Book First Book of Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Book of Forestry Classic Reprint written by Filibert Roth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Forestry During the last twenty years the general interest in forestry has grown with remarkable rapidity in all parts of our country. The federal government has set aside large forest reserves, and several states have established reservations or parks. The private owners of large tracts of forest lands are employing trained foresters to care for their property, and an improvement in the smaller holdings is everywhere noticeable. Forestry is taught in two special schools in America, and elementary courses on the subject are given in several colleges and preparatory schools. A desire has been expressed to introduce this useful and interesting study into our public schools and country homes, and this volume is an attempt to provide a book on the subject which shall satisfy this demand. In keeping with this purpose there has been no attempt to write a textbook or manual of forestry; but an effort has been made to present in simple, non-technical language some of the general principles underlying the science, and to state the methods which are employed and the objects to be attained in the practice of forestry. Early association with the well-kept forests of Germany, observations made in the widely differing forest districts of our own country, and three years' experience in teaching forestry have helped to make the responsible task of preparing this book a pleasure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Forestry, Vol. 1: The Forest Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith the manuscript of the first half of "A Primer of Forestry," and to recommend its publication as Bulletin No. 24, Part I, of this Division. The present part ("The Forest") deals with the units which compose the forest, with its character as an organic whole, and with its enemies. It may be said to sketch the foundation of the practice of forestry and of forest policy. Part II will be entitled "Practical Forestry," and will deal with the practice of forestry, with work in the woods, with the relations of the forest to the weather and the streams, and will conclude with a brief description of forestry at home and abroad. For many of the illustrations of Part I, I am indebted to the kindness of several gentlemen not connected with this Division. Book Principles of American Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of American Forestry Classic Reprint written by Samuel Bowdlear Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of American Forestry The first edition of copies of Forestry in Minne sota was published by the Minnesota Forestry Association and has been received with much favor. It is now probably used in more than fourteen of the agricultural colleges as their chief text book on this important subject and it is also used in a number of normal and high schools in this and other states, either as a text book or as supplementary reading. The first edition is practically exhausted, but the demand for it continues to increase, and it is this demand, and the fact that it concerns a subject closely related to the development of this state, which has induced the Board of Regents to publish it as a portion of the report of the Geological and Natural History Survey of Minnesota. Book Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry Classic Reprint written by Adam Friedrich Schwappach and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry By way of preface to this translation of Professor Schwappach's Forstwissenschaft, a word or two of explanation seems necessary. The author has been careful to avoid anything which is only locally applicable, so that the matter which the book contains is quite as suitable for British as for German readers. Forest conditions change within Germany as they do within our own country, but the principles - the natural laws - governing forest practice are unalterable, being the same at all times and in all places. This being so, the English adaptation of a book dealing concisely with these principles and emanating from such an able author must surely be useful. Forestry in its economic aspect is the subject treated, and anything peculiar to Germany or any other country is specifically mentioned. Some portions of the original, particularly Forest History and Valuation, have been abridged; while those bearing on Sowing and Planting, Insects, Fungi, and Forest Management have been somewhat extended. The illustrations also have been added. I must, no doubt, hold myself responsible for the book in the form in which it is now given to English readers, but I desire to acknowledge my indebtedness to Dr. Eric A. Nobbs, of the Department of Agriculture, Cape of Good Hope, who began the translation. Also to Dr. William Somerville, of the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries, my thanks are due for the helpful interest he has taken in the work. Book What Is Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Is Forestry Classic Reprint written by B. E. Fernow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Forestry? Sir: The unusual interest shown in the subject-matter contained in the following pages, when presented in the form of public addresses delivered by me as your representative before various bodies (notably before the State Boards of Agriculture of Kansas and Nebraska and the Chamber of Commerce of Rochester, New York), makes it appear desirable to publish the same for a larger audience. At first sight it may be thought incongruous to present under one cover the two aspects of forestry, the reader from the treeless plains being seemingly not interested in the treatment of the forest cover in wooded country, and vice versa. But while on general principles it is desirable that all citizens should understand the forestry problem as it presents itself in the different parts of the country, the knowledge which is gained in the natural for est is an aid in forest-planting, and the principles which underlie forest planting are also to some extent of influence in forest management. Hence both