Book The Hanoverian Dimension in British History 1714 1837

Download or read book The Hanoverian Dimension in British History 1714 1837 written by Brendan Simms and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-08 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 120 years (1714-1837) Great Britain was linked to the German Electorate, later Kingdom, of Hanover through Personal Union. This made Britain a continental European state in many respects, and diluted her sense of insular apartness. The geopolitical focus of Britain was now as much on Germany, on the Elbe and the Weser as it was on the Channel or overseas. At the same time, the Hanoverian connection was a major and highly controversial factor in British high politics and popular political debate. This volume was the first systematically to explore the subject by a team of experts drawn from the UK, US and Germany. They integrate the burgeoning specialist literature on aspects of the Personal Union into the broader history of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. Never before had the impact of the Hanoverian connection on British politics, monarchy and the public sphere, been so thoroughly investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural and social history of art collecting, art history, and the art market In The Rare Art Traditions, Joseph Alsop offers a wide-ranging cultural and social history of art collecting, art history, and the art market. He argues that art collecting is the basic element in a remarkably complex and historically rare behavioral system, which includes the historical study of art, the market for buying and selling art, museums, forgery, and the astonishing prices commanded by some works of art. The Rare Art Traditions tells the story of three important traditions of art collecting: the classical tradition that began in Greece, the Chinese tradition, and the Western tradition. The result is a major original contribution to art history.

Book Bruegel to Rubens

  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Bruegel to Rubens written by Desmond Shawe-Taylor and published by Royal Collection Trust. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is familiar with the Golden Age of Dutch art; this is an opportunity to explore its no less glorious Flemish counterpart. It is said that much of the greatest art is produced during periods of strife. In the mid-16th century, Flanders - the United Provinces in the north (modern Holland) and the Spanish Netherlands in the south (modern Belgium) - was the most sophisticated society in Europe, but its learning and luxury industries were all but annihilated by the so-called Dutch Revolt and by the Eighty Years War that followed (1568-1648). Two-thirds of the works discussed here were painted during this turbulent period, including Pieter Bruegel's ' Massacre of the Innocents of 1567 .' During the Renaissance the Low Countries attained a flawless technique of painting and the highest standards of craftsmanship. This tradition survived during even the worst years of the war.

Book excerpt: What is space? This fascinating journey of exploration begins in our own minds - the space within our brains. We discover how space is used in sign language and in architecture, before moving on to the virtual space created in an imaginary computer-generated world. The delineation of space has been important throughout human history, and we look at how boundaries have been mapped in the past, and how they remain politically important today. Finally, we travel into outer space, to look at human exploration and the ultimate nature of space and the universe.

Book Princes and Artists

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper
  • Publisher : HarperCollins Publishers
  • Release : 1976
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Princes and Artists written by Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper and published by HarperCollins Publishers. This book was released on 1976 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The relationship between artists and their patrons has always been a complex and fascinating one. In the case of the Habsburg rules of the sixteenth and seventh centuries, this is especially true, not only because those rulers are themselves of intrinsic interest, but because the artists whom they encouraged or employed - Durer, Titian, El Grego, Rubens - were among the greatest of all times. In Princes and Artists Professor Trevor-Roper explores the relationship between art and patronage through the careers of the Emperor Charles V (1500-58), his son Philip II of Spain (1527-98), the Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612) and 'the arch-dukes" - Albert and Isabella - who ruled the southern Netherlands from 1598 to 1633. In the context of their personal lives, their several courts, their political activities, and the ideological conflicts of the era, art played an immensely important role - partly as propaganda, partly for the sheer aesthetic pleasure it gave. The author argues that the distinctive characteristics of patronage in this period, which spanned the transition from the High Renaissance to the Baroque in art, from the Reformation to the Counter-Reformation in ideology, are to be explained by the 'world picture' of the age: "Art symbolised a whole view of life, of which politics were a part, and which the court had a duty to advertise and sustain." -- Book jacket.
