Book excerpt: The cross section and decay angular distributions for the coherent \phi meson photoproduction on the deuteron have been measured for the first time up to a squared four-momentum transfer t =(p_{\gamma}-p_{\phi})^2 =-2 GeV^2/c^2, using the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The cross sections are compared with predictions from a re-scattering model. In a framework of vector meson dominance, the data are consistent with the total \phi-N cross section \sigma_{\phi N} at about 10 mb. If vector meson dominance is violated, a larger \sigma_{\phi N} is possible by introducing larger t-slope for the \phi N \to \phi N process than that for the \gamma N \to \phi N process. The decay angular distributions of the \phi are consistent with helicity conservation.

Book excerpt: We report on the first measurement of the differential cross section of $\phi$-meson photoproduction for the $d(\gamma, pK^{+}K^{-})n$ exclusive reaction channel. The experiment was performed using a \textcolor{black}{tagged-photon} beam and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. A combined analysis using data from the $d(\gamma, pK^{+}K^{-})n$ channel and those from a previous publication on coherent $\phi$ production on the deuteron has been carried out to extract the $\phi-N$ total cross section, $\sigma_{\phi N}$. The extracted $\phi-N$ total cross section favors a value above 20 mb. This value is larger than the value extracted using vector-meson dominance models for $\phi$ photoproduction on the proton.

Book excerpt: In this report, we measure the differential cross section on $\phi$-meson photoproduction from deuterium near the production threshold for a proton using the CLAS detector and a tagged-photon beam in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was carried out by a triple coincidence detection of a proton, $K^+$ and $K^-$ near the theoretical production threshold of 1.57 GeV. Moreover, the extracted differential cross sections $\frac{d\sigma}{dt}$ for the initial photon energy from 1.65-1.75 GeV are consistent with predictions based on a quasifree mechanism. Ultimately, this experiment establishes a baseline for a future experimental search for an exotic $\phi$-N bound state from heavier nuclear targets utilizing subthreshold/near-threshold production of $\phi$ mesons.

Book excerpt: We study coherent and incoherent phi-meson photoproduction from nuclei. The available data are analyzed in terms of single and coupled channel photoproduction. It is found that the data on coherent photoproduction can be well reproduced within a single channel optical model and show only little room for omega-phi mixing. These data indicate a normal distortion of the phi-meson in nuclei, which is compatible with the results obtained through the vector meson dominance model. The data on incoherent phi-meson photoproduction show an anomalous A-dependence resulting in a very strong phi-meson distortion. These data can be explained by a coupled channel effect through the dominant contribution from the omega --> phi or pi --> phi transition or, more speculative, through the excitation of a cryptoexotic B{sub omega-baryon}.
