Download or read book The Divine Imprint written by Russell Stannard and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called New Atheists receive much publicity, but their demand to be provided with incontrovertible evidence for the existence of God, and that such evidence must come from a scientific examination of the physical world, is the wrong approach. As many theologians and philosophers have claimed, the search for God begins by looking inwards into oneself. But what does that mean? Surely looking inwards we find nothing but the contents of one’s own mind. Where does God come in? It is by the examination of the contents of the mind and trying to understand how they got there that one seeks clues about God’s influence on the mind. Our consciousness bears a resemblance to that Consciousness from which it is directly derived. It bears his imprint. It is from the characteristics of that imprint we get to know what kind of God we are dealing with. Only then can we be open to realizing how that other creation of his, the physical world, also bears his imprint.

Book excerpt: "It is a reality that this path called the Fourth Way Work can fundamentally change the kind of person you are. What you can become is free from the tyranny of external life and of the false self. Your new developed level of understanding gives you the peace that passes understanding. Your new level of Being means you are no longer controlled by self-love and you will know what your purpose is for being born into life on this planet...The Fourth Way Work is not a religious path. It predates and transcends all religions, traditions and their practices and is always the same teaching about a human being's possible evolution through the development of consciousness as taught in the Fourth Way Work of inner purification." Download or read book Fingerprints of God written by Barbara Bradley Hagerty and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles about research on spirituality and the brain are usually written from the point of view that religious experience can be understood from a purely scientific perspective. Hagerty's (religion correspondent, NPR) book does not have this naturalistic or materialistic tendency. Rather, as both a reporter and a religious person, she seeks insight on spirituality and science while being open to the possibility that spirituality may still have a transcendent component. The book is interesting to read because the author has interviewed many scientists as well as many people who attest to having mystical or near-death experiences. In a way, the reader feels like a participant in Hagerty's own encounter with the various pieces of information and evidence, struggling with her to make sense of it all. Download or read book The Mind and Philosophy of Man in His Search for the Divine written by I. G. Soorma and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be human? Does this search for identity take us only inwardinto investigations about the nature of our minds and our ways of thinkingor does it tend to draw any willing seeker beyond himself, perhaps to spirituality, to religion, or to deep reflections on the divine? In The Mind and Philosophy of Man in His Search for the Divine, author I. G. Soorma explores religious themes and traditions from around the world as he dwells on the identity, journey, and ultimate destination of humankind. As a cross-cultural approach to philosophy and religion, it encourages us to think critically and introspectively as we engage in like discussions with others. The Mind and Philosophy of Man in His Search for the Divine is a highly original survey of great ideas from the classics, and it places mystical and Islamic and Sufist works as equals alongside the traditional European and East Asian canon. Soorma references and comments on the great masterpieces of philosophy, religion, nature, art, and psychologythe Bible and the Quran, Rumi and Shakespeare, Goethe and Hafez, and Confucius and Platoas he asks us to embrace the challenging ideas and notions that are shared across these supposedly disparate works. Placing these great works in a dialogue with each other creates a lively discussion which will stimulate the seeker of knowledge to come to his or her own understanding of life, the universe, and human destiny. Such an invigorating elixir is particularly welcome in a technological age in which intense, prolonged reading has become a less crucial element in the formation of ones understanding of the worldand in which specialization has supplanted broad general education and thoughtful reflection.

Download or read book Searching for the Divine in Plato and Aristotle written by Julie K. Ward and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To scholars of ancient philosophy, theoria denotes abstract thinking, with both Plato and Aristotle employing the term to signify philosophical contemplation. Yet it is surprising for some to find an earlier, traditional meaning referring to travel to festivals and shrines. In an attempt to dissolve the problem of equivocal reference, Julie Ward's book seeks to illuminate the nature of traditional theoria as ancient festival-attendance as well as the philosophical account developed in Plato and Aristotle. First, she examines the traditional use referring to periodic festivals, including their complex social and political arrangements, then she considers the subsequent use by Plato and Aristotle. Broadly speaking, she discerns a common thread running throughout both uses: namely, the notion of having a visual experience of the sacred or divine. Thus her book aims to illuminate the nature of philosophical theoria described by Plato and Aristotle in light of traditional, festival theoria.
