But we'll take no care, when the weather proves fair, Nor will we vex now tho' it rain; We'll banish all sorrow, and sing till to-morrow, And Angle, and Angle again. Book The Master Fisherman Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Master Fisherman Classic Reprint written by Ernest Earle Osgood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Master Fisherman The bond between religion and poetry is immemorial. Hardly had language been invented, anthropology tells us, before it was put to rhythmic uses; and these earliest rhythms were not only employed in, but directly born of, the celebrations and festivals of worship. When we first catch sight of man, dimly emerging from the prehistoric mist, the adorational song is firmly established among his scanty possessions. To our modern sense, indeed, those primitive dithyrambs might suggest little of either religion or poetry; yet they were both, and they stand to prove, as I should suppose, an intuitive recognition of a relation between the two forms of ideal beauty - a relation so close in some directions as to become, in truth, a partial identity. However, lest that stretches a doubtful "little learning" too far, we may at least view this ancient bond as the inescapable tie between matter and manner, the instinctive fulfillment of meaning in form. Book Songs for Fishermen Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs for Fishermen Classic Reprint written by Joseph Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs for Fishermen To the curious, the romantic, and the devout, the fish has yet another interest - it was formerly used as a symbol of Christ. This use was due to the accident that the initials of the Greek names and titles of Jesus (jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior spell ichthys, the Greek word for fish. When we come to the literature of fishing, we think unavoidably of Walton. His book, perchance in an expensively illustrated edition, lies on every true fish erman's table. It is - after the lapse of nearly three centuries - still an authority on the general princi ples, and even on many of the details, of fishing. Bet ter still, it catches and reflects the cool, serene life and spirit of the angler as no other book does or perhaps ever shall. What shrewd distinctions are drawn by old Izaak: Fishing is an art, or, at least, it is an art to catch fish. What love of nature's delights does he show: Turn out of the way a little, good scholar, towards yonder high honeysuckle hedge; there we'll sit and sing, whilst this shower falls so gently upon the teeming earth, and gives yet a sweeter smell to the lovely flowers that adorn these verdant meadows. What honest emulation he feels: I envy nobody but him, and him only, that catches more fish than I do. What enjoyment he finds in his simple recreation: There be many that have forty times our estates, that would give the greatest part of it to be healthful and cheerful like us; who, with the expense of a little money, have eat and drank, and laughed, and angled, and sung, and slept securely; and rose next day and cast away care, and sung, and laughed, and angled again What humble contentment informs his daily life: We may say of angling, as Dr. Boteler said of strawberries, 'doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did'; and so, if I might be judge, God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling. The Cavaliers of seventeenth century England have often been traduced; but judgment must many a time have been softened because this loved and lovable brother of the angle was of the Cavalier party. Walton was very long of life, as all good anglers should be, and his spirit yet lingers among us. He is not simply a man; he is an institution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rich Fisherman, and Other Tales Sheer rock save this small nook alone But here in heaps the men are thrown Though every spark of life is gone. Brains ooze through bloody tangled locks As dashed by surge against the rocks, Slight was the storm, but yet suppose The most did thus their voyage close Strange, I repeat, that not a man Alive should land in Osterhaun. Soldiers by garb these strangers are, Most likely Swedish, from the war Which lasts so long beyond the sea And pays the fighters royally. Some gold or silver sure they bore Secured around them, to the shore, But naught of that, well knowest thou Is on a single body now. Well, Olaf, what hast thou in view? What leads this lengthy preface to Red Einar, this, - that Sigurd knows More of this business than he shows. No sluggard he when tempests rave And plunder loads the midnight wave, And small the chance of wreckage thrown 50 near his house to him unknown. When we aroused him, by the bed I marked his boots were splashed with red, His sealing club - Ha did I hear A human voice in tones of fear? Book Camp Fire Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Camp Fire Verse Classic Reprint written by Williams Haynes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp-Fire Verse UP to about twenty or twenty-five years ago the man interested in out-of-door sports and pastimes was looked upon with gentle tolerance by his more industrious brethren. The fisherman was a loafer or a gentle ne'er-do-well; the shooter was a good sort, but not likely to get on; golf was tolerated, but only as a Sunday expedient. The man who would venture to shorten his business hours for the sake of playing such a game would have been looked upon with such commercial disgust by his fellow-business men that his failure would have been pretty well assured. A good number of men went carnping every year, but they did not say very much about it.' They were not especially ashamed of it, but neither did they consider the fact worthy of adver tisement The amateurs knew very little of the methods of proper camping. In the light of modern specialization the few books written on the subject seem very crude and inefiicient - always excepting old N essmuk.
