Book Finding Ourselves at the Movies

Download or read book Finding Ourselves at the Movies written by Paul W. Kahn and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic philosophy may have lost its audience, but the traditional subjects of philosophy—love, death, justice, knowledge, and faith—remain as compelling as ever. To reach a new generation, Paul W. Kahn argues that philosophy must take up these fundamental concerns as we find them in contemporary culture. He demonstrates how this can be achieved through a turn to popular film. Discussing such well-known movies as Forrest Gump (1994), The American President (1995), The Matrix (1999), Memento (2000), The History of Violence (2005), Gran Torino (2008), The Dark Knight (2008), The Road (2009), and Avatar (2009), Kahn explores powerful archetypes and their hold on us. His inquiry proceeds in two parts. First, he uses film to explore the nature of action and interpretation, arguing that narrative is the critical concept for understanding both. Second, he explores the narratives of politics, family, and faith as they appear in popular films. Engaging with genres as diverse as romantic comedy, slasher film, and pornography, Kahn explores the social imaginary through which we create and maintain a meaningful world. He finds in popular films a new setting for a philosophical inquiry into the timeless themes of sacrifice, innocence, rebirth, law, and love.

Book Losing Your Parents Finding Yourself

Download or read book Losing Your Parents Finding Yourself written by Victoria Secunda and published by Hyperion. This book was released on 2001-04-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eloquent book that explores the impact on one's life of losing a parent as an adult, and the effect it has on families, careers, and friendships -- now in paperback. Losing a parent is an event that happens, sooner or later, to nearly everyone. Yet seldom has the impact of parental death on the identities of adult offspring been examined. This book fills that gap. Backed by her original study and filled with compelling case histories, Secunda's book explores what happens to men and women when they are on their own in ways they have never been before. She addresses myriad issues, including: What does it mean to be living without parents to please or rebel against? How does adult "orphanhood" alter relationships with one's siblings, partner, friends, children, or one's career choices? How does it reshape one's sense of self? Losing Your Parents, Finding Your Self offers the assurance that out of loss can come unforeseen gain -- that on the other side of sorrow, we can discover new hope, wisdom, and strength.

Book excerpt: On Christmas Day, 6-year-old Randolph runs into the family room and cries, "Daddy!" Two men - William and Cyrus - answer his call. In his quest to unravel the mystery of two fathers, which leads to a reunion with his birth mother and the exposure of grim secrets William tried to bury half a century ago, Randolph rediscovers himself. Thirty-three years after that ominous Christmas Day, as William tries to atone from his deathbed for a lifetime of deceit, Randolph realizes that he has solved a far greater question: Does God exist? The practical implications of his answer will astonish you. Where We Find Ourselves is a true story, told by one of those rare individuals in whom the old world and the new coalesce. In this tale of betrayal and liberation, R. Thomas Risk enlists the analytical skills of a lawyer, the savvy of an investigator and the eloquence of an award-winning poet to forever change your perception of society's sacred institutions - the three most insidious of which are Religion, Celebrity and National Politics ... a positively unholy trinity.

Book Where We Find Ourselves

Download or read book Where We Find Ourselves written by Margaret Sartor and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-taught photographer Hugh Mangum was born in 1877 in Durham, North Carolina, as its burgeoning tobacco economy put the frontier-like boomtown on the map. As an itinerant portraitist working primarily in North Carolina and Virginia during the rise of Jim Crow, Mangum welcomed into his temporary studios a clientele that was both racially and economically diverse. After his death in 1922, his glass plate negatives remained stored in his darkroom, a tobacco barn, for fifty years. Slated for demolition in the 1970s, the barn was saved at the last moment--and with it, this surprising and unparalleled document of life at the turn of the twentieth century, a turbulent time in the history of the American South. Hugh Mangum's multiple-image, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio to show us lives marked both by notable affluence and hard work, all imbued with a strong sense of individuality, self-creation, and often joy. Seen and experienced in the present, the portraits hint at unexpected relationships and histories and also confirm how historical photographs have the power to subvert familiar narratives. Mangum's photographs are not only images; they are objects that have survived a history of their own and exist within the larger political and cultural history of the American South, demonstrating the unpredictable alchemy that often characterizes the best art--its ability over time to evolve with and absorb life and meaning beyond the intentions or expectations of the artist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book wrestles with quandaries of pastoral ministry in what psychotherapist Mary Pipher calls “the age of overwhelm.” Drawing especially from the wisdom of Jesus’ own teaching and healing ministries as portrayed in the Gospel of Luke, it offers an intimate narrative introduction to pastoral theology for guiding bewildering tasks of pastoral care and counseling. These essays encourage seminarians and ministers to embrace their role as agents of healing by exploring their own debilitating shame and daring to speak what in childhood could not be spoken; by revealing their discoveries to a trusted confidant so as to feel less loathsome or lonely; by attending to even minute individual differences, in self and others, that fuel social isolation; and by believing in those persons who first believed in them.

Over a period of five years, Judi Turkheimer rode a roller coaster of strong emotion as she breathed in the very real possibility of losing her daughter. There were many days fraught with fear, hopelessness, and anguish. As Judi began to do the hard work of healing, feelings of joy and hope started to come out from the shadows. Through lies and loss, denial and disgust, rehab and relapse, and finally awareness and acceptance, Judi learned that unconditionally loving her daughter necessitated not only tough love, but also self-love. Without loving herself, she knew she was of no use to anyone else. Intended to validate, support, and encourage, Finding Myself in a Nightmare is a story of triumphs, mistakes, pain, discovery, and trust. As Judi takes us into her home and heart, we learn about her biases, her resistance, and her ignorance. Willing to do what was needed to help her child, Judi invites us to accompany her on the journey. Eventually concluding she would be alright, whatever the outcome for her daughter, Judi offers the tips and tools that kept her from going insane. Reminding herself to be grateful, set boundaries, take small steps, and be present in the moment became a full-time job. Finding Myself in a Nightmare is a book about loving an addict, helping an addict, and the search for strength and unconditional love at a soul level. If you love an addict, this book is for you. If you struggle to find love of self, this book is for you. If you want to learn to love unconditionally, this book is for you.

Book Finding Yourself and Accepting the Person You Find

Download or read book Finding Yourself and Accepting the Person You Find written by Sharon Rampersad and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth of the matter is that 95% of the time, people tell you what you want to hear. I wanted to produce something unique and that other women could use to get to know themselves on a deeper level based on my own inner reflections that I know are common to many. This book is like having coffee with your best friend. And hearing things few people have the ability to say. It is easy to read and digest, written in a way that any reader can relate to. It’s more like having a conversation than reading a book. There is something for everyone who reads it with an open mind. I went through every experience without a partner, but I had my family and friends. I had to teach myself to stop thinking in lack, and start appreciating the things that were present in my life every day. We often overlook the great things about our lives because we fixate on one area. I trained my mind to identify the difference between a need and a want. The person we need to love first, is ourselves because this is the only person we can control. The intentions of this book are to offer a beacon to those who are stumbling around in the dark, trying to find their way. To offer some consolation to other women, because we often go through the same things, so there is no need to beat yourself up. To give some direction to the negative energies most people carry around because they feel obligated to hold on to that pain. Why wait till tomorrow to start being the person you want to be today.
