Book Financial Strategy Analysis of Costco Inc

Download or read book Financial Strategy Analysis of Costco Inc written by Lu Zheng and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The retail industry began with traditional stores such as Walmart. These stores' main source of revenue was products that customers purchased, and the more products they sold, the more revenue they earned. Unlike Walmart, however, Costco is a membership wholesale club. It serves its membership the best quality product at the best price. Costco's philosophy is to treat employees well and satisfy its customers. Furthermore, as Amazon continues to grow, Costco, after the acquisition of Innovel, also joined the ranks of E-commerce, becoming a company integrating online and offline sales. In fact, according to Costco's financial statements, the company's margins can break a new high every year. Unexpectedly, a turning point came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Walmart sales at U.S. locations opened at least once a year decreased by 9.3% (D'Innocenzio, 2020). At the same time, because Costco offered the largest variety of commodities and the most affordable prices, its stores since the pandemic has attracted consumers. Given Costco's considerable commercial presence both offline and online, this thesis will compare Costco's internal and external factors, analyze why Costco is growing so rapidly, and why it is becoming the darling of the capital market.

Book Competition among the North American Warehouse clubs Costco Wholesalers versus Sam s Club versus BJ s Wholesalers

Download or read book Competition among the North American Warehouse clubs Costco Wholesalers versus Sam s Club versus BJ s Wholesalers written by Yasir Farabi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-07-06 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of New England, course: Strategic Management, language: English, abstract: The purpose of the report is to provide a detailed analysis of Costco industry external environment, critically analyse the company and provide a detailed analysis of resource and competitive position, identify the generic strategy Costco is using to achieve a source of competitive advantage and finally, develop a new five-year strategy for Costco. Costco Wholesale Corporation operates a chain of membership warehouses and with 592 warehouses across the globe; it is the largest and most profitable chain of its kind. Costco is partially vertically integrated with backward integration with Kirkland Signature Brand. External environment analysis using Porter’s five forces model identifies that the industry faces low threats of new entrants, supplier and buyer bargaining power with moderate rivalry among competitors along with high threat of substitutes. Industry faces new challenges because of shifting demographics, household downsizing, more educated consumers and new channel formats. A comparative analysis of rival’s market position shows that among its competitors, Costco possesses considerable market share. The generic competitive strategy adopted by Costco is that of the best-cost provider with low pricing, limited product selection and “treasure-hunt” merchandising being the three key elements of the company’s business strategy. Low prices, very low employee’s turnover, low overhead cost, loyal and affluent customer base, high inventory turnover, superb return policy, strong brand and scale of operations are found to be some of the key strengths of Costco. Some of the weaknesses identified as: less attractive store décor, inconsistent profit margins, unattractive location, not having self-checkout, primary focus on business customers, slow growth of its private label, and limited choice for customers. Online sales, increasing house remodelling expenditure and increased demand for technological products are some of the potential areas that Costco can tap. Threats are stemming mainly from slow economy due to financial crisis. To develop sustainable competitive advantage Costco can cut cost through operating excellence, innovation, speed, adopt triple bottom line accounting and has to successfully manage complexity arising from environment and its own operation. It can be hoped that Costco will continue its success as long as it keeps following its well thought out ideas and strategies.

Book Is Costco Better than Walmart A Comparative Analysis Based on Enterprise Marketing Efficiency

Download or read book Is Costco Better than Walmart A Comparative Analysis Based on Enterprise Marketing Efficiency written by Ramon Corona and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to analyze the operations of Walmart and Costco during the period from May 2006 until August 2008 from the standpoint of the efficiency of their operations in utilizing the resources to create shareholder's value, using key performance and enterprise marketing ratios. This study is relevant given the different business models and strategies used by both companies, as well as their intense rivalry in the retail industry. The results showed that Walmart is clearly superior in attracting investors willing to pay a premium for the stock, but Costco is far more efficient in the use of Selling, General and Administrative expenses to generate profits. Furthermore, based on the Maximum Earnings Market Share (MEMS) and Relative Earnings Productivity calculations, the results evidenced that Costco could have made $3.6 billion more in earnings, and Walmart could had earned $26.8 billion more for the same period, although in relative terms Costco was more efficient since it lost 20.9% of potential earnings, versus a much higher 28.3% of Walmart. Consequently, we can affirm that Costco is better than Walmart, based on relative earnings productivity. Moreover, this study proves that a higher market share does not necessarily generate higher profits, for it depends on the company's enterprise marketing efficiency.
