Book Finding Faith A Search for What Is Real

Download or read book Finding Faith A Search for What Is Real written by Brian D. McLaren and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been times when you've felt that if there isn't a God, there ought to be. Swept up in the mystery of the night sky, you've felt the closeness of its designer. Nature's extravagant diversity, unfolding in living color, has made you long to know the artist who dreamed it all up. Imagine what that might be like--to actually know God in a way that fills your heart and whispers tremendous value and purpose to something deep within you. But how can you experience a being you're not even sure exists? Religious jargon and games can't satisfy such a longing. It's got to be real . . . or nothing at all. A Search for What Is Real helps you sort through the questions, objections, and concerns that arise when you consider God not as some theological abstraction, but as someone you can actually connect with . . . and want to connect with, perhaps more than you know. FINDING FAITH The Finding Faith books, A Search for What Makes Sense and A Search for What Is Real, don't try to tell you what to believe; they are guides in learning how to believe. If you think the spiritual journey requires turning your back on honesty and intellectual integrity, these two companion volumes will speak to both your mind and your soul.

Book excerpt: Is there a God? - What might God be like? - What is the relationship between faith and certainty? - Can intelligent people believe in spiritual realities? - Why are there so many religions? - Is it possible to experience a relationship with God--and if so, how? If you've asked questions like these, you're in good company. From songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Jewel Kilcher to TV shows such as The X Files and Touched by an Angel, the media and the arts reflect postmodern men and women's search for a living faith and a spiritually oriented life. Real faith isn't blind believism. It is a process that engages your intellect as well as your emotions. If you think faith requires turning your back on truth and intellectual honesty, then Finding Faith is one book you really ought to read. With logic, passion, and even-handedness that the thinking person will appreciate, this book helps you face your obstacles to faith by focusing not on what to believe, but on how to believe. Whether you want to strengthen the faith you have, renew the faith you lost, or discover faith for the first time, Finding Faith can coach, inspire, encourage, and guide you, and help you discover more in life than you'd ever imagined or hoped for.

Book Finding Faith A Search for What Makes Sense

Download or read book Finding Faith A Search for What Makes Sense written by Brian D. McLaren and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does having faith mean abandoning reason? It's easy to get that impression. Still, it seems reasonable that a supremely intelligent God would want you to use your God-given intellect on your spiritual journey as much as in any other aspect of your life. Faith may not stand on rational thinking alone, but a solid faith should walk hand in hand with intellectual integrity. Does it really matter what I believe? What is the relationship between faith and knowledge? Why are there so many religions? Do all paths lead to the same God? This book helps you sort through the questions, objections, and concerns you can't help but raise. A Search for What Makes Sense will help you think your way clearly and honestly to answers that satisfy because they're your answers--conclusions you've arrived at personally without manipulation, coercion, or game-playing. For faith to exist and grow it's got to make sense--good sense, carefully-thought-out sense. And chances are it does. FINDING FAITH The Finding Faith books A Search for What Makes Sense and A Search for What Is Real don't try to tell you what to believe; they are guides in learning how to believe. If you think the spiritual journey requires turning your back on honesty and intellectual integrity, these two companion volumes will speak to both your mind and your soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the masses still lining up to enter mega-churches with warehouse-like architecture, casually dressed clergy, and pop Christian music, the “Post-Boomer” generation—those ranging in age from twenty to forty—is having second thoughts. In this perceptive look at the evolving face of Christianity in contemporary culture, sociologists Richard Flory and Donald E. Miller argue that we are on the verge of another potential revolution in how Christians worship and associate with one another. Just as the formative experiences of Baby Boomers were colored by such things as the war in Vietnam, the 1960s, and a dramatic increase in their opportunities for individual expression, so Post-Boomers have grown up in less structured households with working (often divorced) parents. These childhood experiences leave them craving authentic spiritual experience, rather than entertainment, and also cause them to question institutions. Flory and Miller develop a typology that captures four current approaches to the Christian faith and argue that this generation represents a new religious orientation of “expressive communalism,” in which they seek spiritual experience and fulfillment in community and through various expressive forms of spirituality, both private and public.

