Book Don t Roll Your Eyes

Download or read book Don t Roll Your Eyes written by Ruth Nemzoff and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than two million couples wed every year in the United States, bringing together a whole new family unit. The extended family may now include a hard to please mother-in-law who criticizes her daughter-in-law's childrearing; or a patriarchal father-in-law who expects all the kin round the dinner table every Sunday; or a new spouse, who a year or decade out, still gets shellshock visiting the in-laws. If that wasn't cause enough for a stiff drink, more than a million couples divorce each year, creating hard to define family structures. How do families handle the inevitable friction and how do they make sense of evolving family relationships? Ruth Nemzoff, an expert in family dynamics, empowers family members across the generations to define and create lasting bonds, including how to: *Welcome a new in-law from a different culture and religion into your family. *Not let differences of politics or philosophy impact quality time with the extended family. *Respond to major life changes in an in-law's life, including financial crises, illnesses, or career changes. *Retain warm connections with in-laws even amidst divorce and remarriage. This is a must read for anyone dealing with a difficult in-law as well as anyone who will soon be welcoming a new member to their family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the twentieth-century, the United States implemented social policies targeting the needs of dependent parents – parents who were no longer able to work but lacked sufficient financial resources to support themselves. These parent dependency policies either encouraged or required family members, particularly adult children, to provide support as an alternative to government benefits. Debates over how best to support aging parents centered on conceptualizations of dependency and the moral obligations family owed their parents. Measures of dependency often inhibited aging Americans' access to benefits they needed, focusing instead on ensuring that they were, in fact, dependent and that other family resources were not available. Susan Stein-Roggenbuck highlights this understudied aspect of the modern US welfare state, highlighting the limited support provided to aging parents and the hardship they and their adult children endured in the efforts to minimize public expenditures.

Divided into four parts, the study considers the nature of family responsibility; constructions of children's responsibilities; shifting conceptions of family responsibilities; and family, responsibility and the law. The collection brings together leading experts from the disciplines of sociology, socio-legal studies and law to discuss responsibilities prior to birth, responsibilities for children, as well as responsibilities of children and of the state towards family members. The volume informs and challenges the developing conceptualization of responsibilities which arise in interdependent, intimate and caring relationships and their legal regulation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twenty-first century, a generation of children crossed the border from the United States to begin their lives anew in Mexico. While all were international migrants, their roots spread far and wide. Some were migrant returnees born in Mexico; others had only ever known a life in the United States. All children born in Mexico become returnees upon their arrival in Mexico, while children born in the United States arrive in Mexico for the first time in their lives. Yet in Mexico, the attempt to define these youths' affiliations in relation to their new home is much more complex, yielding new insights into our contemporary understanding of integration and belonging. This book is the product of twenty-five years' worth of rich, interdisciplinary dialogue and research on these children's trajectories, tracing their complex journeys of integration—and the lack thereof—into Mexican society and institutions.
