Book First Flag on the Summit

Download or read book First Flag on the Summit written by Sam Passo and published by Author House. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 15th Indiana Infantry Regiment was in the forefront of two of the most decisive battles in the Western Theater of the Civil War. In the Battle of Stones River, the 15th played a crucial role in reversing the tide of the battle, which was almost a total disaster for the Union forces. At the battle of Chattanooga, the 15th claimed to be the first regiment to plant a flag on the summit of Missionary Ridge during the famous charge up the slope. At both of these battles, the 15th paid a tragic price in dead and wounded. However, these battles were key to defeating the Rebels in the west. The book starts out with recruitment in Lafayette, Indiana, and follows the regiment’s campaign in western Virginia, then to Kentucky and the march to Shiloh where they participated in the second day of the battle at Shiloh. From Shiloh, they took part in the occupation of Corinth and the invasion of northern Mississippi

Book excerpt: "Investigating Iwo encourages us to explore the connection between American visual culture and World War II, particularly how the image inspired Marines, servicemembers, and civilians to carry on with the war and to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure victory over the Axis Powers. Chapters shed light on the processes through which history becomes memory and gains meaning over time. The contributors ask only that we be willing to take a closer look, to remain open to new perspectives that can deepen our understanding of familiar topics related to the flag raising, including Rosenthal's famous picture, that continue to mean so much to us today"--

Book excerpt: "Magnificent! A compelling, fast-paced novel that reveals a rarely seen dark side of Everest. A must-read!"-James W. Huston, New York Times bestselling author of The Blood Flag The view from 8,848 meters isn't always clear. Even after eight successful summits, Mount Everest guide Neil Quinn can't handle anything the mountain throws his way. Disaster strikes steps from the top, leaving him with a very old swastika-embellished ice axe that should never have been so high on the mountain-not if Everest's meticulously documented history is accurate. Danger doesn't stop at the descent. When he heads back to Europe, blackballed and alone, he struggles to discover the truth about this lost relic. Quinn's investigations soon have neo-Nazis, assassins, and history buffs vying to take possession of the axe-proof of Nazi alpine superiority, and strong evidence that a German climber was the first to summit Mount Everest. Beautifully written and meticulously researched, Summit follows two climbers across two continents as their stories intertwine across history, culminating in one final push for the top of the world. "Gripping...Farthing vividly depicts the challenges of mountain climbing."-Publishers Weekly

Book Flags of Our Fathers

Download or read book Flags of Our Fathers written by James Bradley and published by Laurel Leaf. This book was released on 2005-04-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling chronicle of one of the most famous moments in American military history--the raising of the U. S. flag at Iwo Jima during World War II--now adapted for young adults. Read the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and strength of America and its armed forces. This is a penetrating, epic look at a generation at war, told with keen insight and enormous honesty —also a major motion picture directed by Clint Eastwood. In February 1945, American Marines plunged into the surf at Iwo Jima–and into history. Through a hail of machine-gun and mortar fire, they battled to the island’s highest peak. And there, they raised a flag, signaling a historic step towards the eventual defeat of the Axis powers of World War II. A powerful account of six very different men--three of which were killed in battle-- who came together in the heroic fight for the Pacific’s most crucial island. It is the story of the difference between truth and myth, the legacy of a hero, and the brutal cost of war.

Book excerpt: Now in paperback: For decades the world has credited renowned explorer Sir Edmund Hillary with being the first person to reach the peak of Mount Everest. But was he? Evidence to the contrary arrives one day on the doorstep of Chris Elliott--an anonymous package that contains the diary of his Great Uncle Percy Brackett Elliott, an adventurer (and raving loony) who mysteriously disappeared decades ago while climbing Everest. The diary seems to indicate that Percy--not Hillary--was the first person to reach the peak. By retracing Percy's journey, Chris believes he will be able to uncover the mystery behind his disappearance and perhaps once and for all determine who was really the first person to summit Everest.
