Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Geology To prevent misconception, I will say at Once that this book has no pretensions to be a. Guide to any examina tion, but is intended to introduce the really earnest student to the study of Geology. Examinations, how ever, are not to be ignored 3 it is indisputable that they are important and indispensable aids to education; but in my experience I find that a student who makes them the ultimatum of his study not only loses the true pleasure derived from an acquaintance with the secrets Of nature and the accumulation of intellectual wealth, but he Of ten acquires a secret distaste for the subject Of his studies. The stones of the walls have been chipped and dressed with chisels and hammers the marble of the chimney-pieces has been smoothed and polished; the slates have been split into thin plates. But some of these building mate rials have undergone much greater changes. The bricks, for instance, were originally soft clay which has been hardened by being baked in ovens. The mortar by which the stones or bricks of the walls are held together. Has been obtained by burning limestone in kilns. The iron used in the house was first of all in the state of a dull red or brown stone, which had to be roasted and melted before the clear bright metal came out of it. I 3. But although these various stones differ so much from each other, they agree in one point - they come from underneath the surface of the ground. If you could trace back each of them to the place from which it came you would find that the freestone and limestone were taken out of quarries, perhaps not very far away, that the slates were cut out of the side of some hill, probably in Wales, that the marble was quarried out of some distant moun tain, possibly in Italy, that the coal was dug out of mines, sunk deep into the earth in some part of Bri tain, and that the bricks were made from clay dug out of pits on some low ground in your neighbourhood. Thus some rocks are sandstones or limestones, others are slates or schists, and others are ancient or modern lavas. These occur in beds or masses of many kinds, and have often been folded, broken, or otherwise changed. As a result of composition, structure, and dynamic changes we have land forms, the study of which is included in Part II. Book An Introduction to Geology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Geology Classic Reprint written by William Berryman Scott and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Geology This book had its origin in the attempt to write introductory work, dealing principally with American Geology, upon the lines of Sir Archibald Geikie's excellent little "Class-Book." In spite of vigorous efforts at compression, it has expanded to its present size, though the difference from the "Class-Book," in this respect, lies not so much in the quantity of matter as in the larger size of the type and illustrations. The book is intended to serve as an introduction to the science of Geology, both for students who desire to pursue the subject exhaustively, and also for the much larger class of those who wish merely to obtain an outline of the methods and principal results of the science. To the future specialist it will be of advantage to go over the whole ground in an elementary course, so that he may appreciate the relative significance of the various parts, and their bearing upon one another. This accomplished, he may pursue his chosen branch much more intelligently than if he were to confine his attention exclusively to that branch from the beginning of his studies. Students, and only too often their instructors, are apt to prefer a text-book upon which they can lean with implicit confidence, and which never leaves them in doubt upon any subject, but is always ready to pronounce a definite and final opinion. They dislike being called upon to weigh evidence and balance probabilities, and to suspend judgment when the testimony is insufficient to justify a decision. Book An Elementary Course of Geology Mineralogy Physical Geography Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Course of Geology Mineralogy Physical Geography Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by David Thomas Ansted and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course of Geology, Mineralogy, Physical Geography, Vol. 1 The First Edition of this work, published in 1850, having been, found adapted for a certain class of readers and students, the Author has been careful, in preparing a Second Edition, to adhere to those peculiarities of treatment in which it differs from other works hitherto published on Geology. He believes these to be first, its comprehensiveness, as including the elements of all departments of Geological science; secondly, its compactness, as bringing within a narrow space a great multi tude of facts important to be known; and thirdly, its method, as presenting those numerous facts in a convenient order. He is aware that these qualities are obtained at the sacrifice of a certain amount of popularity, and he can hardly h0pe to render very attractive to the general reader the accumulation of material which it has been his chief object not to dissipate. In preparing a new edition, he has shortened some parts of the work and considerably increased other parts, endeavouring to bring into a somewhat better proportion the various divisions of the subject. He has carefully modified the Mineralogy, retaining however in the main the former method of arrangement, which he believes to be the one best adapted for the Geological student; and he has greatly added to the list of synonyms, which now includes 1400 names. Download or read book A Compend of Geology Classic Reprint written by Joseph Le Conte and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compend of Geology Origin of soil - If we dig into the earth anywhere, at a certain depth, greater in some places than in others, we find rock. How was the earthy soil formed? Per haps some imagine that it is an original clothing intended to cover the rocky nakedness of the new-born earth. But the very first lesson to be learned by the study of geology is that everything that we see, even the most enduring such as hills, mountains, rocks, etc. - have become what they are, usually by a slow process. N ow, soils are no exceptions. All soil is formed by a disintegration or rotting down of rocks. Sometimes the soils remain resting on the rocks from which they were formed sometimes they are removed to another place, as, e. G., from hill-sides to bottom-lands sometimes they are carried by streams to great distances, and deposited as sedi ments, and again raised as land but in all cases they are formed in the same way - viz., by the rotting down of rocks under the slow action Of the atmosphere. The active ingredients of the air in this process are oxygen, carbonic acid (carbon dioxide), and water, as va por or as moisture. N ow, rain-water contains in solution both oxygen and carbon dioxide. Therefore, rain-water, wetting the surface and penetrating the cracks Of rocks, is the great agent of the formation of soil. Download or read book The Natural History of Igneous Rocks Classic Reprint written by Alfred Harker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence.
