Download or read book Firefighter Fatality Retrospective Study 1990 2000 written by Barry Leonard and published by . This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year in the U.S. & its protectorates, approx. 100 firefighters are killed while on duty & tens of thousands are injured. Although the number of firefighter fatalities has steadily decreased over the past 20 years, the incidence of firefighter fatalities per 100,000 incidents has actually risen. This report identifies trends in mortality & examines relationships among data elements. Data were collected on firefighter fatalities between 1990 & 2000. Using this analysis, better targeted prevention strategies can be developed to reduce firefighter deaths by 25% by 2005. This analysis allowed for comparisons over time to determine any changes in firefighter mortality, with a depth of scrutiny not present in earlier analyses. Charts & tables.

Book excerpt: This report continues a series of annual studies by the USFA of on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States. The USFA is the single public agency source of information for all on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States each year. The unique and specific objective of this study is to identify all on-duty firefighter fatalities that occurred in the United States and its protectorates in 2000, and to present in summary form the circumstances surrounding each occurrence. The study is intended to help identify approaches that could reduce the number of firefighter deaths in future years. In addition to the 2001 overall findings, this study includes assessments of trends over the past 5 years and special analyses on heart attacks and ways to immediately prevent future firefighter deaths.
