Book excerpt: This book offers an ethnographically informed critique of the hyper-politicised debate on the facilitation of irregularised migration for people seeking asylum between Indonesia and Australia. While state authorities decry such facilitation as “people smuggling” and push for its criminalisation, the book’s focal points are the need for unsanctioned passages for people seeking asylum and the detrimental consequences of the criminalisation of “people smuggling” for both the facilitators and the people seeking asylum. Drawing on court verdicts and interviews with convicted facilitators and law enforcement officials in Indonesia, this book provides a unique and holistic picture of the causes, conditions, procedures and intricacies surrounding the facilitation of irregularised maritime journeys between Indonesia and Australia covering almost four decades. It scrutinises the micro-level operational and place-specific characteristics of people smuggling and the consequences of anti-people-smuggling policies in Indonesia and relates those consequences to changes in the macroenvironment, which include relevant legal, political, social and economic factors that determine the overarching conditions of irregularised mobility. Compared to other states in the Global North, Australia has claimed to be more “successful” with its comprehensive approach to eliminate unsanctioned migration at sea by combining punitive, communicative–reventive and interceptive measures. This book challenges key achievements and objectives in regard to criminalising the facilitation of irregularised migration by foregrounding the many negative side effects that have emanated from “stopping the boats”. The book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of anthropology and sociology, law and criminology, Asia-Pacific Studies, Southeast Asian Studies and international migration.

Book excerpt: Almost 20 years ago Michael Brocken created from his doctoral research, what became both a seminal and contested volume concerning the social mores surrounding the British Folk Revival up to that point in time: The British Folk Revival 1944–2002. In this long-overdue second edition he revisits not only his own research, but also that of others from the 1990s and early 21st century. He then considers how a discourse of folkloric authenticity emerged in the closing years of the 19th century and how a worrying nationalistic immanence came to surround folk music and dance during the inter-war years. Brocken also proposes that the media: records, radio and TV in post-WWII folk revivalism can offer us important insights into how self-directed learning of the folk guitar emerged. Brocken moves on to consider the business structures of the contemporary folk scene and how relationships are formed between contemporary folk business and the digital and social media spheres. In his penultimate chapter he discusses the masculinisation of folk traditions and asks important questions about how our folk traditions are carried and are authorised. In the final chapter he also considers the rise of an exciting new folk live music built environment.

Meanwhile just some few days to the beginning of the marriage rites a ship arrived the shores of Onitsha a commercial village and blocked river ways, the ship bombarded Onitsha and the Royal Niger Company sent soldiers to the hinterlands, Nkem being a warrior joined forces with the Ekwumekmu warriors to protect his mother land from been taken over by the white men. While the war was on, Ojomu’s conversion to Christianity brought about a turnoil in the entire Igalla land, this led to his wife and children’s eyes been gorged out and he beheaded. After the war with the white men, when Nkem returned to his betrothed, things had taken a new turn.

Paramhansa Yogananda—the great spiritual teacher and author of the classic, Autobiography of a Yogi—described spiritual magnetism as the “power of all powers,” and often counseled people, even those seeking material success, to concentrate first on developing spiritual magnetism. He said: “Develop power to attract the highest thing, then you can easily attract all lesser things.” When we have strong spiritual magnetism, we are able to attract whatever else we need: inspiration, money, the right job, a good living situation, or a compatible life partner. Naidhruva Rush graduated from Harvard Law School in 1964, and then worked in the Civil Rights Movement as a staff attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She later served as Director of Community Law Offices in New York City. While working as a law professor in the mid-1970s, Naidhruva read Paramansa Yogananda’s classic "Autobiography of a Yogi", and a year later, moved to Ananda Village with her eight-year-old son. Since then, Naidhruva has served as a minister and teacher at Ananda, offering courses on meditation and spiritual living. She currently serves as editor of "The Essence of Clarity" (formerly Clarity magazine) and previously edited "In Divine Friendship" and "Swami Kriyananda: A Life in God". Naidhruva is also the author of "The Ananda Cookbook".
