Book Special Issue Age and Growth of Chondrichthyan Fishes New Methods Techniques and Analysis

Download or read book Special Issue Age and Growth of Chondrichthyan Fishes New Methods Techniques and Analysis written by John K. Carlson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a collection of papers on the quantitative assessment of age and growth in Chondrichthyan fishes. It details new hard parts for assessments of age, such as caudal thorns; new techniques like bomb radiocarbon for validation; and reexaminations of previous age and growth models. It also examines the importance of assessing the precision and accuracy of statistical formulas, analyses, and models used in age and growth studies.

Book Handbook on fish age determination a Mediterranean experience

Download or read book Handbook on fish age determination a Mediterranean experience written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides guidance on methods for use in fish ageing studies. Fish age, among other biological parameters, is one of the most relevant pieces of data to attain sustainable exploitation levels of fishery resources. Indeed, most analytical methods used in stock assessment require knowledge of demographic structure according to age of stocks, as well as to recruitment, growth, maturity, natural mortality, etc., which are strictly linked to information on age and age structure. The handbook was put together to deal with identified gaps – which affect both the precision and the accuracy of estimations – regarding ageing schemes, criteria and methodologies used in preparing calcified structures. It focuses on the general principles that underpin age analysis (assignment of birth date, preparation methods, aging scheme reading and identification of true and false rings). Crucially, it aims to contribute to the establishment of common analysis methods, which can enable better calibration across the diverse institutes involved, thereby improving the quality and reliability of results.

Book Age Growth and Maturity of Thirteen Species of Fish from Lake Oahe During the Early Years of Impoundment 1963 68

Download or read book Age Growth and Maturity of Thirteen Species of Fish from Lake Oahe During the Early Years of Impoundment 1963 68 written by William Roland Nelson and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The body-scale relation, calculated length, length-weight relation, age at maturity, and sex ratio of 13 major species collected at Lake Oahe from 1963 to 1968 with trap nets and bottom trawls are described. Eight species grew at a faster rate than has been recorded in other Missouri River reservoirs: goldeye, bigmouth buffalo, smallmouth buffalo, white bass, black crappie, white crappie, walleye, and freshwater drum. Four species grew at rates similar to those recorded from other Missouri River reserviors: carp, yellow perch, northern pike, and sauger. One species -- river carpsucker -- grew slower than in other waters. Growth generally was excellent for all major species in the early years of impoundment (1959-62) but then declined. Although inundation of new lands was associated with rapid growth of fishes in the early years of impoundment, water level fluctuations during the growing season had no discernable effect on growth rate. Increased average reservoir depth, which decreased the amount of littoral area, was associated with decreased fish growth.

Book Age Determination Manual of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center Age and Growth Program

Download or read book Age Determination Manual of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center Age and Growth Program written by Mary Elizabeth Matta and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age and Growth Program at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center is tasked with providing age data in order to improve the basic understanding of the ecology and fisheries dynamics of Alaskan fish species. The primary focus of the Age and Growth Program is to estimate ages from otoliths and other calcified structures for age-structured modeling of commercially exploited stocks; however, the program has recently expanded its interests to include numerous studies on topics ranging from age estimate validation to the growth and life-history of non-target species. Because so many applications rely upon age data and particularly upon assurances as to their accuracy and precision, the Age and Growth Program has developed this practical guide to document the age determination of key groundfish species from Alaskan waters. The main objective of this manual is to describe techniques specific to the age determination of commercially and ecologically important species studied by the Age and Growth Program. The manual also provides general background information on otolith morphology, dissection, and preparation, as well as descriptions of methods used to measure precision and accuracy of age estimates. This manual is intended not only as a reference for age readers at the AFSC and other laboratories, but also to give insight into the quality of age estimates to scientists who routinely use such data.
