This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's business environment, life of consumer products have become shorter and shorter. Rapid advancement of technologies, change in consumer's tastes and preferences, and changes in business models are some of the forces behind shortened product's life. These factors have caused societies to produce huge amount of wastes, contribute towards rapid depletion of resources, and causing serious damage to the environment. Thus, the question as to what will happen to end of use and end of life consumer products is an issue that has both environmental and economic implications. This book addresses the possibilities of first steps of reverse logistics supply chain for circular economy from consumers to businesses and close the loop of textile supply chain in order to recapture values and reduce demand for virgin resources thereby contribute towards minimizing the amount of textile clothing that ends up in landfills every year. Models are developed for estimating total system cost, total CO2 emissions and cost of acquiring a kilogram of textile products in a given set of conditions, considering different collecting methods during the design and implementation of reverse logistics.

Book Sustainable Operations and Closed loop Supply Chains

Download or read book Sustainable Operations and Closed loop Supply Chains written by Gilvan C. Souza and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for any company or organization that needs detailed guidance on the journey towards sustainability, starting from zero. And if your firm wants to be sustainable, you know you have to consider the triple bottom line when making decisions: economic (profit), environmental (planet), and social (people). By focusing on the triple bottom line (3Ps), your firm can be assured of a steady supply of inputs such as raw materials and labor. Author Souza carefully explains the first step towards sustainability, which is aimed at reducing waste in operations, with the help of such tools as lean and Six Sigma. He will also help guide your firm through a?life cycle assessment? (LCA) for each of the main products and processes. LCA is a methodology designed to assess the environmental impact (such as energy consumption, and toxicity) of a product or process through its life cycle: raw material extraction, transportation, manufacturing, packaging and distribution, use by consumers, and end-of-life. The final step in the journey towards sustainability is to close the loop. To close the loop, you?ll learn about designing efficient packaging, designing products for multiple life cycles (as in design for remanufacturing), or designing products according to a Cradle to Cradle? philosophy, which ensures no use of toxic materials, ease of disassembly, and 100% up-cyclability. The book concludes with the "final P" of sustainability- people, with some examples of firms that invest heavily in the social bottom line.

Book Are You Really Closing Your Supply Chain

Download or read book Are You Really Closing Your Supply Chain written by Rabindranath Bhattacharya and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at an important and underserved niche within supply chain management education and application: closed loop supply chain management where the product travels from cradle to cradle and not to grave. Products get a new life or become hybrid (combination of old and new) as it travels down the forward line to customers and back to the starting point through the reverse line from customers and again back to customers through forward line. All supply chain professionals need to understand this for their own survival in today's competitive world. This book is based on the research work carried out by the author for nearly four years in the Department of Management Studies of Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India and is meant to guide the practitioners (especially original equipment suppliers for especially auto parts) towards design of models, analysis of the same, drawing insights from them and ultimately providing superior service to customers. The author hopes to bring out the entire book in three parts and the first part of the series describes what is supply chain or forward supply chain to be precise, its evolution, motivation behind it, design and structure of the same and the way forward. Reverse supply chain and Closed loop supply chain integrating both forward and reverse chains would be taken up in the remaining two parts. This book is unlike any text book on Supply chain and is meant for general public as well as professionals and students who would like to have a general knowledge of the subject without going through complicated theories and problems. The dialogue between colleagues in between hope would help the readers get rid of monotony and a feel of reality.

Download or read book Operations Logistics and Supply Chain Management written by Henk Zijm and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of important trends and developments in logistics and supply chain research, making them available to practitioners, while also serving as a point of reference for academicians. Operations and logistics are cornerstones of modern supply chains that in turn are essential for global business and economics. The composition, character and importance of supply chains and networks are rapidly changing, due to technological innovations such as Information and Communication Technologies, Sensors and Robotics, Internet of Things, and Additive Manufacturing, to name a few (often referred to as Industry 4.0). Societal developments such as environmental consciousness, urbanization or the optimal use of scarce resources are also impacting how supply chain networks are configured and operated. As a result, future supply chains will not just be assessed in terms of cost-effectiveness and speed, but also the need to satisfy agility, resilience and sustainability requirements. To face these challenges, an understanding of the basic as well as more advanced concepts and recent innovations is essential in building competitive and sustainable supply chains and, as part of that, logistics and operations. These span multiple disciplines and geographies, making them interdisciplinary and international. Therefore, this book contains contributions and views from a variety of experts from multiple countries, and combines management, engineering as well as basic information technology and social concepts. In particular, it aims to: provide a comprehensive guide for all relevant and major logistics, operations, and supply chain management topics in teaching and business practice address three levels of expertise, i.e., concepts and principles at a basic (undergraduate, BS) level, more advanced topics at a graduate level (MS), and finally recent (state-of-the-art) developments at a research level. In particular the latter serve to present a window on current and future (potential) logistics innovations in the different thematic fields for both researchers and top business practitioners integrate a textbook approach with matching case studies for effective teaching and learning discuss multiple international perspectives in order to represent adequately the true global nature of operations, logistics and supply chains.
