Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compilation of little-known and never-before-published apocryphal Christian texts in English translation This anthology of ancient nonbiblical Christian literature presents informed introductions to and readable translations of a wide range of little-known apocryphal texts, most of which have never before been translated into any modern language. An introduction to the volume as a whole addresses the most significant features of the writings included and contextualizes them within the contemporary study of the Christian Apocrypha. The body of the book comprises thirty texts that have been carefully introduced, copiously annotated, and translated into English by eminent scholars. With dates of composition ranging from the second century CE to early in the second millennium, these fascinating texts provide a more complete picture of Christian thought and expression than canonical texts alone can offer.

Book Constructions

Download or read book Constructions written by Peter Auer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume embarks on an exploration of the processual and dynamic character of grammatical constructions in emergence, both from an ‘emergent’ and an ‘emerging’ perspective. ‘Emerging’ constructions develop out of their discourse contexts. Talking of emerging constructions is compatible with a view of grammar as a stable system of rules and structures which may ‘emerge’ (i.e., come into existence) out of a pool of previously unordered elements. ‘Emergent’ constructions on the contrary are due to the on-line production of grammar in time. The term ‘emergent’ emphasises the fact that a grammatical structure is always temporary and ephemeral. In both senses, grammar is modelled as a highly adaptive resource for interaction. On the basis of empirical studies on spoken English, German, Hebrew, Swedish and French, the volume addresses the following questions: How can what initially appears to be construction x end up being construction y in on-line syntax? What are the local interactional needs which such processes respond to in the process of their emergence? Does the on-line (re-)modelling of a construction concern its syntactic or semantic side ‐ or both? And finally: Should emergent grammatical structures as they unfold in real time be seen as stages in the emerging of grammar?

Book Coordination Structures in Old and Middle High German

Download or read book Coordination Structures in Old and Middle High German written by Sophia Jana Oppermann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-12-02 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the quantitative analysis of a large corpus of Old and Middle High German prose texts, this volume provides a first extensive overview on the syntactic properties of coordination structures featuring the coordinators inti/und and joh in Old and Middle High German and discusses potential analyses in a generative framework. After introducing the main properties of coordination structures in Modern Standard German in Chapters 1 and 2, the results of the corpus study are presented in Chapters 3-6. Chapter 3 focuses on the coordinators inti/und and joh, showing that coordination structures with both coordinators already exhibit the same characteristic types of ellipsis as well as the same parallelism of the conjuncts as their Modern Standard German counterparts. Chapters 4-6 each discuss one major aspect of diachronic change: verbal agreement with conjoined subject-NPs (Chapter 4), the conditions regarding the omission of referential subject-pronouns in clausal or verbal coordination structures (Chapter 5) and so-called ‘inversion after und’ (Chapter 6). The volume thus provides a deeper understanding of the syntax of coordination structures in both a synchronic and diachronic perspective for researchers and students.

Book The Conversation Frame

Download or read book The Conversation Frame written by Esther Pascual and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together the latest research on fictive interaction, that is the use of the frame of ordinary conversation as a means to structure cognition (talking to oneself), discourse (monologues organized as dialogues), and grammar (“why me? attitude”). This follows prior work on the subject by Esther Pascual and other authors, most of whom are also contributors to this volume. The 17 chapters in the volume explore fictive interaction as a fundamental cognitive phenomenon, as a ubiquitous discourse-structuring device, as a possibly universal linguistic construction, and as an effective communicative strategy in persuasion and language pathology. The data discussed involve a wide variety of unrelated languages (spoken and signed) and modes of communication (oral, written, visual), across cultural contexts and historical time. The research presented combines linguistics and cognitive science, while bridging the gap between core grammatical studies and modern conversation and discourse analysis. The volume further reaches across what may be the most basic divide in linguistics: that between descriptive, theoretical, and applied linguistics.

