Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In its resolutions 57/141 and 58/240, the General Assembly decided to establish a regular process under the United Nations for global reporting and assessment of the state of the marine environment, including socioeconomic aspects, both current and foreseeable, building on existing regional assessments. In its resolution 71/257, the Assembly recalled that the scope of the first cycle of the Regular Process focused on establishing a baseline and decided that the scope of the second cycle would extend to evaluating trends and identifying gaps. The programme of work for the period 2017-2020 of the second cycle of the Regular Process includes the preparation by the Group of Experts of the Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects, of the second World Ocean Assessment, building on the baselines established by the First Global Integrated Marine Assessment (first World Ocean Assessment). In its resolution 72/73, the Assembly decided that the Group of Experts should proceed on the basis of a single comprehensive assessment. The present document was prepared by the Group of Experts in accordance with those decisions"--Summary.

Book The First Global Integrated Marine Assessment

Download or read book The First Global Integrated Marine Assessment written by United Nations and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Ocean Assessment - or, to give its full title, The First Global Integrated Marine Assessment - is the outcome of the first cycle of the United Nations' Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects. The Assessment provides vital, scientifically-grounded bases for the consideration of ocean issues, including climate change, by governments, intergovernmental agencies, non-governmental agencies and all other stakeholders and policymakers involved in ocean affairs. Together with future assessments and related initiatives, it will support the implementation of the recently adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly its ocean-related goals. Moreover, it will also form an important reference text for marine science courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientist and engineers working in the field renewable energy must overcome the challenges of conversion, transmission and storage before it can replace more traditional power sources such as oil and gas. In this book, Bent Sorenson provides strategies for the efficient conversion, transmission and storage of all forms of renewable energy. The book provides the reader with a complete background on how renewable energy is transformed into power and the best methods for transmitting and storing the energy produced. Specific to this book is a discussion of conversion processes and storage methods for: geothermal energy, biological and liquid fuels, wave energy, and photovoltaic. In addition the book will cover renewable energy conversions for powering small electrics, as well as battery applications for portable power, and energy bands in semiconductors. *Energy conversion methods for all types of renewable energy*Energy conversion and storage for small *Electronics portable power *Battery applications for portable power*Energy bands and semiconductors

Download or read book A World Divided written by G. K. Helleiner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1976-01-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1976 volume originated in the mood of disillusion and despair which followed the Third United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Santiago in 1972. The prospects for cooperation between rich and poor nations seemed poor and new policies and instruments needed to considered if the interests of the rich and poor nations were not to become even more unbalanced in favour of the rich. The contributors to this volume consider what unexploited possibilities might be open to the less developed countries, both jointly and individually, in international affairs, which would generate a more equitable outcome. The issues addressed in these papers were, at the time of publication, of immediate relevance following the success of oil producing countries in revising prices, worldwide inflation, famine in the poorest countries, recession in industrial countries. Simultaneously, the less developed countries were declaring the need for a new international economic order, which this volume discusses.

Book Impact of subsidized food grains on the food security of rural households an economic analysis

Download or read book Impact of subsidized food grains on the food security of rural households an economic analysis written by Nagesh N S and published by Prem Jose. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study was undertaken with an overall objective of assessment of food consumption pattern, calorie and nutrient derivation. In Tumakuru district of Karnataka state, primary data were collected from 120 rural households. The rural households inadequately consumed proteins, milk and milk products. In terms of vegetables, fruits and egg and meat consumption, they were severely inadequate. Among the nutrients intake, the households were inadequate in fats, iron, riboflavin, niacin and carotene intake. The subsidized food items through PDS had greatly helped in attainment of calorie security but had severely lacked in terms of providing balanced diet security. In the presence of food subsidy, share of total expenditure on food was 67.24 per cent among AAY farm households and 59.98 per cent among BPL farm households, which would rise to 75.16 per cent and 65.62 per cent, respectively in the absence of food subsidy. In the presence of food subsidy, proportion of income saved was 30.72 per cent among AAY farm households and 24.19 per cent among BPL farm households, which would decrease to 8.65 per cent and 11.76 per cent, respectively in the absence of food subsidy. In the presence of food subsidy, the vulnerability to food insecurity of AAY farm, AAY non-farm and BPL non-farm households reduced significantly. The optimized food expenditure per consumptive unit per day for major nutrients and all nutrients was Rs. 34.49 and Rs. 36.56 respectively. The food basket of rural households needs to be expanded to ensure nutritional security.

Book Conservation for the Anthropocene Ocean

Download or read book Conservation for the Anthropocene Ocean written by Phillip S. Levin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation for the Anthropocene Ocean: Interdisciplinary Science in Support of Nature and People emphasizes strategies to better connect the practice of marine conservation with the needs and priorities of a growing global human population. It conceptualizes nature and people as part of shared ecosystems, with interdisciplinary methodologies and science-based applications for coupled sustainability. A central challenge facing conservation is the development of practical means for addressing the interconnectedness of ecosystem health and human well-being, advancing the fundamental interdisciplinary science that underlies conservation practice, and implementing this science in decisions to manage, preserve, and restore ocean ecosystems. Though humans have intentionally and unintentionally reshaped their environments for thousands of years, the scale and scope of human influence upon the oceans in the Anthropocene is unprecedented. Ocean science has increased our knowledge of the threats and impacts to ecological integrity, yet the unique scale and scope of changes increases uncertainty about responses of dynamic socio-ecological systems. Thus, to understand and protect the biodiversity of the ocean and ameliorate the negative impacts of ocean change on people, it is critical to understand human beliefs, values, behaviors, and impacts. Conversely, on a human-dominated planet, it is impossible to understand and address human well-being and chart a course for sustainable use of the oceans without understanding the implications of environmental change for human societies that depend on marine ecosystems and resources. This work therefore presents a timely, needed, and interdisciplinary approach to the conservation of our oceans. Helps marine conservation scientists apply principles from oceanography, ecology, anthropology, economics, political science, and other natural and social sciences to manage and preserve marine biodiversity Facilitates understanding of how and why social and environmental processes are coupled in the quest to achieve healthy and sustainable oceans Uses a combination of expository material, practical approaches, and forward-looking theoretical discussions to enhance value for readers as they consider conservation research, management and planning
