Book excerpt: Two gut-wrenching cases draw Cass into mortal danger In her many years as a defense attorney, Cass Jameson has represented every kind of client—male and female, good and evil, rich and poor. But rarely has she gotten the chance to work for the most unusual client of all: the innocent one. She comes to the second appellate court on behalf of one of these rare blameless victims, Keith Jernigan, to argue that corrupt police work convicted him of a robbery he did not commit. But when she learns that Keith is guilty of something far uglier, she realizes she has been fighting to keep an evil man on the streets—and putting his girlfriend in danger. While she tries to keep Keith’s girlfriend safe, Cass takes a divorce case on behalf of a brilliant photographer whose husband has been abusing her for years. The divorce turns bloody, and it will take every ounce of Cass’s strength to keep these two situations from becoming twin tragedies.

Book The Void and the Metaphors

Download or read book The Void and the Metaphors written by Yasunori Sugimura and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to revise the traditional interpretation of William Golding's fiction. The author investigates Golding's complicated metaphors which fluctuate so widely as to make consistent readings almost impossible. The study reveals that these fluctuating metaphors are created around a void, which is depicted not only as a gap but also as an impenetrable dark spot, or a counter-gaze. The characters in Golding's fiction endeavour to symbolise the void, but it ultimately resists symbolisation. Mainly from the perspective of semiotics, psychoanalysis, and philosophy, the book looks at the way in which the elements excluded from the symbolic system react against it and leave this void. The author then focuses on the void's significance in the creation of unique metaphors.

Book excerpt: Detours are amazing creatures. A detour can shortcut your existence or it can lead you down a forever long road that will linger far into the distant reaches of eternity. It is these unexpected tangents that people stumble across nearly every day that will haunt you in a frighteningly familiar fashion. Wander into a laundromat and find a kind of a time machine. Indulge yourself in a particularly nasty game of baseball. Hitch a ride on a freight train with the piggyback man or entomb yourself in a trailer walled with books or take a ride on a bus that is going nowhere fast or just lean over an empty ocean and wait for the very first mermaid you see. Detour around an overturned trailer of chickens and find a chance to do it all over again. Take a taxi ride with a very hungry passenger or just walk in the park and watch a juggler balancing severed heads. Reality will take you only so far and after that there is nothing to rely on but faith and fear. I offer you eighteen eerie tales of fantasy, horror, science fiction and all around strangeness that will take you to the edge of the map and then nudge you just a little bit further. "If Harlan Ellison, Richard Matheson and Robert Bloch had a three-way sex romp in a hot tub, and then a team of scientists came in and filtered out the water and mixed the leftover DNA into a test tube, the resulting genetic experiment would most likely grow up into Steve Vernon." – Bookgasm
