Book excerpt: Apart from the extant works of Cornelius Nepos, Plutarch and Suetonius, not a single ancient Greek or Roman biography has come down to us in its entirety, despite the great number of biographers from the early Hellenistic through the Imperial periods. Therefore, the study of the remaining testimonia and "fragments" - actually citations and excerpts passed on by later authors, and incomplete texts preserved on papyri - is indispensable for our knowledge and understanding of biographical writing in Antiquity. An important representative of the genre from the Hellenistic period is Hermippos of Smyrna, a member of the intellectual circle working in the Alexandrian Museion during the 2nd half of the 3rd century B.C. No less than 85 fragments have been preserved, dealing with the great names of Greek culture and civilization (the Seven Sages, legislators, philosophers, rhetoricians and other literary figures). These texts reveal Hermippos as a typical exponent of his working environment, with a strong penchant for sensational and remarkable stories as well as a firm basis in bookish erudition.After a short introductory chapter on the author's life and works in general, the present study offers a detailed presentation of the extant biographical material and concentrates further on Hermippos' choice of subjects, the organization of his oeuvre and his method as a biographer. The book concludes with four appendices, one of which provides the English translations of the surviving testimonia and fragments.

Certainly there is reason to know these poems for the light they shed on the intense partisanship and events of great moment surrounding the usurpation 1399-1400. It was during these parlous times that Gower composed most of the poems included here. All are important documents historically; but they are also poems admirable equally for their skill and craft. In Praise of Peace is in the same position as the shorter Latin works edited and translated in this volume: ignored, neglected, reduced, or relegated to the dusty realm of footnotes. But there is far more at work in this complex poem, as Gower's verse deftly weaves in and out of the historical, political, social, and religious contexts and controversies of its day. In tone, In Praise of Peace is, if not triumphant, determinedly optimistic. It offers a novel insight into the interplay and dynamic exchange of languages in the Italian peninsula, from the early fifteenth to the early seventeenth centuries. In particular, it examines the flexible linguistic practices of both the social and intellectual elite, and the men and women from the street. The point of departure of this project is the realization that most of the early modern speakers and authors demonstrate strong self-awareness as multilingual communicators. From the foul-mouthed gondolier to the learned humanist, language choice and use were carefully performed, and often justified, in order to overcome (or affirm) linguistic and social differences. The urban social spaces, the princely court, and the elite centres of learning such as universities and academies all shared similar concerns about the value, effectiveness, and impact of languages. As the contributions in this book demonstrate, early modern communicators — including gondoliers, preachers, humanists, architects, doctors of medicine, translators, and teachers—made explicit and argued choices about their use of language. The textual and oral performance of languages—and self-aware discussions on languages—consolidated the identity of early modern Italian multilingual communities.
