Book The System of Protection and Industrial Development in Zimbabwe

Download or read book The System of Protection and Industrial Development in Zimbabwe written by Lindani B. Ndlovu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994, this volume’s seeks to evaluate the impact of trade restrictions and other forms of government intervention on the development of manufacturing industries in Zimbabwe in the 1980s. The study focuses on the period after independence in Zimbabwe up to 1989. The emphasis of the study is on (a) the extent and levels of effective protection afforded the industries by the system and (b) the efficiency of all industries created by the system of protection. This research seeks to assess the extent of protection created by managed trade and other forms of government intervention, and the resultant efficiency of manufacturing sector industries, using single period effective rate of protection (ERP) and domestic resource cost (DRC) estimates. The aim is to show the structure of incentives and efficiency implications of intervention for sample firms and the whole manufacturing sector.

Book Zimbabwe The Link Between Politics and the Economy

Download or read book Zimbabwe The Link Between Politics and the Economy written by Godfrey Kanyenze and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this accessible and authoritative book, Godfrey Kanyenze provides a comprehensive and far-reaching analysis of the socio-economic development in Zimbabwe in light of the expanding authoritarianism and the ongoing destruction of democratic institutions during the four decades after independence. Kanyenze describes the various phases of the socio-economic development starting with 1980 when the people of Zimbabwe saw their hard-won independence and new democracy as a promise for a "better life for all". Kanyenze highlights how by dismantling all barriers of economic and legal restraint, and that despite being necessary, The land reform programme put the political and financial interests of the elite before those of the people which continues to this day. Kanyenze reveals the governmental attacks on civil society, and notes how economic policy was not even part of an "authoritarian bargain", an implicit arrangement between ruling elites and citizens whereby citizens relinquish political freedom in exchange for public goods. And he concludes this analysis with a current update of Zimbabwe today, where citizens have nothing -neither political freedom nor public goods. This impressive and gripping account of an authoritarian capitalist system and a country in decline is a must-read for students, researchers, policymakers and those who want to better understand how politics and the economy, interests, conflicts, and power work together.

Book Public Budgeting in African Nations

Download or read book Public Budgeting in African Nations written by Peter Fuseini Haruna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Budgeting in African Nations aims to provide usable budgeting and fiscal policy management information to development practitioners interested in improving the performance of governments in the context of good governance. It shares regional and cross-cultural experiences with international audiences and gives reflective attention to comparative budgeting and fiscal policy management. With a promising economic and fiscal forecast, such information is timely for international development practitioners and for scholars and researchers interested in advancing development management. This book adopts an interdisciplinary/pragmatic approach to analyze and present research findings on public budgeting as a sustainable development tool. The central argument is that development practice will benefit from a bottom-up, decentralized approach to budgeting and fiscal policy management, involving national, sub-national, and civil society institutions. From this perspective, a balanced budget should draw from and reflect values and priorities across the full spectrum of social and political life.

Book South South Trade and Development

Download or read book South South Trade and Development written by Thyge Enevoldsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives a thorough analysis of South-South trade in a theoretical and political framework. The development of South-South trade in manufactured goods since the 1960s is treated in detail. Problems and potentials of South-South trade in a development context are highlighted through a number of case-studies: the South-South export of manufactured goods from Togo, Nicaragua and Malaysia, Zimbabwe's export of manufactures to Zambia, and India's export of capital goods to Tanzania. This leads to an assessment of the possible future role of South-South trade in furthering Third-World development.
