Mircea Eliade wrote that Blaga was the most gifted and critical original thinker in the history of Romanian philosophy. Because of historical circumstances, Blaga's philosophy has not become known outside of his own country, although within Romania it continues to be read and discussed. Were it to become known outside of Romania, Blaga's philosophy could provide interesting contributions to contemporary philosophical discussions. The thesis of this book is that Blaga's philosophy can make valuable contributions to contemporary Anglo-American philosophy. Esta visión, auspiciada por los partidarios de la Contrarrevolución, posteriormente se ha hecho canónica al asentarse los principios proclamados por los revolucionarios franceses. Con la perspectiva de esta visión sesgada, los escritos referentes a la religión se ven como añadidos discordantes, explicándose por causas subjetivas los que se presentan como disarmonías. Frente a esta interpretación, la que el autor propone atiende a aspectos culturales, antes que a aspectos subjetivos. Rousseau es fruto de un momento de transición. Frente al XVIII como el siglo de la razón, el pueblo es eminentemente religioso. La opción de Rousseau por el sentimiento religioso es una opción epistemológica pero a su vez es una opción social, una opción por el pueblo llano, frente a la razón auspiciada por la élite. Rousseau propone una revolución moral presidida por esquemas religiosos, aunque esta religión tiene que adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos: la metafísica debe ceder ante lo terrenal, o la moral primar frente a lo teológico. La religión civil, como religión patriótica, es expresión de su deísmo en el ámbito político.

Book excerpt: Liberation theologians either argue for the liberating character of popular religion or they vilify it as alienating and otherworldly. This book takes a comprehensive and in- depth look at the issues, questions, and problems that emerge from the debate among liberation theologians in Latin America. The heart of the book consists of a comparative analysis of two prominent theologians, Juan Carlos Scannone from Argentina, and Juan Luis Segundo from Uruguay, who take opposite positions. Scannone sees popular religion as essentially liberating because it is from the people. Segundo disparages popular religion as a mass phenomenon incapable of revolutionary change and looks forward to its demise. Candelaria synthesizes these contrary positions into a new paradigm for examining the question of popular religion and liberation. On the basis of this synthesis, he formulates a principle for articulating the relationship between popular religion and liberation and with special reference to the situation of Hispanics in the United States.

While contemporary historiography of science has studied the interactions between nation building and the construction of modern scientific and technological institutions, “science-and-religion” is still largely based on a supposed universal historiography in which global notions of “science” and of “religion” are seldom challenged. This book explores the interface between science, religion and nationalism at a local level, paying attention to the roles religious institutions, specific confessional traditions, or an undefined notion of “religion” played in the construction of modern science in national contexts: the use of anti-clerical rhetoric as scapegoat for a perceived scientific and technological backwardness; the part of religious tropes in the emergence of a sense of belonging in new states; the creation of “invented traditions” that included religious and scientific myths so as to promote new identities; the struggles among different confessional traditions in their claims to pre-eminence within a specific nation-state, etc. Moreover, the chapters in this book illuminate the processes by which religious myths and institutions were largely substituted by stories of progress in science and technology which often contributed to nationalistic ideologies.
