Book When Do Firms Adjust Prices Evidence from Micro Panel Data

Download or read book When Do Firms Adjust Prices Evidence from Micro Panel Data written by Sarah M. Lein and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The price-setting behavior of manufacturing firms is examined using a large panel of quarterly firm survey data from 1984 to 2007, which allows changes in firms' prices to be linked to several firm-specific variables. The results show that state-dependent pricing is clearly present in a low-inflation environment and that variables measuring the current situation of the firm, especially costs for intermediate products, are important determinants of price adjustments. Compared to purely time-dependent features, the state-dependent variables significantly add to the explanatory power of a price adjustment probability model. Macroeconomic factors are significant but contribute little in terms of the goodness of fit. Furthermore, when taking into account sticky plan models by excluding possibly predetermined price changes, the importance of state-dependent factors becomes even greater.

Book Optimal Dynamic Investment Policies of a Value Maximizing Firm

Download or read book Optimal Dynamic Investment Policies of a Value Maximizing Firm written by Peter M. Kort and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. Scope of the Book This book is a contribution to the area of "dynamic models of the firm". The motivation for this kind of research is the following: Empirical studies (e.g. Albach (1976)) have shown that the development of the firm over time can be divided into different stages. such as growth. stationarity and contraction. In order to understand and evaluate these stages in a proper way. it is important to develop a suitable theoretical framework. To that end. economists have applied dynamic mathematical techniques. such as optimal control theory. calculus of variations and dynamic programming to design and analyse dynamic models of the firm. In this way. the economic theory of the firm is extended to a dynamic context. Within the field of the dynamics of the firm this book - develops a general investment decision rule. based on the concept "net present value of marginal investment". which is applicable in deterministic dynamic models of the firm; - studies the influence of adjustment costs of investment on optimal dynamic firm behavior; - extends the stochastic dynamic theory of the firm by connecting it with a dynamic version of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Before elaborating on "the dynamics of the firm". we first review the subject of net present value in the classical analysis.

Book Firm Output Adjustment to Trade Liberalization

Download or read book Firm Output Adjustment to Trade Liberalization written by Mark Andrew Dutz and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Output among firms is likely to be reallocated as a result of trade liberalization. In imperfectly competitive industries, such a "rationalization" effect can be an important component of the welfare impact of trade reform.

Book Adjustment Costs Irreversibility and Investment Patterns in African Manufacturing

Download or read book Adjustment Costs Irreversibility and Investment Patterns in African Manufacturing written by Arne Bigsten and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-07 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper seeks to determine whether firm level investment behavior in the manufacturing sectors of Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe is more accurately described by standard theory based on quadratic adjustment costs or by alternative models, based on irreversibilities or fixed costs. The importance of this issue stems first from a theoretical perspective, given that the adjustment cost function constitutes one of the cornerstones of the investment equation, and misspecification of adjustment costs is likely to yield a misspecified investment model. Second, empirically, information on the structure and size of adjustment costs is important for understanding how investment responds to changes in fundamentals. For example, some non-quadratic adjustment cost models imply that firm investment is nonlinear: periods of little response to shocks can be followed by intensive responses to both current and accumulated shocks. The structure of adjustment costs also has significant implications for understanding aggregate investment dynamics. 2.

Book Capital Structure and Corporate Financing Decisions

Download or read book Capital Structure and Corporate Financing Decisions written by H. Kent Baker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to making better capital structure and corporate financing decisions in today's dynamic business environment Given the dramatic changes that have recently occurred in the economy, the topic of capital structure and corporate financing decisions is critically important. The fact is that firms need to constantly revisit their portfolio of debt, equity, and hybrid securities to finance assets, operations, and future growth. Capital Structure and Corporate Financing Decisions provides an in-depth examination of critical capital structure topics, including discussions of basic capital structure components, key theories and practices, and practical application in an increasingly complex corporate world. Throughout, the book emphasizes how a sound capital structure simultaneously minimizes the firm's cost of capital and maximizes the value to shareholders. Offers a strategic focus that allows you to understand how financing decisions relates to a firm's overall corporate policy Consists of contributed chapters from both academics and experienced professionals, offering a variety of perspectives and a rich interplay of ideas Contains information from survey research describing actual financial practices of firms This valuable resource takes a practical approach to capital structure by discussing why various theories make sense and how firms use them to solve problems and create wealth. In the wake of the recent financial crisis, the insights found here are essential to excelling in today's volatile business environment.

Book Policies Facilitating Firm Adjustment to Globalization

Download or read book Policies Facilitating Firm Adjustment to Globalization written by Bernard M. Hoekman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hoekman and Javorcik focus on policies facilitating firm adjustment to globalization. They briefly review the effects of trade and investment liberalization on firms, focusing on within-industry effects. They postulate that governments' role in supporting the process is to (1) ensure that firms face "right" incentives to adjust, and (2) intervene in areas where market failures are present. Their main message is that while many policies could be adopted to address market failures, they need to be carefully designed and implemented in a stable macroeconomic environment. An institutional infrastructure that supports the functioning of modern markets is most important. Proactive support policies of whatever stripe should be subject to cost-benefit analysis, based on the existence of an identified market failure, and monitored for performance and cost effectiveness. Transparency and accountability are critical in ensuring that interventions accomplish their intended objectives rather than being vehicles for rent seeking. This paper--a product of the Trade Team, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to examine the effects of globalization on developing countries"--World Bank web site.

Book Valuation Approaches and Metrics

Download or read book Valuation Approaches and Metrics written by Aswath Damodaran and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2005 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valuation lies at the heart of much of what we do in finance, whether it is the study of market efficiency and questions about corporate governance or the comparison of different investment decision rules in capital budgeting. In this paper, we consider the theory and evidence on valuation approaches. We begin by surveying the literature on discounted cash flow valuation models, ranging from the first mentions of the dividend discount model to value stocks to the use of excess return models in more recent years. In the second part of the paper, we examine relative valuation models and, in particular, the use of multiples and comparables in valuation and evaluate whether relative valuation models yield more or less precise estimates of value than discounted cash flow models. In the final part of the paper, we set the stage for further research in valuation by noting the estimation challenges we face as companies globalize and become exposed to risk in multiple countries.