Book The Middle Dutch Prose Lancelot

Download or read book The Middle Dutch Prose Lancelot written by Orlanda S.H. Lie and published by Uitgeverij Verloren. This book was released on 1987 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise and proliferation of Arthurian prose romances in France in the thirteenth century is attested most notably by the enormous corpus of Old French Arthurian prose romances known as the Vulgate Cycle. According to most scholars, the Vulgate Cycle in its original form comprised three prose romances: the Roman de Lancelot en prose, the Roman de la Queste del Saint Graal and the Roman de la Mort le Roi Artu. At a later stage, two other prose romances conceived as preliminary works to the original trilogy were added to the cycle: the Estoire del Saint Graal and the Vulgate Merlin. This group of Old French Arthurian romances has survived in nearly one hundred manuscripts and was translated into almost all major Western European languages. Of the three extant Middle Dutch translations of the Lancelot en prose, Orlanda Lie has chosen the (only) verse translation (preserved on two leaves of parchment, the so-called Rotterdam Fragments) as the starting point for a comparison between the Middle Dutch, the Middle High German and the Old French Lancelot en prose versions. In this comparative analysis only a small portion of the extensive Lancelot en prose (namely, those sections that are parallel to the content of the Rotterdam Fragments) will be involved. The relation of the consulted French manuscripts to the Dutch and German Lancelot translations are ascertained in the light of insights gained from an investigation into the manuscript tradition of the Lancelot en prose sections which qualify for a comparison with the two Middle Dutch fragments. Although the main emphasis of this study falls on the manuscript tradition of the Lancelot en prose, a brief discussion of some of the important stylistic and structural characteristics of the Lancelot trilogy as a whole is presented, especially since it is more than likely that the scope and complexity of the work has also influenced (directly of indirectly) its manuscript tradition. A diplomatic and a critical edition of the Rotterdam Fragments as well as a translation in modern English are included in this volume.

Book excerpt: The second volume of the two-volume set The Fruits of Empirical Linguistics focuses on the linguistic outcomes of empirical linguistics. The contributions present some of the insights that linguists can gain by applying the new methods: progress within language study is accelerated by the new evidence since language systems are more precisely captured. Readers will enjoy the fresh perspective on linguistic questions made possible by the evidence-based approach.

Book The Fruits of Empirical Linguistics Product

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

Book Dating the Old Norse Poetic Edda

Download or read book Dating the Old Norse Poetic Edda written by Christopher D. Sapp and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers new dating of the poems of the Old Norse Poetic Edda , perhaps our best sources about the mythology and legends of the Viking Age. This study compares the anonymous Eddic poems to dated skaldic poems with respect to five phenomena that develop diachronically in early Old Norse: the expletive particle of, types of negation, word order, types of relative clause, and metrical criteria. After examining these dating features individually, the three most reliable criteria—the particle of, negation, and relative clause type—are combined into a multifactorial analysis using a Naïve Bayes Classifier. The classifier assigns a date to each Eddic poem, and these proposed dates have interesting implications for our understanding of these texts as sources for the medieval history, mythology, linguistics, and literature of the Germanic peoples. This book will have broad interdisciplinary interest, not just to historical linguists and philologists but also to scholars of Norse history, literature, and mythology.

Book Receptive Multilingualism

Download or read book Receptive Multilingualism written by Jan D. ten Thije and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Receptive multilingualism refers to the language constellation in which interlocutors use their respective mother tongue while speaking to each other. Since the mid-nineties receptive multilingualism is promoted by the European commission on par with other possibilities of increasing the mobility of the European citizens. Throughout the last ten years a marked increase in the research on this topic has been observable. This volume reveals new perspectives from different theoretical frameworks on linguistic analyses of receptive multilingualism in Europe. Case studies are presented from contemporary settings, along with analyses of historical examples, theoretical considerations and, finally, descriptions of didactical concepts established in order to transfer and disseminate receptive multilingual competence. The book contains results from research carried out at the Research Center on Multilingualism at the University of Hamburg as well as contributions by various international scholars working in the field of receptive multilingualism.