aspects are best presented together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Forestry Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forestry Work Classic Reprint written by W. H. Whellens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Work MY reason for attempting to write of forestry work is that I feel there is need for a comparatively low-priced book giving a brief outline of the principles of sylviculture, and describing in more detail and in simple language the actual work, and the methods of arriving at certain facts and figures, which might serve as a stepping-stone to larger and more expensive works. Many young lads, when first entering the woods, cannot afford to buy expensive books, and are thus at a loss to know the proper way to do certain work, and the reason why it is done in certain ways. This small work may help to explain many of these things. It may also prove useful to older and more experienced men as a reference book, through the collection of tables at the end. Book A Primer of Forestry Vol 2

Download or read book A Primer of Forestry Vol 2 written by Gifford Pinchot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Forestry, Vol. 2: Practical Forestry Next to the earth itself the forest is the most useful servant of man. Not only does it sustain and regulate the streams, moderate the winds, and beautify the land, but it also supplies wood, the most widely used of all materials. Its uses are numberless, and the demands which are made upon it by mankind are numberless also. It is essential to the well-being of mankind that these demands should be met. They must be met steadily, fully, and at the right time if the forest is to give its best service. The object of practical forestry is precisely to make the forest render its best service to man in such a way as to increase rather than to diminish its usefulness in the future. Forest management and conservative lumbering are other names for practical forestry. Under whatever name it may be known, practical forestry means both the use and the preservation of the forest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Forestry Conditions: Northern Wisconsin Ever since assuming charge of the Division the writer has contended that the primary requisite for Government activity on behalf of for estry was a tolerably accurate knowledge of the forest conditions and forestry interests of the country but he was met with the objection that it would be improper policy to do for one State what every other State might with equal right demand to have done for it, and at the same time the means placed at his disposal were never sufficient to permit him to acquire this information with any satisfactory degree of accuracy for the whole country at once. Book Report on Forests and Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on Forests and Forestry Classic Reprint written by John Aston Warder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Forests and Forestry In that paper, the commissioners were directed to be present upon the ground, if possible, by the first of May, and to remain until the end of October. They were instructed to organize as a committee, in the pres ence of the executive commissioner. Upon this committee devolved certain duties, such as the nomination of jurors. The chairman advised the Department of State of its organization, and of the progress of its labors. It is unnecessary here to recur to that part of the history of the commission and of the committee, further than to express individual regret that it became necessary, in some instances, to nominate its mem bers as candidates for appointments upon the International Jury. In explanation, it may be stated that it was found impossible to engage the services of a sufficient number of fellow-countrymen, and those who were obliged, by the duties of their office, to remain in Vienna were forced to accept these additional burdens. Book The Profession of Forestry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Profession of Forestry Classic Reprint written by Henry S. Graves and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Profession of Forestry During the last decade forestry in the United States has developed with remarkable rapidity. The inauguration of forest management on the National Forests, the activity of various States in public for estry, and the increasing interest of private owners in timber growing and protection have resulted in a marked demand for trained foresters. When active work in forestry first began there were no forest schools in the country, and those entering upon the work were obliged to go to Europe for technical training. In anticipation of the need for foresters, and in order to aid in the development of for estry, several progressive institutions established schools of forestry even before the demand for any considerable number of men was definitely assured. The first professional school was established at Cornell University in 1898. This was followed in 1900 by the Yale Forest School. Private instruction in forestry was given at Biltmore, North Carolina, by Doctor Schenck in connection with his work on the Vanderbilt estate as early as 1897, and a school for rangers was started by the State Of 'pennsylvania at Mont Alto, Pennsylvania, in 1903. Since that time instruction in forestry has been introduced in a large num ber of institutions. To-day there are 22 institutions which give courses leading to a degree in forestry, and about 40 others which include forestry in their curricula. It is estimated that there are fully 500 men in the United States with a greater or less degree of technical training, in addition to forest rangers who began without a knowledge of the technical side of forestry, but many of whom through their experience in National and State forest work under technical direction have acquired considerable knowledge of certain phases of the subject. There are probably about young men studying in the forest schools. Forestry may therefore be considered an established profession in the United States. Hundreds of young men are considering it as a life vocation, and are eager to be informed regarding the character of work