fiske and others who rendered valuable aid and assistance. It is the sincere wish of the writer that the descendants of the Fiskes will take as much pleasure in perusing these pages as I did in compiling them.