Mandy Steward set out in pursuit of these what-ifs. She didn’t find answers so much as she discovered a messy grace that knows no limits and a God that was and is willing to thrash about with her no matter her questions or struggles or doubts. What she found was abundant life, but it didn’t look like she thought it was going to. It was far different, and much deeper. This is a book without “easy” answers that lets those struggling with faith and searching for more know they are not alone.

Book excerpt: For years now, Christmas has been the only merry part of Mary’s life, but that’s all about to change… When Mary’s mom walked out on them, her dad started drinking and never stopped. The one bright spot in her miserable childhood was a charity called Sub-for-Santa. It restored her faith in magic and brought hope and love into their home. She’s run the program as an adult for nearly a decade to bring the same joy to children all over Atlanta. When the same man’s name pops up both the donor and the recipient list, she’s a little frustrated. How can she figure out where he belongs without hurting his feelings? After making the trek out to his address, she’s prepared to mark down ‘recipient.’ It is a trailer park, after all. But when he answers the door, it’s the ridiculously handsome, polished man she met last week. He’s also the first man she’s agreed to go on a date with in more than a year. He definitely doesn’t need anyone to bring his children Christmas gifts—he travels for work, hence the trailer. But Mary made a vow to herself long ago that she would never have children. She didn’t want to risk being like her parents. She knows she needs to walk away—he has two beautiful children, after all. But Luke doesn’t make it easy. Can Mary find enough faith in herself to do something she never thought possible? "Despite the complexities [of] this tale, Finding Faith reads like the honeymoon stage of a relationship. It's filled with laughter, an idealized reality, and an endless craving for the story to continue. Luke's and Mary's love offers a temporary euphoria that shows romance is sometimes found where it is least expected." --Publisher's Weekly USA Today Bestselling author, Elana Johnson said, "Finding Faith is a heartwarming and brilliant story about love, loss, and learning what you really want." NYT Bestselling Author, Victorine E. Lieske said, "A fun romance! I highly enjoyed it. Bridget knows how to tug at your heartstrings. A fantastic read!" Book Chasing Proof Finding Faith

Download or read book Chasing Proof Finding Faith written by Tom Rudelius and published by Tyndale House Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-08 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He had science and an Ivy League pedigree—why did he need God? Immersed in his physics studies at Cornell, Tom Rudelius never thought much about God until his brother, a new convert to Christianity, challenged him to explore faith. To placate his twin, he reluctantly began exploring the Bible and the life of Jesus. Seeking proof of God’s existence, he found himself in a world of uncertainty, faced with plenty of reasons for both faith and doubt. In Chasing Proof, Finding Faith, Tom, now a rising young theoretical physicist, traces his journey to unexpected faith, through subsequent doubt and anxiety, and ultimately to a firmer, life-transforming allegiance to Jesus. Along the way, he explores some of the issues he wrestled with, including Creation and cosmic origins The problem of evil and suffering The compatibility of miracles with science and the plausibility of Jesus’ resurrection The reliability of the Bible While Tom never found absolute proof of God or Christianity, he ultimately concluded that the existing evidence for both is compelling and compatible with science. His searingly honest story is a potent guide for those doubting or exploring faith.

Book excerpt: This is a book about science, religion, and the world in between. I was born into a Christian family, but fell out of religion and in love with the scientific method. I had little need of faith, I thought, when science could tell me so much more about the world, and ask so little of me in return. But as I aged into young adulthood, a new chapter of my story began. Did I really know why I believed what I believed? How could I be so certain of my convictions when I hadn't even honestly considered the evidence? This book traces my journey through the furthest reaches of thought, a journey that took me through the realms of psychology, biology, physics, and belief. Could I find a place for faith in the modern world? Or was I right to cast it off as I did?