involved, the elements necessary for success, the requirements for an adequate training, the present and probable future opportuni ties for work, and its possibilities as a means of livelihood. Book Dakota Forestry Pamphlets Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dakota Forestry Pamphlets Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by North Dakota Agricultural College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dakota Forestry Pamphlets, Vol. 1 This variety occurs in plats 1, 24, 29k and 30. This is the first season in which the spruce has made anything like satis factory growth. In 1891, the trees in plat 1 made an average growth of one inch, only a very few trees showing any tendency to put out a leading branch and to develop tree form. The trees of this variety in the other plats, being set that season, made almost no growth. During 1892 an average growth of three inches has been made by the trees in plat 1. A large part of them are establishing leading branches, the longest new growth being nearly six inches. The fact that these trees have made three times as great a growth as during any previous year is no doubt partly due to the unusually wet season. This indi cation is emphasized by the fact that, during this season, other spruces in plats of two years planting made greater growth than did these spruces at that stage of planting. Again, the spruces in plat 1 have, during this season, made greater growth than those of any of the later planted plats. This would indi cate that, as the trees become longer established their yearly growth increases, and the increased tendency of the oldest trees to put out leading branches, would seem to confirm this prob ability. With the exception of the Scotch Pine, the Black Hills Spruce is the most promising evergreen now growing at this Station. Book First Annual Report of the State Forester of Wisconsin 1906 Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Annual Report of the State Forester of Wisconsin 1906 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report of the State Forester of Wisconsin 1906 Only a few years ago Wisconsin was one of the greatest timber states in this country and even the lumbermen and woodsmen, who were directly and personally interested in the supply of tim ber, could not realize that the pineries which seemed so vast would in a few years he a thing of the past. But thousands of axemen were cutting their way on all sides into the great virgin forests and back of them, fed by their slashings, came the arch enemy fire and completed the devastation, until today, where the great pines once stood, are vast areas of burned over cuttings. These unproductive wastes should be a matter of concern, not alone to the owner and county in which they lie, but to the whole state as well, for forests are crops just as much as wheat or corn and although they take a long time to mature, still, if managed systematically and conservatively, they will furnish annually a supply of mature timber and thus save to the state the many in dustries which depend upon the forests for their raw material. The aims of forestry are manifold, but the two most important are to conserve the forests by wise use and protect the water supply and, keeping these important points in mind, it is to be hoped that the state will pursue a broad forest policy and grad ually acquire large forest reserves which will protect the head waters oi the rivers and important streams. If the state grad ually purchases large areas of natural forest land, restocking all denuded areas as soon as the slash is destroyed, it will not only be building prosperity for the future, but can confidently count on receiving a very generous return on the investment in the shape of mature timber. Book The Forest Ranger

Download or read book The Forest Ranger written by Herbert Kaufman and published by Resources for the Future. This book was released on 1967 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the rare book that remains in print for nearly fifty years, earning wide acclaim as a classic. The Forest Ranger has been essential reading for generations of professionals and scholars in forestry, public administration, and organizational behavior who are interested in the administration of public lands and how the top managers of a large, dispersed organization with multiple objectives like the Forest Service shape the behavior of its field officers into a coherent, unified program. Published as a special reprint in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Forest Service, The Forest Ranger is as relevant and timely today as when it was first issued in 1960. In addition to the original text, this special reprint of The Forest Ranger includes two new forewords and an afterword that highlight how much we have learned from Herbert Kaufman. The first foreword, by Harold K. (Pete) Steen, former president of the Forest History Society, considers the book's impact on the forestry community and explains its continued relevance in light of changes in the culture and mission of today's Forest Service. The second, by Richard P. Nathan, codirector of the Rockefeller Institute of Government, considers the book's contribution to our understanding of administrative and organizational behavior. The new afterword by author Herbert Kaufman describes how his landmark study came into being and offers a candid assessment of how his theories about the agency's operations and its future have held up over time. In 1960, the Forest Service had a well-deserved reputation for excellence, and The Forest Ranger was a seminal analysis of the hows and whys of its success. Kaufmanalso warned, however, that an organization so unified and well adapted to its environment would have difficulties navigating social change. He was right in his concerns: the environmental, civil rights, and women's movements have all presented challenges to the character and purpose of the Forest Service, ultimately changing the organization in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. Now, as then, The Forest Ranger is a striking and prescient case study of how a complex organization operates and evolves over time.
