Book excerpt: Stuart Nicholson's biography of Ella Fitzgerald is considered a classic in jazz literature. Drawing on original documents, interviews, and new information, Nicholson draws a complete picture of Fitzgerald's professional and personal life. Fitzgerald rose from being a pop singer with chart-novelty hits in the late '30s to become a bandleader and then one of the greatest interpreters of American popular song. Along with Billie Holiday, she virtually defined the female voice in jazz, and countless others followed in her wake and acknowledged her enormous influence. Also includes two 8-page inserts.

Book The Source of Self Regard

Download or read book The Source of Self Regard written by Toni Morrison and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Here is the Nobel Prize winner in her own words: a rich gathering of her most important essays and speeches, spanning four decades that "speaks to today’s social and political moment as directly as this morning’s headlines” (NPR). These pages give us her searing prayer for the dead of 9/11, her Nobel lecture on the power of language, her searching meditation on Martin Luther King Jr., her heart-wrenching eulogy for James Baldwin. She looks deeply into the fault lines of culture and freedom: the foreigner, female empowerment, the press, money, “black matter(s),” human rights, the artist in society, the Afro-American presence in American literature. And she turns her incisive critical eye to her own work (The Bluest Eye, Sula, Tar Baby, Jazz, Beloved, Paradise) and that of others. An essential collection from an essential writer, The Source of Self-Regard shines with the literary elegance, intellectual prowess, spiritual depth, and moral compass that have made Toni Morrison our most cherished and enduring voice.

Book Jane Froman

Download or read book Jane Froman written by Ilene Stone and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once asked to name the ten best female singers, the renowned musical producer Billy Rose replied, "There is Jane Froman and nine others." A legend in her time, Jane Froman (1907-1980) was one of Missouri's greatest success stories. Her singing career, which spanned over three decades, included radio and television, recordings, nightclub performances, Broadway shows, and Hollywood movies. Born in University City, Froman spent her childhood in the small town of Clinton and her adolescence in Columbia. After earning her associate degree from Christian (now Columbia) College, she auditioned as a vocalist for WLW, a Cincinnati radio station, and in 1934 was voted the top "girl singer" of the day in a poll of listeners. At the height of her career, during World War II, Froman volunteered to travel for the USO. On February 22, 1943, her plane crashed into the Tagus River near Lisbon, Portugal. Although she suffered horrible injuries that plagued her for the rest of her life, she continued her singing career. On crutches, she entertained the troops, giving ninety-five shows throughout Europe. Her courageous return was the focus of the 1952 movie With a Song in My Heart, starring Susan Hayward. For scenes that required singing, recordings of Froman herself were used, and the movie soundtrack became a best-selling record album. Froman's popularity led to her own television show from 1952 to 1955. In 1961, Froman retired from singing and returned to Columbia, Missouri, where she was active in volunteer work and lived out her remaining years. Drawing upon an authobiography that Froman started but never finished, Ilene Stone skillfully uses the singer's own words, along with other resource materials and extensive interviews with people who knew Froman, to produce the first biography of this extraordinary woman. Written in a clear and accessible style, Jane Froman: Missouri's First Lady of Song will be of great value to anyone interested in Missouri history, women's studies, or the history of popular entertainment in the twentieth century. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The insecure little girl was the platform God used to get to Stevie Wonder, former President, Donald J. Trump, Whitney Houston, Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope, Gladys Knight, and so many more entertainers. I didn’t know God could use the most painful part of my life as a testimony to bless me, and so many others. Marriage and family can be such a challenge no matter how young or old you are. Living for Jesus in the midst of pain can turn any strong Christian to want to give up, but God. Having faith and trust in allowing the Holy Spirit that lives in us all to become alive, and a reality can be so rewarding when we take the focus off ourselves, our situation, and the world around us. Truly believing and living the life, and character of Jesus, is overwhelming when we decide to really let Him, lead, guide and direct us. I found my work everyday, was to get up and believe, that God did send His son Jesus, just for me. I had to internalize it, live it, and walk in the belief and authority over the tricks of the adversary trying to take control of my mind and family. I had to die everyday and be willing to be used as a vessel for God to break the generational curses trying to plague my family. I had to really put my faith and non-wavering belief at the for front of my mind, family and marriage and be willing to suffer for others to see just how great Jesus really is. Helping them to see that His death, resurrection and His suffering, just for me or them wasn’t in vain.
