Book Fire and Explosion Risks

Download or read book Fire and Explosion Risks written by Von Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fire and Explosion Risks: A Handbook Dealing With the Detection, Investigation, and Prevention of Dangers Arising From Fires and Explosions of Chemico-Technical Substances and Establishments; For the Use of Fire Insurance Officials, Fire Brigade Officers, Members of the Legal Prof Of late years great strides have been made in chemistry in connection with Fire Assurance, the prevention and extinction of fires, and the detection of the causes of accidental or premeditated outbreaks; in fact, chemistry has become an indispensable aid in the solution of these important problems. Keeping pace with the development of our civilisation, we may expect that, in the future, the assistance of chemistry will be more and more relied on in the regulation of insurances, the promulgation of legal enactments against fire risk, the detection of incendiarism, and in cases of dispute before the courts. In such eventualities two ways are open, viz.: - 1. Calling in the aid of a chemist, a proceeding not always feasible, oftentimes expensive, and sometimes unsatisfactory, owing to the available chemist being imperfectly versed in the matter of fire prevention. 2. Consulting the literature. This resource also is not always available to the officials interested; and even when it is, the information respecting fire prevention is scattered over such a wide area, as to necessitate special study in order to separate the desired particulars from the enormous bulk of the literature itself. In fact, apart from a few special treatises, such as Professor Hapke's interesting work on "Spontaneous Ignition," Dr. M. Richter's book on "Benzine Fires," and Meunier's old work, there is at the present time no single book dealing so fully with fire risks and fire prevention, in the domain of chemical technology, as to be suitable for all cases, and for the laity. Book Fire and Explosion Hazards Handbook of Industrial Chemicals

Download or read book Fire and Explosion Hazards Handbook of Industrial Chemicals written by Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook provides ready information on the fire and chemical reactivity of commonly used chemicals. Its purpose is to provide basic information important to the safe handling of chemicals and to help provide guidance in responding to a hazardous materials incident, in particular, incidents involving reactive chemicals and materials posing fire and explosion hazards. The volume has been written for chemical handling specialists, first responders to hazardous materials incidents, and firefighters. The basic definition used for a hazard materials incident is any situation that may potentially lead to catastrophic fire or explosion, and or human exposed to a toxic chemical. This situation may result from a spill of a hazardous material, a leak from a storage vessel or shipping container, or the mixing of incompatible chemicals whereby a chemical reaction could occur resulting in the release of energy and generation of toxic and perhaps flammable by-products. The volume provides chemical specific information, providing the reader with rigorous information on the chemical of interest. This book is a compendium of chemical specific fire and chemical reactivity data and information. More than 1,000 chemicals have been researched and organized into a reference handbook for fire specialists, chemical handling specialists, and plant safety engineers. The specific information provided for chemicals includes the flammability characteristics, recommended fire extinguishing practices, fire extinguishing agents not to be used, behavior in fires, burning characteristics, chemical reactivity with regard to water and common materials, incompatible chemical mixtures, containment and neutralization methods for spills. This reference book has been designed as a data bank for the hazardous materials handling specialist and industrial safety managers dealing with large chemical inventories. It is intended to be used by fire and loss prevention specialists and as a basis for developing procedures for safe storing and handling of chemicals. The authors have included an extensive physical properties section on chemicals, with information most pertinent to fire response situations.

Book Prevention of Hazardous Fires and Explosions

Download or read book Prevention of Hazardous Fires and Explosions written by V.E. Zarko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides its obvious destructive potential, military R&D also serves to protect human lives, equipment and facilities against the effects of weapons. Concepts have therefore been developed that improve safety of stationary and mobile facilities against pressure waves, thermal radiation and fire. Effective, fast fire extinguishing equipment has been designed for tank compartments and motors. Closed buildings are demolished and landmines are removed with gas and dust explosions. Stringent safety requirements have been developed for the production of ammunition and explosives. Military and related industries have accumulated a vast knowledge and sophisticated experience that are very valuable in a variety of civil applications. The knowledge is based on theoretical and experimental research work, the origin of which sometimes dates back many centuries. It has often been classified and therefore has remained unknown to the civilian population, until now.

Book Fire Hazards in Industry

Download or read book Fire Hazards in Industry written by Norman Thomson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-12-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant loss to business occurs through fires in the workplace. Whether large or small, fire causes personal suffering, damage to plant, equipment and buildings, and loss of business. Fire legislation has changed over the past few years, especially with the introduction of European Directives. New regulations mean that employers have to carry out fire risk assessment and then, as a result of their findings, put in place control measures to prevent loss of life. Fire Hazards in Industry has been designed to cover, in general terms, exactly what is required of employers. It is written in simple language and considers the basics of good fire safety management. After reading Fire Hazards in Industry, any employer, safety professional or fire safety officer should be able to install a system for carrying out fire risk assessment. In addition to sections relating to the legal aspects of fire prevention, the book explains the concepts of fire modelling, explosions and combustion reactions. There is also a section relating to common industry fire hazards and hazards associated with electrical equipment. Knowledge of all these topics would be required if a person were to attempt to carry out fire risk assessment. Throughout the book, past case histories are used to illustrate certain aspects of fire and the causes of fire. The cases used have all been published by the Health and Safety Executive as a result of their investigations. These include; Abbeystead, Frodingham steelworks, HMS Glasgow, BP Grangemouth and many more. This book will be equally relevant to motor manufacturing as it is to the chemical industry. There are many case studies included that deal with fire hazards that are found in general industry.Fire Hazards in Industry is suitable for those who have relatively limited experience in fire safety and therefore use it as part of their career and educational development, but also can be used as reference material for those experienced professionals who have fire safety included in their day to day responsibility.
