Book Fisheries Subsidies Overfishing and Trade

Download or read book Fisheries Subsidies Overfishing and Trade written by United Nations Environment Programme Staff and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsidies and the environment have been a major issue in international trade negotiations for decades. Subsidies to fisheries production may be the most environmentally destructive natural resource subsidies of all. Fisheries subsidies have been a significant factor in the global fisheries crisis of the past two decades. This study provides an analytical framework for international consideration of the issue of fisheries subsidies, trade and the environment. It considers natural resource subsidies in economic theory and examines the mechanisms by which natural resource subsidies contribute to environmental degradation. The study shows how fisheries subsidies affect fish stock. It offers three case studies of fisheries subsidies and their impact in terms of the over exploitation of fish stocks. It is stated that fishing subsidies issue should not be treated narrowly as a trade issue, because it is pre-eminently an environmental issue, and only secondly a trade issue.

Book Subsidies in World Fisheries

Download or read book Subsidies in World Fisheries written by Matteo Milazzo and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past six years, the world's fishery sector has reached a turning point with global fish production reaching a plateau of approximately 100 million tons annually. While aquaculture output continued to grow, yields from capture fisheries were uneven and showed increasing signs of stagnation because of widespread overfishing and overcapitalization, ineffective management, deteriorating resource health, declining or flat global harvests, and inefficient economic and trade policies. This paper examines the role of subsidies in fisheries.

Download or read book All the Boats on the Ocean written by Carmel Finley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical account of overfishing “sees the future of fisheries hinging on holistic approaches involving fish, fisher and environment” (Nature). Most current fishing practices are neither economically nor biologically sustainable. Every year, the world spends $80 billion buying fish that cost $105 billion to catch, even as heavy fishing places growing pressure on stocks that are already struggling with warmer, more acidic oceans. How have we developed an industry that is so wasteful? Carmel Finley explores how government subsidies propelled the expansion of fishing from a coastal, in-shore activity into a global industry. Looking across politics, economics, and biology, All the Boats on the Ocean casts a wide net to reveal how the subsidy-driven expansion of fisheries in the Pacific during the Cold War led to the growth of fisheries science and the creation of international fisheries management. In a world where this technologically advanced industry has enabled nations to colonize the oceans, fish literally have no place left to hide, and the future of the seas and their fish stocks is uncertain. “Finley is an engaging writer, weaving together historical, economic, and societal threads in a narrative that anchors global developments in the accounts of local actors.” —Science “The most comprehensive and empirically grounded account yet of how the modern transnational fishery regime emerged.” —Oregon Historical Quarterly “Finley links the fisheries story to the ‘great transformation’ of global ecology in the postwar period by way of the technology, policy, and politics of food production . . . a significant, original book.” —Arthur McEvoy, Southwestern Law School, author of The Fisherman’s Problem: Ecology and Law in the California Fisheries, 1850-1980

Book Fisheries Subsidies under International Law

Download or read book Fisheries Subsidies under International Law written by Chen-Ju Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsidies to fisheries have been in existence for centuries. However, these remained outside the spotlight of the international community until the turn of this century when the negative effects that fisheries subsidies have on international trade, the environment and sustainable development became increasingly clear. As a result the Doha Round Negotiations set the parameters for an effective fisheries subsidies regime. WTO Members thus embarked in intensive negotiations with the collaboration of various international organizations. These negotiations culminated with publication of the legal text of the Chairman of the Negotiating Group on Rules in 2007 which reflects to a large extent the mandates of the Ministerial Conferences and reconciles the diverse interests of the negotiators. The EU as a major WTO Member and with its own Common Fisheries Policy which has been in effect for a number of years can serve as the basis for comparison and improvement of the proposed regulations.

Book Introducing Fisheries Subsidies

Download or read book Introducing Fisheries Subsidies written by William E. Schrank and published by Fao. This book was released on 2003 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing fisheries subsidies explains why fishery subsidies are of concern, discusses alternatives to subsidies, explains why they are implemented and briefly considers the difficulties caused by their existence. The discussion then sharpens the focus to analyse a number of relevant topics. The final chapter considers current discussions on how the international community might be able to impose sufficient discipline to bring the subsidies that stimulate overfishing under control. There follows a more technical discussion of the linkage between fishery subsidies and their effects on sustainability and trade.

Book The Sunken Billions Revisited

Download or read book The Sunken Billions Revisited written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report updates previous studies that measured in economic terms the extent of biological losses attributable to overfishing globally. The new estimates assess these 'sunken billions' at $83 billion annually. The report further shows that a clear path can lead to the recovery of these considerable losses, including through significant reduction in global fishing overcapacity. A breakdown between regions is also included, showing that the effort needed to achieve this reform will not be felt equally throughout the world. While the cost of such reform will likely be high, the expected benefits include an increase in biomass by a factor of 2.7, increase in annual harvests by 13 percent, and a 30-fold increase in annual net benefits accrued to the fisheries sector (from $3 billion to $86 billion annually). This urgent call for action is reinforced by the impacts of climate change on fish stocks and fisheries worldwide.
