The causes of decay and the mode of restoring the Fur-trade between China and British North America, displayed in one of our leading articles, appears to have given very general satisfaction; and the two American Boundary questions have been explained, historically and politically, unmixed with even the least tincture of faction or partisanship, or domestic antagonist feeling. Although the submission of China must inevitably'open a market for our woollen and hardware manufactures, it is difficult to say what may be either its least or greatest limit; distance also will confine that trade to capitalists or extensive manufacturers, so that no very immediate or very sensible relief to our stagnant or retrograding labour-market will be experienced thence. A Treaty of Commerce and Navigation has been concluded with Russia, but its provisions offer little encouragement, and make a trifling increment to the advantages which we previously enjoyed in our trade with that colossal empire. Tins is the more to be regretted, because Russia, having raw material to exchange for manufactured goods, English labour would find admission by that barter into a foreign market. Whereas, in a trade with China, or where finished are exchanged for finished goods only, no great absolute benefit results to either country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fisher's Colonial Magazine and Commercial Maritime Journal, Vol. 4: September-December, 1843 Having buffeted the waves and outlived the storms of colonial distress, we spread all our canvass for a new voyage of discovery: and with the zealous co-operation of our spirited publishers, we have no apprehension of missing the haven to which the honourable ambition of doing good in our vocation, like the unerring polar star, directs our prow. Many connected with our colonies are aware, that since the granting of systems of self-government to several of our possessions, politics have become an object, nay a profession, with some of the most talented of our colonists; this consequence, easily foreseen, has had a most injurious influence upon the colonial press, from which much valuable information has hitherto been always gleaned. There is now little more to be found in the columns of the most leading of our colonist journals, than parliamentary debates, accounts of approaching and contested elections, and in some instances biographical sketches of candidates, whose regenerated lives were their only recommendation to the confidence of one country to which the offended laws of another had limited their future labours. This regretted change, in the character of our very best and most valuable colonial papers, we have endeavoured to provide against, by the arrangement already alluded to - an arrangement calculated to insure the most authentic reports of trade, commerce, and banking, in each of our numerous dependencies. Yet, the role of Liverpool within the British imperial system and the impact on the city of its colonial connections remain underplayed in recent writing on both Liverpool and the empire. However, ‘inconvenient’ this may prove, this specially-commissioned collection of essays demonstrates that the imperial dimension deserves more prevalence in both academic and popular representations of Liverpool’s past. Indeed, if Liverpool does represent the ‘World in One City’ – the slogan for Liverpool’s status as European Capital of Culture in 2008 – it could be argued that this is largely down to Merseyside’s long-term interactions with the colonial world, and the legacies of that imperial history. In the context of Capital of Culture year and growing interest in the relationship between British provincial cities and the British empire, this book will find a wide audience amongst academics, students and history enthusiasts generally.
