Book excerpt: Research on multi-tiered, research-based reading interventions provides strong evidence for the critical role of early reading instruction and the benefits of early intervention for children who are struggling to learn to read (Blachman et al., 2004; Denton, Fletcher, Anthony, & Francis, 2006). Research on effective approaches for older students who have already experienced reading failure is less prevalent (Kamil et al., 2008). In particular, there are few experimental studies documenting the effects of multi-tiered approaches to improving instructional outcomes in reading for students in the middle grades. To address this need, the authors have engaged a series of NIH-funded randomized studies on the effects of multi-tiered interventions for students with reading disabilities in grades six through eight. This poster presents selected findings from that ongoing work. It extends previously reported research by addressing the question: "What are the effects of an intensive, small group, tutoring treatment in reading on the reading outcomes of students with significant reading disabilities who had little to no response to two previous years of intensive intervention?" At a time of reduced public spending it is important that proposed interventions are both effective and efficient. Overcoming Disadvantage in Education is unique in the way that it: Shows where the solutions to underachievement and poverty lie combines primary(new), secondary (official) and published (review) evidence distinguishes between those possible causes of underachievement that are largely fixed for individuals, and those that are modifiable. There are evidence-informed ways forward in handling under-achievement and increasing social justice in education. This book shows which the more likely approaches are, and where further work could yield further benefits. Book excerpt: Response-to-intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered intervention process designed in part to identify students with specific learning disabilities ([SLD], Vaughn & Fuchs, 2003). The RTI is also designed to assist struggling readers as they access the general education curriculum. This research effort utilized a pre-test/post-test design to determine the effectiveness of RTI when implemented with struggling readers in middle school. The implementation of evidence-based intensive reading instruction was compared with the implementation of traditional 6th grade instruction. Participants in the research were 56, 6th grade students who scored “Far Below Basic” or “Below Basic” on the 2006-2007 English Language Arts (ELA) California Standards Test (CST) and who scored at 3rd grade level or below on four curriculum-based measurements (CBM). Over 25 different languages are spoken at the school site used in this research, and nearly all of the students are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). The sample included 61% Latinos, 30% African American, and 9% Indochinese. Of which, 86% were English Learners (ELs) and 20% of students had specific learning disabilities (SLD). The control group (n = 28) was provided with 6th grade traditional classroom instruction only, with no additional assistance. The intervention group (n = 28) received approximately 30 hours of intense reading instruction in 1:3 teacher-student homogeneous groups. Participants received intervention for one hour (three, 20-minute intervals), three times a week, for 10 weeks, using three out of four scientifically validated reading programs. The research design utilized both descriptive and inferential statistics to measure the effectiveness of interventions using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) on students' reading scores, overall grade point average, and the effect on students' 2007-2008 ELA CST scores. This study also examined the nature of Tier 1 and Tier 2 learning environments and instruction as they relate to students' language and learning differences. Observations were conducted, followed by interviews with the participating teachers (n = 3) and interventionists (n = 3). The results from this mixed-methods study informs educators about the effects of evidence-based Tier 2 interventions and clarifies the nature of Tier 1 and Tier 2 responsive instruction for diverse student populations.

The setting for this study was a rural 6-8 middle school in the southeastern United States. Seven sixth grade struggling readers on Tier 2 or Tier 3 of RTI who were enrolled in the reading remediation class scheduled during one of the students' elective periods participated in the study. Data sources included observations, semi-structured interviews, and artifacts such as progress reports, work samples, and RTI notes and progress monitoring data. Cross-case data analysis focused on the perceptions the participants had of their reading abilities and the instruction they were receiving. Findings revealed that struggling adolescent readers (a) had identified themselves as struggling readers, (b) wanted to become better readers, and (c) trusted their teachers to foster their literacy growth. However, the current implementation of the problem-solving model of RTI at this level did not promote positive reading identities for these students or their proficiency in reading."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
