Broker in So Cal with a real estate market in full bloom, life for Charles is as smooth as the purr of his BMW, Blackie. A man whose life, like his service, crowds the line, Charles is in the habit of taking what life serves. Deep in debt to a bookie whose husband is a debt collector with a pro lineman physique, Charles is sanguine. Accused of cheating at tennis by his world famous sparring partner, he is placid. Bribed to act as shill in high-stakes racetrack grift, he is serene. But all that was before Henrietta? Now all he can think of is her?the look of her, the feel of her, the sound of her mangled English?and for the first time in a very long time?the future. But his Frenchfry is not all Charles has to worry about. There is her special forces lover, Roadrunner, shadowing their every rendezvous. And now, just as Charles has begun to contemplate tomorrow he must entertain the possibility that, if Roadrunner has his way, he won?t have one.True as only fiction can be, Henrietta is more than picaresque farce, more than diary of failed love, more than tour of pro tennis, more than morality play?it is a window on a man's soul. And, for his myriad faults, Charles Killpatrick is a man worth knowing. Bounder, romantic, ne?er do well, visionary, man of honor?when Charles joins battle with fate the score is love all, and the results unpredictable as the course of a 100 mph Penn spun off the racket of a pro.

He falls in love with Charley, a pretty emergency physician. She helps resuscitate his Dad who succumbs to high altitude mountain sickness in Dingboche, Nepal. By luck a working group who has spent the summer and fall cleaning the trash from the base camp of Mount Everest is camped a few hundred yards from Jim's trekking party when his Dad goes into high altitude cerebral edema. Their Gamow hyperbaric bag is successful in resuscitating his Dad out of coma, but unfortunately Alex slips back into coma. Good fortune smiles again when a French physician from the High Altitude Mountain Rescue clinic in Pheriche arrives with her Jacque Cousteau designed hyperbaric chamber that will pressure the victim down to sea level. An injection of Niphedapine under Alex's tongue and a dive in the Cousteau bag brings Alex out of his coma once again. Alex survives a trip to a lower altitude on a makeshift stretcher with oxygen flowing, but is in poor condition. Only a daring helicopter rescue offers any hope, but leaves Jim wondering about the fate of his Dad. The rest of the trekking party marches up the trail and eventually five members summit Kala Patthar, but not without another high altitude sickness casualty. Meanwhile, Jim hurries down the mountain only to have to wait in Lukla for a flight back to Kathmandu. Alex recovers unbeknownst to Jim and sight sees around Kathmandu. Charley transports the other coma patient by rescue helicopter, but never quite hooks up with Jim. Jim finally meets his Dad and they recount the events that nearly melted their wings.

Book excerpt: The Tales of the Serendip take place in a virtual pub that exists only in the minds of the fantasy writers who crafted the Tales of the Serendip. It’s a place where, given a few rules and a common backdrop, writers can create small vignettes to explore new story lines, break writer’s block, or experiment with new characters. Plus it helps to keep them all out of the psychiatric ward. Where else would you go to sip fine Akuvian cinnamon wine and have a heart-to-heart with one of your more troubling characters? Or maybe you choose to sit in the Writer's Nook discussing magic spells and comma usage with other writers while slugging down mugs of Korone Dwarven Dark Ale. Bar fights, bad puns, a bouncer named Grendel (yes, The Grendel), and a bartender who can dispense advice and drinks simultaneously, all exist inside this fabulous place. The Tales of the Serendip will bring you inside to see the fabulous writing treasures fueled by the collective imaginations of people who are destined to become tomorrow’s Asimovs, Heinleins and Le Guins.

Be careful who you let in. Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am. She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them. Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone. In The Family Upstairs, the master of “bone-chilling suspense” (People) brings us the can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.
