Book Developing Firefighter Resiliency

Download or read book Developing Firefighter Resiliency written by Bob Carpenter and published by Fire Engineering Books. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three Key Messages: -- This is important. -- You can do it. -- I won't give up on you. Training ordinary people to do extraordinary things requires an understanding of how we learn. Developing Firefighter Resiliency starts with the basic psychophysical aspects of learning. The fire service has unwittingly used a failure-based training model for many years. Hands-on training exercises are often based on unachievable objectives. Trainers are often not educated about the psychology of adult learning or the effect of stress during learning. Consequently, participants face learning activities with mastery-level skill requirement to succeed when competency has yet to be established. This amounts to a never-ending diet of tests without actual skill development. Accessing knowledge under extreme circumstances cannot be left to chance, because the penalty for failure is severe. This book provides the roadmap for a journey to train, establish relevancy for the lessons, develop competency in the skills, and capitalize on confidence to achieve mastery. We study the impact of a stressful environment on the ability to learn and function.

Book Architecture and Fire

Download or read book Architecture and Fire written by Stamatis Zografos and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture and Fire develops a conceptual reassessment of architectural conservation through the study of the intimate relationship between architecture and fire. Stamatis Zografos expands on the general agreement among many theorists that the primitive hut was erected around fire – locating fire as the first memory of architecture, at the very beginning of architectural evolution. Following the introduction, Zografos analyses the archive and the renewed interest in the study of archives through the psychoanalysis of Jacques Derrida. He moves on to explore the ambivalent nature of fire, employing the conflicting philosophies of Gaston Bachelard and Henri Bergson to do so, before discussing architectural conservation and the relationship between listed buildings, the function of archives, and the preservation of memories from the past. The following chapter investigates how architecture evolves by absorbing and accommodating fire, while the penultimate chapter examines the critical moment of architectural evolution: the destruction of buildings by fire, with a focus on the tragic disaster at London’s Grenfell Tower in 2017. Zografos concludes with thoughts on Freud’s drive theory. He argues the practice of architectural conservation is an expression of the life drive and a simultaneous repression of the death drive, which suggests controlled destruction should be an integral part of the conservation agenda. Architecture and Fire is founded in new interdisciplinary research navigating across the boundaries of architecture, conservation, archival theory, classical mythology, evolutionary theory, thermodynamics, philosophy and psychoanalysis. It will be of interest to readers working in and around these disciplines.

Book Fire and Rescue Service manual

Download or read book Fire and Rescue Service manual written by Great Britain. Fire Service Inspectorate and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-03-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incidents involving rescue from road vehicles are dramatically increasing in frequency. There are some 3500 deaths on the road each year, with 35,000 serious injuries. Modern motor vehicles are becoming safer for occupants, due to advancement in technology, so persons are more likely to survive high impact speeds, but are also more likely to become entrapped. The Fire and Rescue Service, as the primary rescue service, requires national guidance to ensure a similar standard of response anywhere in the UK. This manual is designed to highlight current best practice with regard to vehicle rescue techniques and first responder trauma care. Each chapter forms an independent reference source, but the publication as a whole forms a complete guide. Chapters cover: vehicle design and construction; dealing with incidents; safety procedures; operational procedures; extrication equipment; medical considerations and trauma care; Integrated Personal Development System (I.P.D.S.). Appendices cover: Highways Agency/Fire and Rescue Service memorandum of understanding; training and general information; and emergency services personnel (ESP) aide mâmoire. The CD-ROM, "Vehicle extrication techniques", is a multi media guide to rescue tool handling and extrication techniques.
