Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 the Green River was poisoned and its native fishes killed so that the new Flaming Gorge Reservoir could be stocked with non-native game fishes for sportsmen. This incident was representative of water management in the West, where dams and other projects have been built to serve human needs without consideration for the effects of water diversion or depletion on the ecosystem. Indeed, it took a Supreme Court decision in 1976 to save Devils Hole pupfish from habitat destruction at the hands of developers. Nearly a third of the native fish fauna of North America lives in the arid West; this book traces their decline toward extinction as a result of human interference and the threat to their genetic diversity posed by decreases in their populations. What can be done to slow or end this tragedy? As the most comprehensive treatment ever attempted on the subject, Battle Against Extinction shows how conservation efforts have been or can be used to reverse these trends. In covering fishes in arid lands west of the Mississippi Valley, the contributors provide a species-by-species appraisal of their status and potential for recovery, bringing together in one volume nearly all of the scattered literature on western fishes to produce a monumental work in conservation biology. They also ponder ethical considerations related to the issue, ask why conservation efforts have not proceeded at a proper pace, and suggest how native fish protection relates to other aspects of biodiversity planetwide. Their insights will allow scientific and public agencies to evaluate future management of these animal populations and will offer additional guidance for those active in water rights and conservation biology. First published in 1991, Battle Against Extinction is now back in print and available as an open-access e-book thanks to the Desert Fishes Council.

Book Ecology and Conservation of Fishes

Download or read book Ecology and Conservation of Fishes written by Harold M. Tyus and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a stand-alone textbook for students and a useful reference for professionals in government and private agencies, academic institutions, and consultants, Ecology and Conservation of Fishes provides broad, comprehensive, and systematic coverage of all aquatic systems from the mountains to the oceans. The book begins with overview discussions on the ecology, evolution, and diversity of fishes. It moves on to address freshwater, estuarine, and marine ecosystems and identifies factors that affect the distribution and abundance of fishes. It then examines the adaptations of fishes as a response to constraints posed in ecosystems. The book concludes with four chapters on applied ecology to discuss the critical issues of management, conservation, biodiversity crises, and climate change. Major marine fisheries have collapsed, and there are worldwide declines in freshwater fish populations. Fishery scientists and managers must become more effective at understanding and dealing with resource issues. If not, fish species, communities, and entire ecosystems will continue to decline as habitats change and species are lost. Ecology and Conservation of Fishes has taken a historical and functional approach to explain how we got where we are, providing old and new with a better foundation as ecologists and conservationists, and most importantly, it awakens senses of purpose and need. Past management practices are reviewed, present programs considered, and the need for incorporating principles of applied ecology in future practices is emphasized.

Book Water Quality Fisheries and Aquatic Biodiversity Under Two Alternative Forest Management Scenarios for the West side Federal Lands of Washington Oregon and Northern California

Download or read book Water Quality Fisheries and Aquatic Biodiversity Under Two Alternative Forest Management Scenarios for the West side Federal Lands of Washington Oregon and Northern California written by Christopher A. Frissell and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisions in the next few years will determine the long-term future of forests and forest-dependent ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest. The widespread incidence of declining and depressed fish populations across the region, including coastal areas where dams are not present and logging is the primary land use activity, indicates that aquatic ecosystems are highly stressed. Based on a review of recent scientific literature and forest planning documents, continuation of the present and Forest-Service-proposed policies will likely accelerate a crisis of extinction and loss of biotic diversity, triggering large-scale Endangered Species Act listings of fishes and other aquatic organisms

Book Freshwater Ecosystems in Protected Areas

Download or read book Freshwater Ecosystems in Protected Areas written by C. Max Finlayson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater ecosystems have the greatest species diversity per unit area and many endangered species. This book shows that, rather than being a marginal part of terrestrial protected area management, freshwater conservation is central to sustaining biodiversity. It focuses on better practices for conserving inland aquatic ecosystems in protected areas, including rivers, wetlands, peatlands, other freshwater and brackish ecosystems, and estuaries. The authors define inland aquatic ecosystems, showing just how diverse and widespread they are. They examine the principles and processes that are essential for the conservation of freshwater ecosystems and aquatic species. Major categories of threats to freshwater ecosystems and the flow-on implications for protected area design are described. Practical case studies are used to illustrate principles and practices applied around the world. Specific management needs of the main types of freshwater ecosystems are considered, as well as the management of freshwaters in the broader landscape, showing how natural resource governance processes can be harnessed to better manage freshwater biodiversity. The book offers commentary on how to adapt freshwater conservation practices to climate change and ends with an insightful synthesis.

Book The Southeastern Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation Strategy

Download or read book The Southeastern Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation Strategy written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southeastern United States is a global hotspot of freshwater biodiversity, supporting almost two-thirds of the countrys fish species, over 90% of the US total species of mussels and nearly half of the global total for crayfish species. More than a quarter of this regions species are found nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, this region is also a hotspot for imperilment. The number of imperiled freshwater fish species in the Southeast has risen 125% in the past 20 years, in part because recent intensive human development of this region is coupled with a low priority for conservation. Scientific research has extensively documented the causes of species imperilment, yet efforts to reverse these trends have been hampered by limited funding and lack of public awareness. Relative to other areas of the United States, the Southeast has little land in national parks or other forms of protected areas and receives a disproportionately small percentage of federal expenditures for endangered species protection; in the case of listed fishes in budget years 2012-2014, Southeastern endemics received approximately 1%, per species, of the amount spent on fishes found elsewhere in the country. This report summarizes an effort to prioritize watersheds within this region to support future conservation investments.

Book Variation in Planning Unit Size and Patterns of Fish Diversity

Download or read book Variation in Planning Unit Size and Patterns of Fish Diversity written by Chiu-Yen Kuo and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors evaluated the effects of planning-unit size on emergent patterns of species-richness hotspots across the Gulf of Maine-Georges Bank Large Marine Ecosystem. The authors used data on the distribution of fishes as information for this taxon is the most geographically and temporally comprehensive due to their economic value and requirements for active and ongoing management. They also investigated both how spatial scale affects geographic patterns of species richness as well as the effect of sample size per planning unit on such patterns. An effort-standardization approach based on a bootstrap procedure was used to address variation in sample effort across the geographic region. In order to understand the equivalence of hotspots in terms of conservation value, the authors also investigated patterns of species similarity among hotspots across the gradient of planning-unit size.
