Book excerpt: Now in its 23rd year, the Tax Book is the authoritative commentary on the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997. I can’t remember when I have been so impressed before by a book. What is astonishing is the sheer simplicity of the idea behind it. It is so simple as to amount to genius. What the tax book does is to take the Consolidated Taxes Act 1997 and produce what appears to be an identical copy of that Act. Each section and schedule, each subsection and paragraph of the original Act appears. Looking at it you would be convinced you are reading the actual legislation. It is only when you do read it that you realise it couldn’t be the legislation. Because you can actually understand it! What Alan Moore has done is to rewrite the Consolidated Taxes Act 1997, subsection by subsection, in plain English. I don’t believe I have ever seen a book which is laid out to look exactly the same as the original legislation, and which instead of attempting a global birds-eye view of each section tackles each subsection in turn and explains exactly what that subsection is intended to mean. This version of the legislation is so much more readable! I unreservedly recommend this book to every tax practitioner. Freshwater ecosystems cover only 1% of the Earth's surface; however, they are a habitat for about 40% of fish species. At the same time, inland fisheries make less than 12% of the world's global fish catch, with 43% coming from low-income and food-deficient countries (Africa, South America, Southeast Asia). In Europe, the Western Balkans have significant fishing waters and fish resources, including the Middle Danube drainage (Sava, Drina, Velika Morava river systems), large ancient lakes (Skadar/Shkodra, Ohrid, Prespa, Dojran), and the Adriatic basin characterized by endemic and commercially important species. However, in contrast to the high fishing potential in a significant part of the Western Balkans, diverse and specific political, economic, and social factors largely had a negative impact on the state of fish resources. This volume is multidisciplinary and provides a sound knowledge base for scientific and practical fisheries. In addition, it may be a valuable guide for managers and conservationists worldwide to adapt methods and procedures for the ecological sustainability of fish resources under specific local, natural, and socio-economic conditions. Finally, the content is a good reference for natural sciences and agriculture students studying fish, fish resources, and fisheries sciences. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, human exploitation of marine resources has become more efficient as the understanding of the habits and behaviour of the various species available in the sea gradually increased. Thus, technologies have developed naturally over time and fishing gears and practices have become more sophisticated. These technical advances in fishing gear have generally led to more efficient economic fishing operations and better access to resources. However, fishing implies the harvesting of marine organisms directly from their natural environment, therefore general awareness of environmental problems due to the exploitation of fishery resources has also increased. In particular, the poor selectivity of some gears is responsible for the capture of juveniles, immature and undersized specimens of many species, with negative consequences on the state of stocks. In addition, bycatch in marine fisheries is a major source of human-caused mortality of marine megafauna, often leading to the capture of vulnerable species. Finally, many bottom-towed gears are responsible for high impacts on bottom communities and habitats, with cascading consequences on the entire marine ecosystem. All these impacts can lead to changes in the structure, function and integrity of ecosystems, including effects on the food webs and multispecies predator-prey relationships.
