Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire and Electricity are God’s gifts. They are boon when implemented with prudence, wisdom and abided by rules. They turn into curses when mishandled. Worldwide all are concerned with electrical fire and its prevention. Measures are taken continuously on intellectual, technical and practical fronts to avert the fire and save lives and assets. Despite all out efforts there are failures either in electrical installations or maintenance or design or in material and fire finds the way out; endangering life and material. What could be the reasons? Let us investigate different way. Taking into consideration benchmark of good design, planning, applying codes and standards, I contemplated and visualize about the mistakes that frequently occur or could occur mainly at execution level and this is the focal point of explanation in this book.

Book Electricity as a Fire Hazard

Download or read book Electricity as a Fire Hazard written by W. J. Jenks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity as a Fire Hazard We cannot but believe that the losses from fire, legitimately traceable to electric currents, have been due to the ignorance rather than the negligence of those in charge of such plants, and that, if the true limitations of conductors carrying currents were better known, electrical fires would become a thing of the past. That electricity can be distributed safely is admitted even by the fire underwriters, but it took them a long time to make up their minds to the fact. While the fire underwriters may be looked upon in some quarters as enemies to electric lighting, we believe that all well-informed and right-thinking members of the electrical community are in accord with their efforts to secure proper electric installation; and, while the insurance regulations may err on the side of safety, the public, after all, benefit thereby in the long run. As Mr. Jenks shows, the apparent excessive factor of safety called for by the underwriters' rules is demanded by reason of the fact that in many cases conductors are, after a time, called upon for service far in excess of that for which they were originally designed - and this without any attempt at fraud or deception. It is too much to hope that complete immunity from electrical fires can be obtained, even under the best system of rules; but, when the early and defective installations are finally remodeled, it is safe to say that an electrical fire will be a rare occurrence. What is really now needed is that the various rules governing electrical installations should be brought to the point of harmony and uniformity. In some respects they now disagree and conflict, but there should be no trouble in making them support each other alike in letter and spirit. Such uniform rules would sound the death knell of bad work. The "World's Fair" of last year was responsible for many congresses and social gatherings of various orders being held in the far-famed city of the West. It was only fitting, therefore, that the insurance underwriters of the States, amongst others, should assemble in congress within the precincts of the great show, and thus happily combine pleasure with business. It was also no doubt right and proper that in the midst of their festivities, like the Egyptians of old, they should be reminded of more serious matters, and, perhaps, as a shocker, nothing more suitable could have been paraded than that well-worn skeleton - the "electrical fire hazard." For, rightly or wrongly, the fire underwriter does largely attribute his heavy losses of late years in the States to the electrical fiend. Book California Burning

Download or read book California Burning written by Katherine Blunt and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory, urgent narrative with national implications, exploring the decline of California’s largest utility company that led to countless wildfires — including the one that destroyed the town of Paradise – and the human cost of infrastructure failure Pacific Gas and Electric was a legacy company built by innovators and visionaries, establishing California as a desirable home and economic powerhouse. In California Burning, Wall Street Journal reporter and Pulitzer finalist Katherine Blunt examines how that legacy fell apart—unraveling a long history of deadly failures in which Pacific Gas and Electric endangered millions of Northern Californians, through criminal neglect of its infrastructure. As PG&E prioritized profits and politics, power lines went unchecked—until a rusted hook purchased for 56 cents in 1921 split in two, sparking the deadliest wildfire in California history. Beginning with PG&E’s public reckoning after the Paradise fire, Blunt chronicles the evolution of PG&E’s shareholder base, from innovators who built some of California's first long-distance power lines to aggressive investors keen on reaping dividends. Following key players through pivotal decisions and legal battles, California Burning reveals the forces that shaped the plight of PG&E: deregulation and market-gaming led by Enron Corp., an unyielding push for renewable energy, and a swift increase in wildfire risk throughout the West, while regulators and lawmakers pushed their own agendas. California Burning is a deeply reported, character-driven narrative, the story of a disaster expanding into a much bigger exploration of accountability. It’s an American tragedy that serves as a cautionary tale for utilities across the nation—especially as climate change makes aging infrastructure more vulnerable, with potentially fatal consequences.

Book Electricity Vs Fire

Download or read book Electricity Vs Fire written by Walter C. Patterson and published by Walt Patterson. This book was released on 2015 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why can't you breathe in Beijing? Why are governments wrangling over the Arctic seabed? Why have we ever more extreme weather worldwide? The answer is fire. Fire in heaters, furnaces, engines and power stations is poisoning air in megacities everywhere. Feeding fire is why governments worry about fuel supplies. Fire produces the carbon dioxide upsetting planetary systems. Fire threatens our future. We think of fire as welcoming. But fire is violent, extreme, rapidly turning resources into wastes, toxic and pernicious. Yet we still rely on fire, even when we need not, and despite the ever intensifying problems fire creates. To address pollution, security, and climate we need to minimize human use of fire. Fire, however, has let us control electricity. Electricity, in turn, may save us from fire. Electricity Vs Fire is The Fight For Our Future.

Book Dirty Electricity

Download or read book Dirty Electricity written by Samuel Milham MD MPH and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Thomas Edison began wiring New York City with a direct current electricity distribution system in the 1880s, he gave humankind the magic of electric light, heat, and power; in the process, though, he inadvertently opened a Pandoras Box of unimaginable illness and death. Dirty Electricity tells the story of Dr. Samuel Milham, the scientist who first alerted the world about the frightening link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and human disease. Milham takes readers through his early years and education, following the twisting path that led to his discovery that most of the twentieth century diseases of civilization, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and suicide, are caused by electromagnetic field exposure. In the second edition, he explains how electrical exposure does its damage, and how electricity is causing our current epidemics of asthma, diabetes and obesity. Dr. Milham warns that because of the recent proliferation of radio frequency radiation from cell phones and towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-max systems, broadband internet over power lines, and personal electronic equipment, we may be facing a looming epidemic of morbidity and mortality. In Dirty Electricity, he reveals the steps we must take, personally and as a society, to coexist with this marvelous but dangerous technology.
