Book excerpt: A treasury of twenty-five rhymes and lullabies is for early years practitioners who want engaging songs to introduce Islam and Muslim practices to young children.Included are fun rhymes about the five pillars of Islam (announcing the testimony of faith, maintaining salat, fasting in Ramadan, paying zakat, and performing Hajj), about Allah, spreading peace, doing good deeds, family, mosque, al-Qur'an, and Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him). Also provided are soothing lullabies to teach a sunnah bedtime routine, encourage prayer, and reassure children of the protection of Allah during His gift of restful sleep. The rich vocabulary used in many poems invites children to engage in dialogic reading with adults to discover their meanings (and there is a glossary of Arabic words provided and a brief description of the five pillars of Islam, at the end of the book). There are plenty of long rhymes so that young pre-readers can focus upon a single verse and expand the content they engage with as they develop. Many of the songs use repetition to encourage memorisation. Rhymes such as With Bismillah We're Handy and Wash Yourself naturally incline readers to create their own extra verses. In groups or pairs, children can devise actions for rhymes such as Allah Made Us From Head To Toes, The Muslims Round The World, and Round The Ka'bah, Walk. They can also choreograph playful exercises to accompany Love To Love Allah Most, Five Prayers Each Day, Peace Greetings Must Be Spread, A Narrow Mosque, and Sail Your Seas. The lullabies in the book are well-suited to calming colouring sessions, as well as for transitions into naptimes and bedtimes. All of the rhymes are written to the tune or rhythm of traditional nursery rhymes, for example Excellent Allah follows the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat. (Please be aware that rhymes such as Incy Wincy Spider can be sung in different ways.) Likewise, the six lullabies follow melodies of traditional rhymes and lullabies, for instance Allah's Nigh, Night Time's Nigh can be sung to the tune of Lullaby And Goodnight. Many of the rhymes are collected from published paperbacks: Islamic Nursery Rhymes, Muslim Lullabies, Ramadan Rhymes Colouring Book, Hajj Harmonies Colouring Book, Five Prayers Each Day, and First Rhymes and Lullabies for Muslims - the latter two titles are now out of print. The beautiful and faceless illustrations are by Fatimah De Vaux Davies. The paperback edition of Muslim Rhymes and Lullabies is only available from Amazon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic Nursery Rhymes is an endearing collection of nursery rhymes for young children to learn about the beautiful ways of Islam in a lovely experience of singing with their parents and elders. The rhymes in the book are traditional nursery rhymes reworded with timeless Islamic meaning. For example, 'Oranges and Lemons' is an historical rhyme about ringing the bells of East London churches as a man made his journey to his execution - and the version here, entitled 'Assalam Alaykum', is about mosques in East London spreading salaam (peace) and news of prayer time. The illustrations by Fatimah De Vaux Davies are attractive and highly detailed (yet faceless) to delight children and engage their interest in the actions of practicing Muslims. For example, one illustration depicts Muslims gathering around a large Qur'an that is spilling out light. In another, Muslims are performing ritual prayers upon the earth, while boats sail, and airplanes and rockets fly. These beautiful Islamic nursery rhymes can be used as songful remembrance of Allah as a resource for developing pre-recitation skills before reading the Qur'an.

Book Structuralist Studies in Arabic Linguistics

Download or read book Structuralist Studies in Arabic Linguistics written by Kirk Belnap and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing Charles Ferguson's papers on Arabic linguistics, this volume addresses issues of continuing concern in phonology, syntax, historical linguistics, and sociolinguistics. The introduction provides a biographical sketch, including excerpts from interviews with Ferguson in which he discusses his career and dealings with Arabic. A critical overview precedes each of the four sections (Diachronica, Phonology, Register and Genre, and General). This work fills an important gap in the history of linguistics in documenting much of the career and contributions of a formative figure in American linguistics. In addition to updating Ferguson's articles, the volume preserves Ferguson's reflections on the events, personalities, relationships, and issues at the time he wrote the articles, as well as on subsequent developments. A unique and fascinating picture of a pioneer linguist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia is among the most ethnically diverse and culturally rich nations on earth. Yet much of its cultural wealth lies buried beneath the rubric of its main Malay, Chinese and Indian “race” categories; the dazzling diversity within and outside these groups remains largely unexplored. This book uncovers some of this fascinating diversity through the stories of five little-known acculturated ethnic groups in Peninsula Malaysia. The author, a Malaysian sociologist, delivers an insightful and lucid study of these groups, with some surprising findings. These communities illustrate how much more cross-cultural mingling, sharing and co-dependence there is within Malaysian society than we care to recognize, admit or celebrate. This raises various questions: Is a similar process of spontaneous inter-ethnic interaction possible between larger ethnic groups today? How can we foster such acculturation, and can it by itself contribute to ethnic harmony? The author also discovers that despite their long settlement and deep acculturation, segments of these groups are anxious about their future, and pine for an indigenous identity. What are the implications of this trend for ethnic relations, and how can it be resolved? This book traces the acculturation journey of these communities and draws lessons for ethnic relations in one of the most complex multi-ethnic nations in the world. It will appeal to scholars, students, laymen and visitors interested in migration, history, culture, ethnicity and heritage in Malaysia and the region.
