Book Marine Fishery Resources of the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Marine Fishery Resources of the Pacific Islands written by R. D. Gillett and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2010 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This type of fishing can be divided into three categories: (1) small-scale commercial fishing (also referred to as "artisanal"), which can be further broadly subdivided into those operations supplying domestic markets and those operations producing export commodities; (2) subsistence fisheries, which support rural economies and are extremely important to the region's nutrition and food security; and (3) the industrial-scale shrimp fisheries, which in the region only occur in Papua New Guinea. The region's fishery resources can be broadly split into two main categories: oceanic (offshore) and coastal (inshore). Oceanic or offshore resources include tunas, billfish and allied species. They are characterized by an open-water pelagic habitat and potentially extensive individual movements. Coastal or inshore resources include a wide range of finfish and invertebrates.

Book Fisheries in the Economies of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories

Download or read book Fisheries in the Economies of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories written by Robert Gillett and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fishing industry benefits the people and economies of the Pacific in various ways but the full value of these benefits is not reflected in the region's statistics. Records may be maintained but they are not complete, or accurate, or comparable. The research summarized in this report reaffirms the importance of this sector to the economies and societies of the Pacific island countries. The research reveals that the full value of fisheries is likely to have eluded statisticians, and therefore fisheries authorities, government decision makers, and donors. But its value has never escaped the fisher, fish trader, and fish processor. The difference in appreciation between public and private individuals must raise the question of whether fisheries are receiving adequate attention from the public sector---including the necessary management and protection, appropriate research, development, extension and training, and sufficient investment.

What are the major socioeconomic characteristics of the community? 2. How much does the community depend on marine resources for consumption, income, and livelihood? 3. How much is fished by whom? 4. What is harvested and where is the catch taken from? 5. What does the community do with the catch? 6. What is the total catch worth at local market prices? 7. What are the fishing strategies 1 used? 8. What gender issues apply? 9. How does the community keep the fish (preservation and stocks)? 10. What knowledge is there of fisheries management rules (traditional and governmental)?

Knowledge of the biology of these species is reviewed in detail, as are resource assessment methods. An example of the possible use of remote sensing for estimating potential is given. Harvesting and processing techniques and commodity grading are also discussed, while a chapter focussing on the principal markets for bêche-de-mer, Hong Kong and Singapore concludes that an increase in exports from the countries and territories of the South Pacific is possible if they can supply a consistently good-quality product on a regular basis.
