Book Guide to Fuel Treatments in Dry Forests of the Western U S

Download or read book Guide to Fuel Treatments in Dry Forests of the Western U S written by Morris C. Johnson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes a range of fuel treatments for representative dry forest stands in the Western U.S. dominated by ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, & pinyon pine. Six silvicultural options (no thinning; thinning from below to 50 trees per acre [tpa], 100 tpa, 200 tpa, & 300 tpa; & prescribed fire) are considered in combination with the surface fuel treatments (no treatment, pile & burn, & prescribed fire), resulting in a range of alternative treatments for each representative stand. Fuel treatment scenarios presented here can be used by resource managers to examine alternatives for Nat. Environ. Policy Act documents & other applications that require scientifically based info. to quantify the effects of modifying forest structure & surface fuels. Illustrations.

Book Guide to Fuel Treatments in Dry Forests of the Western United States

Download or read book Guide to Fuel Treatments in Dry Forests of the Western United States written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guide to Fuel Treatments analyzes a range of fuel treatments for representative dry forest stands in the Western United States with overstories dominated by ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and pinyon pine (Pinus edulis). Six silvicultural options (no thinning; thinning from below to 50 trees per acre [tpa], 100 tpa, 200 tpa, and 300 tpa; and prescribed fire) are considered in combination with three surface fuel treatments (no treatment, pile and burn, and prescribed fire), resulting in a range of alternative treatments for each representative stand. The Fire and Fuels Extension of the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FFE-FVS) was used to calculate the immediate effects of treatments on surface fuels, fire hazard, potential fire behavior, and forest structure. The FFEFVS was also used to calculate a 50-year time series of treatment effects at 10-year increments. Usually, thinning to 50 to 100 tpa and an associated surface fuel treatment were shown to be necessary to alter potential fire behavior from crown fire to surface fire under severe fire weather conditions. This level of fuel treatment generally was predicted to maintain potential fire behavior as surface fire for 30 to 40 years, depending on how fast regeneration occurs in the understory, after which additional fuel treatment would be necessary to maintain surface fire behavior. Fuel treatment scenarios presented here can be used by resource managers to examine alternatives for National Environmental Policy Act documents and other applications that require scientifically based information to quantify the effects of modifying forest structure and surface fuels.

Book Fuel Reduction in Residential and Scenic Forests

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three alternative thinning treatments for reducing fire hazard and improving forest health in scenic ponderosa pine forests of the Intermountain West are compared. Treatment cost and revenue, su, rface and crown fuel reduction, and aesthetic preference of the treatments are analyzed. The application of these ecosystem restoration treatments may have far reaching implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guide to Fuel Treatments analyzes a range of potential silvicultural thinnings and surface fuel treatments for 25 representative dry-forest stands in the Western United States. These stands are the focus of potential management activities intended to modify forest structure and fuel to reduce crown-fire hazard on public lands. The guide provides quantitative guidelines and visualizations for treatments based on scientific principles identified for reducing potential crown fires.

Book Assessment of Timber Availability from Forest Restoration Within the Blue Mountains of Oregon

Download or read book Assessment of Timber Availability from Forest Restoration Within the Blue Mountains of Oregon written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in forest management have detrimentally affected the economic health of small communities in the Blue Mountain region of Oregon over the past few decades. A build-up of small trees threatens the ecological health of these forests and increases wildland fire hazard. Hoping to boost their economies and also restore these forests, local leaders are interested in the economic value of timber that might be available from thinning treatments on these lands. This study identified densely stocked stands where thinning could provide a reliable source of wood, and examined the quantity, distribution, and economic value of the resulting timber for 5.5 million acres of national forest lands in eastern Oregon. Our findings verified local land managers' observations that the land base to support timber harvest targets in the region is smaller than anticipated in the past. Legal restrictions and current management practices have reduced the acreage available for harvest and mechanical restoration. Additionally, we found that on lands where active forestry is allowable, thinning of most densely stocked stands would not be economically viable. Findings from this analysis can help establish a common understanding of Blue Mountains vegetative and economic conditions for managers trying to restore the region's national forests.
