Book An Idiot s Fugitive Essays on Science

Download or read book An Idiot s Fugitive Essays on Science written by C. Truesdell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, after the agreeable fatigues of solicitation, Mrs Millamant set out a long bill of conditions subject to which she might by degrees dwindle into a wife, Mirabell offered in return the condition that he might not thereby be beyond measure enlarged into a husband. With age and experience in research come the twin dangers of dwindling into a philosopher of science while being enlarged into a dotard. The philosophy of science, I believe, should not be the preserve of senile scientists and of teachers of philosophy who have themselves never so much as understood the contents of a textbook of theoretical physics, let alone done a bit of mathematical research or even enjoyed the confidence of a creating scientist. On the latter count I run no risk: Any reader will see that I am untrained (though not altogether unread) in classroom philosophy. Of no ignorance of mine do I boast, indeed I regret it, but neither do I find this one ignorance fatal here, for few indeed of the great philosophers to explicate whose works hodiernal professors of phil osophy destroy forests of pulp were themselves so broadly and specially trained as are their scholiasts. In attempt to palliate the former count I have chosen to collect works written over the past thirty years, some of them not published before, and I include only a few very recent essays.

Book Mechanics and Durability of Solids

Download or read book Mechanics and Durability of Solids written by Franz-Josef Ulm and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for a first course in continuum mechanics and constitutive modeling at the senior undergraduate and the introductory graduate level, the focus of this book is on a unified "mechanistic" approach that uses energy concepts for modeling a large range of engineering material behavior. In the presentation, 1D-Think models lead to the development of various fundamentals of continuum mechanics, such as deformation and strain, momentum balance, stress and stress states, thermoelasticity and elasticity bounds, plasticity, and yield design. Along these lines, the bases for a common language among core disciplines in engineering sciences are developed, in a mathematical, yet eloquent manner. The textbook evolved from lecture notes of a one-semester course developed by the authors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as in France, Germany, and Brazil. "Key Features of the Book" Parts I and II introduce the two pillars of continuum mechanics, strain and stresses, with a focus on geometrical and physical interpretation, starting with the finite deformation theory. Part III is dedicated to non-dissipative material behavior, with a focus on thermoelasticity and variational methods in elasticity, as well as to its application in heterogeneous material systems. Part IV starts with 1D-plasticity, introducing ideal plasticity, hardening plasticity, and associated energy transformations. It is within the energy approach that the 1D-Think models are extended to 3D, introducing the notion of associated and non-associated plasticity. Finally, the concept of plastic collapse is introduced, leading to the development of the upper- and lower-boundtheorems of limit analysis, which form the basis of modern yield design for engineering structures and material systems. The mathematical developments in each chapter are illustrated through a set of accompanying blackboard exercises of the subject matter, a Training Set for recitation, followed by a broad spectrum of worked exercises suitable for homework, classroom assignments, quizzes, or take-home examinations.

Book Constitutive Modelling of Solid Continua

Download or read book Constitutive Modelling of Solid Continua written by José Merodio and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of a collection of chapters by recognized experts to provide a comprehensive fundamental theoretical continuum treatment of constitutive laws used for modelling the mechanical and coupled-field properties of various types of solid materials. It covers the main types of solid material behaviour, including isotropic and anisotropic nonlinear elasticity, implicit theories, viscoelasticity, plasticity, electro- and magneto-mechanical interactions, growth, damage, thermomechanics, poroelasticity, composites and homogenization. The volume provides a general framework for research in a wide range of applications involving the deformation of solid materials. It will be of considerable benefit to both established and early career researchers concerned with fundamental theory in solid mechanics and its applications by collecting diverse material in a single volume. The readership ranges from beginning graduate students to senior researchers in academia and industry.

Book The Physics of Large Deformation of Crystalline Solids

Download or read book The Physics of Large Deformation of Crystalline Solids written by James F. Bell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, a major problem for the study of the large deformation of crystalline solids has been the apparent lack of unity in experimentally determined stress-strain functions. The writer's discovery in 1949 of the unexpectedly high velocity of incremental loading waves in pre-stressed large deformation fields emphasized to him the pressing need for the independent, systematic experimental study of the subject, to provide a firm foundation upon which physically plausible theories for the finite deformation of crystalline solids could be constructed. Such a study undertaken by the writer at that time and continued uninterruptedly to the present, led in 1956 to the development of the diffraction grating experiment which permitted, for the first time, the optically accurate determination of the strain-time detail of non-linear finite amplitude wave fronts propagating into crystalline solids whose prior history was precisely known. These experimental diffraction grating studies during the past decade have led to the discovery that the uniaxial stress-strain functions of 27 crystalline solids are unified in a single, generalized stress-strain function which is described, much of it hitherto unpublished, in the present monograph. The detailed study of over 2,000 polycrystal and single crystal uni axial stress experiments in 27 crystalline solids, in terms of the variation of a large number of pertinent parameters, has provided new unified pat terns of understanding which, it is hoped, will be of interest and value to theorists and experimentalists alike.

Book Finite Elasticity And Viscoelasticity A Course In The Nonlinear Mechanics Of Solids

Download or read book Finite Elasticity And Viscoelasticity A Course In The Nonlinear Mechanics Of Solids written by Aleksey Drozdov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-01-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a systematic and self-consistent introduction to the nonlinear continuum mechanics of solids, from the main axioms to comprehensive aspects of the theory. The objective is to expose the most intriguing aspects of elasticity and viscoelasticity with finite strains in such a way as to ensure mathematical correctness, on the one hand, and to demonstrate a wide spectrum of physical phenomena typical only of nonlinear mechanics, on the other.A novel aspect of the book is that it contains a number of examples illustrating surprising behaviour in materials with finite strains, as well as comparisons between theoretical predictions and experimental data for rubber-like polymers and elastomers. The book aims to fill a gap between mathematicians specializing in nonlinear continuum mechanics, and physicists and engineers who apply the methods of solid mechanics to a wide range of problems in civil and mechanical engineering, materials science, and polymer physics. The book has been developed from a graduate course in applied mathematics which the author has given for a number of years.
