Book The Juggler and the Magic Harp

Download or read book The Juggler and the Magic Harp written by Robert Collins and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ragged man visits the houses of the nobility. He entered O'Donnel's house unknown and asked the musicians to play for him. Then he took the harp from them and played far superior music with the harp between his feet, and he played the music with his toes. He insulted O'Donnell and was surrounded by armed men, but he made some of the armed men assume his features, and they were attacked and killed. He restored them to life by getting the doorkeeper to rub their upper palates with an herb. The beggar headed off to the earl's house, went to bed, and began snoring heavily. When he met the household, he was given a book that was turned upside down and began reading it. He began playing chess with some of the best chess players in the area and beat them with only half of the pieces on the board. The juggler plays various tricks on the household. He then moves onto the lawn and opens his bag. He throws a rope into the sky. A cat and mouse appear from the bag and race up the rope. The mouse rides on the cat's back while the cat tries to unseat it. A hound and hare are released and race up the rope with the hare on the hound's back. The hound fails to dislodge the hare. The boy then goes up the rope but fails to carry out the juggler's instructions. He is restored to life by the juggler who departs.

Book The Dagda s Harp

Download or read book The Dagda s Harp written by Sharan Newman and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharan Newman’s acclaimed first novel, The Dagda’s Harp, written for young adults, is a fresh and beautiful interpretation of the classic Irish myth. Upon its publication in 1976, the Philadelphia Children’s Reading Round Table selected it as its Book of the Month. This is the story of Michael, a young Druid apprentice and his quest for a lost harp which will save his homeland, Ierne, from conquest by the evil Formorians. Michael’s childhood friend, Shana, is of the immortal race of Tuatha, sworn enemies of the Formorians. They are guided by Broga, a tiny, pipe playing Lipricanni, to a strange and mysterious lake where they meet the boastful centurion, Colinus. At the home of Michael’s warrior father, they meet Patrik, an educated Christian slave, who will help them look for the harp. They encounter many strange enchantments on their journey, including the fearsome Maebdh, queen of the Formorians and Michael’s stepmother. But it is at the great battle of Magh Tuiregh that the group discovers the true power of the Dagda’s Harp and the heroism that is necessary for good to triumph over evil. PRAISE: “The Author has created her lusty romance on ancient Irish legends. It’s an artful evocation of times when magic-benign and baneful- was taken for granted. The lad Michael is a reluctant druid apprentice. But he’s urged into derring-do when the plight of Shana and her mother are revealed to him. They had been taken in by Michael’s people by order of the chief Druid, Proinsas, when they had fled from the wicked Formorians. Proisnas now asks for Michael’s help, a quest for Shana’s uncle and the mysterious, supernatural harp of Dagda, ruler of the underworld. The young man literally goes through fire to save his people and his honor. It would be hard to find a more pleasurable way to spend a couple of hours than in the company of the romantic characters celebrated in Sharan Newman’s story. (12 and up)” —Publishers Weekly “Her well planned structure, fully drawn characters and suspenseful narrative become a colorful cornucopia bursting with the unpicked fruit of Gaelic mythology…Ms. Newman’s story can be enjoyed equally by parents and their young alike, especially if they are of Irish descent and want to understand Ireland’s cultural legacy. This book really excited me.” —Eleanor Eby, The Philadelphia Inquirer “Newman has faceted a well paced story with more dialogue, which will appeal to children not as versed in the fantasy realms.” —Booklist

Book THE HIGH DEEDS OF FINN AND OTHER BARDIC ROMANCES OF IRELAND

Download or read book THE HIGH DEEDS OF FINN AND OTHER BARDIC ROMANCES OF IRELAND written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein you will find 20 tales, from the Emerald Isle. There are seven bardic romances like, The Children of Lir, The Secret Of Labra, The Vengeance Of Mesgedra and five more besides. Also contained herein are thirteen legends, each a tale in itself, tracing the life of Finn mac Cumhal from boyhood through adulthood including the The Birth Of Oisín and his Visit To The Land Of Youth only to return to find that his father, Finn, had fallen at the battle of Brea three hundred years before. Lastly, The History Of King Cormac is recounted from the time of his birth, his judgement, marriage, disappearance and his death. The 16 Georgian style, color plates by Stephen Reid (1873 – 1948) portray scenes from these tales and are exquisite and sumptuous in their color and detail. The two most conspicuous figures in ancient Irish legend are Cuchulain, who lived in the reign of Conor mac Nessa immediately before the Christian era, and Finn son of Cumhal, who appears in literature as the captain of a military order devoted to the service of the High King of Ireland during the 3rd century. As such, this volume is mainly concerned with the exploits of Fin mac Cumhal and the Fianna of Erinn. The romantic tales retold here belong neither to the category of folk-lore nor of myth, although most contain elements of both. They belong to the bardic literature of ancient Ireland, a literature written with an artistic purpose by men who possessed in the highest degree the native culture of their land and time. Once again, you’re invited to curl up with a unique piece of ancient Irish folklore and let the Gift of the Irish enchant and captivate you. This volume has not been seen in print for over one hundred years—don’t miss this golden opportunity.

Book Ancient Elder Gods and Irish Myths

Download or read book Ancient Elder Gods and Irish Myths written by A.J. Carmichael and published by AJ CARMICHAEL. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celtic mythology is a rich and intricate diverse world, a captivating realm where deities and humans interact amidst mystical environments and celestial conflicts. Rooted predominantly in the ancient cultures of Ireland and Wales, this mythology serves as a compendium of stories, a cultural and spiritual mirror reflecting the Celtic people's values, traditions, and laws. By delving into the extensive range of Celtic myths, particularly the mythological, Ulster, and Fenian cycles in Ireland and the Mabinogion in Wales, we can uncover the profound influence these myths have had on European literary and cultural development. The primary method of transmitting these stories was oral, posing a significant challenge to studying Celtic myths. The religious perspectives of the scribes, particularly Christian monks, have left a significant imprint on these texts, but they remain crucial for our understanding. Irish literature draws from significant sources such as 'The Book of Invasions' and 'The Book of Leinster,' while Welsh literature relies on an important source known as 'Mabinogion.' Roman historians provide additional external narratives that contribute to understanding the Celts in a wider context of ancient European history. Unravelling these sources requires a nuanced approach to differentiate the authentic pagan elements from the Christian additions. The Celtic pantheon features diverse deities who govern various aspects of existence and the natural realm. In Irish mythology, the Dagda embodies paternal dominion and jurisdiction over the cycles of life and death, whereas Morrigan signifies the supremacy and inevitability of warfare. According to Welsh mythology, Arawn is the sovereign of the Otherworld, and Bran the Blessed is a colossal king with deep ties to the land and its well-being. The Celts' gods frequently engage with humans, often directly intervening in their destinies, highlighting the Celts' perception of the cosmos as a profoundly interconnected domain. The Mythological Cycle in Ireland narrates the tales of ancient deities and their conflicts, including the Tuatha Dé Danann, celestial beings who eventually assimilate into Irish civilisation as the forefathers of the contemporary Irish people after being conquered by the Milesians. The purpose of this cycle is twofold: to document Ireland's legendary history and to assert a divine entitlement to the land and its governance.
