Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fish Culture: In Ponds and Other Inland Waters River, stream or lake water, which during the spawning season will not fall below 55 degrees, preferably below 60 degrees, and only becomes muddy after exceptionally heavy storms, and then for a short time only, is necessary. Dur ing the breeding season, higher temperatures than those named, and water perpetually clean, are very much to be desired. At 50 degrees the fish will not spawn; and at 45 degrees both eggs and fry will die. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Review of the state of the world fishery resources Inland fisheries

Download or read book Review of the state of the world fishery resources Inland fisheries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAO Fishery and Aquaculture Circular C942 Revision 3 (C942 Rev. 3) updates and expands the scope of previous revisions of the circular. C942 Rev. 3 is an important baseline document, intended to assist in the global understanding of inland fisheries and inform dialogue on their current and future role. The third revision reviews the status and trends of inland fisheries catch at global, continental and subcontinental levels. It places inland capture fisheries in the context of overall global fish production, and calls attention to the importance of inland capture fisheries with respect to food security and nutrition and the Sustainable Development Goals. It quantifies global inland fisheries resources in terms of food production, nutrition, employment, economic contribution with respect to those countries/regions or subnational areas where they are important. A characterization approach to distinguish large-scale and small-scale fishing operations and their relative contributions is provided. The review provides estimated economic values of inland fisheries, as well as a valuation of potential replacement cost of these (in terms of dollars, other resources such as land and water, feeds). There is also an analysis of the extent and economic value of recreational inland fisheries. The contribution to employment and the gender differences related to this are quantified. The linkages between inland fisheries and biodiversity are also explored. C942 Rev. 3 discusses ways to measure and assess inland fisheries, in particular, how to establish more accurately inland fishery catches in the many situations where there are challenges to collection of catch statistics.

Book Survey and evaluation of water qualities

Download or read book Survey and evaluation of water qualities written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This field guide provides practical information on the field monitoring of the physical, chemical and biological properties of inland waters exploited by fisheries and aquaculture. After introducing the concept and topics, it discusses the qualities of inland waters in detail. Water properties are grouped by chapter, based on abiotic or biotic factor, or indeed both. Chapters and sections are supported by illustrations and practical explanations of how to discover, understand and solve water-quality-related problems. The practical guides presented at the end of each chapter discuss the different water properties important for fisheries and pond fish culture. As climate change is a problem of increasing importance, an additional chapter on climate and climate change implications, together with the application of meteorology to inland fisheries and aquaculture, is also included. The annexes provide a guide to identifying water types and the main organisms which live in them. Annex 4 systematically presents equipment, kits and instruments which could be used to check the physical, chemical and biological properties of inland waters used for fisheries and aquaculture. This richly illustrated guide also includes a glossary where simple and clear definitions and explanations, together with substantial science-based background information, can be found. Terms included in the glossary are asterisked and italicized.

Book Inland Fishery Enhancements

Download or read book Inland Fishery Enhancements written by T. Petr and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major objective of the book was to promote better understanding of how various factors must fit together for successful implementation of inland fisheries enhancement programmes. Accordingly, the papers span a broad range of topics: technical, socio-economic, cultural and administrative. Techniques, geographic constraints, problems of information gathering and monitoring, and genetics are addressed. Because of its relative importance as an enhancement technique, stocking received much attention; areas discussed include strategies, modelling and prediction of results, health management and fitness of stocked fish as well as stocking experiences by type of water body. Cage culture: its importance, promotion through extension and limitations is also considered. Other paper cover social and economic benefits and their distribution, institutions and self and participatory management. Country reviews dealing very broadly with enhancements are also included.
