Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blithedale Romance (1852) is Nathaniel Hawthorne's third major romance. Its setting is a utopian farming commune based on Brook Farm, of which Hawthorne was a founding member and where he lived in 1841. The novel dramatizes the conflict between the commune's ideals and the members' private desires and romantic rivalries. In Hawthorne (1879), Henry James called it "the lightest, the brightest, the liveliest" of Hawthorne's "unhumorous fictions," while literary critic Richard Brodhead has described it as "the darkest of Hawthorne's novels.

This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the author of The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne has been established as a major writer of the nineteenth century and the most prominent chronicler of New England and its colonial history. This introductory book for students coming to Hawthorne for the first time outlines his life and writings in a clear and accessible style. Leland S. Person also explains some of the significant cultural and social movements that influenced Hawthorne's most important writings: Puritanism, Transcendentalism and Feminism. The major works, including The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance, as well as Hawthorne's important short stories and non-fiction, are analysed in detail. The book also includes a brief history and survey of Hawthorne scholarship, with special emphasis on recent studies. Students of nineteenth-century American literature will find this a rewarding and engaging introduction to this remarkable writer.

Book The Scarlet Letter Original February 1850 Uncensored Version

Download or read book The Scarlet Letter Original February 1850 Uncensored Version written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-06-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scarlet Letter caused quite a stir when it first appeared in February, 1850. The initial printing of 2,500 volumes sold out within ten days. It was one of the first mass-produced books in America and was widely read and discussed to an extent not much experienced in the young country up until that time. The Scarlet Letter - Original February 1850 Uncensored Version is the first incarnation of the book, before Hawthorne added a preface to a second edition of The Scarlet Letter which was published a month later. The story tells of Hester Prynne, condemned to wear the red letter A on her breast, as punishment for adultery - and because she resists all attempts of the Boston clergy to make her reveal the name of her child's father. Prynne's husband, an old physician who had remained in Europe, arrives in America to see her on the pillory. Assuming the name of Roger Chillingworth, he decides to seek revenge.

Book Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Romance of the Orient

Download or read book Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Romance of the Orient written by Luther S. Luedtke and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume argues that by focusing on British and American backgrounds, readers have underestimated the impact of Asia and "the East" on American novelist and short story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne's (1804-1864) writing. The central force in Hawthorne's intellectual development was New England Puritanism. It fascinated even when it sometimes repelled him. It exercised a pull on his imagination which a lifetime of varied experience did not loosen. The author recreates Hawthorne's heritage and examine his readings in material dealing with the East; he examines three of Hawthorne's "early tales" that were all written before 1830; and he looks at Hawthorne's "The Story Teller", the two-volume book of sketches and tales Hawthorne unsuccessfully tried to publish in 1834 and issued piecemeal thereafter in periodicals as annuals. The author also evaluates the role of the Eastern world in Hawthorne's view of Romance and studies some of Hawthorne's "remarkable" heroines -- Beatrice Rapaccini, Hester, Zenobia, and Miriam in particular. The author maintains that the Puritan element in Hawthorne's ancestry has been overstressed and that insufficient attention has been paid to the equally important travel-adventure-exploration aspect of Hawthorne's heritage and craft.

Book excerpt: The Editor wishes to assemble, upon the high aesthetic ground..., writers of different schools, -that the antagonistic views of Philosophy, of Individual and of Social Culture... may be brought together.-from "Prospectus"Intended as a periodical of the Transcendentalist movement, Aesthetic Papers published just one issue, in 1849, but what an issue it is. Featuring the first appearance in print of Thoreau's dramatically influential essay "Civil Disobedience," it also offered a selection of essays, criticism, and poetry from familiar names including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Parke Godwin, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and J.J.G. Wilkinson. An important "lost" volume of the vigorous intellectualism of the mid-19th century; this is a treasure for today's readers.American activist ELIZABETH PALMER PEABODY (1804-1894) was a tireless member of Massachusetts' Transcendentalist society, and was a sister-in-law to both author Nathaniel Hawthorne and educational reformer Horace Mann. Her battles encompassed the abolition of slavery, the rights of Native Americans and women, and the improvement of American education. As the founder of kindergarten in the United States and perhaps the first female publisher in America, she exerted a profound influence over the nation's public life and public institutions.
