Book excerpt: Ryan Kendall is broken. He understands pain. He knows the hand of violence and the ache of loss. He knows what it means to fail those who need you. Being broken doesn't stop him wanting the one thing he can't have; Finlay Tanner. Her smile is sweet and her future bright. She's the girl he grew up with, the girl he loves, the girl he protects from the world, and from himself. At nineteen, Ryan leaves to join the Australian Army. After years of training he becomes an elite SAS soldier and deploys to the Afghanistan war. His patrol undertakes the most dangerous missions a soldier can face. But no matter how far he runs, or how hard he fights, his need for Finlay won't let go. Returning home after six years, one look is all it takes to know he can't live without her. But sometimes love isn't enough to heal what hurts. Sometimes people like him can't be fixed, and sometimes people like Finlay deserve more than what's left. This is a story about war and the cost of sacrifice. Where bonds are formed, and friendships found. Where those who are strong, fall hard. Where love is let go, heartache is born, and heroes are made. Where one man learns that the hardest fight of all, is the fight to save himself. This book is recommended for 18+ due to adult language and themes. Please note: K McCarthy is an Australian author and Australian spelling, language and slang has been used in this book.

Book excerpt: The Vietnam War opens the door for countless volumes of personal memoirs from the fighting men who waged it. Most are well crafted by the men who never thought they would write a book, especially one about Vietnam. Absolution is an exceptional work of one man's journey across those Asian battlefields in 1967 and 1968. Author Charles J. Boyle, takes you smack into the fighting from the first page of this authentic history and leaves you breathless all the way to the end. His descriptions of battle, how they were won or lost, and the men who fought them are spine chilling. Absolution is not just a story of the horror of war in Vietnam, but it is also one of love... love and admiration for the men who fought it. Thousands of young men, most of them teenagers, were thrust into the barbarity of that Asian civil war inadequately trained and initially armed with a defective weapon. In Vietnam, the foot soldier honed his "killing skills" by instinct and imagination. Out of Vietnam emerged a legion of men, struggling with an even greater battle, personal and private. They suffered a moral conflict that only those who have taken another life can comprehend. Then, undermining their gallant service in Vietnam, a powerful and biased news media created a myth that quickly spread across America. They said that the Vietnam-era soldier was a misfit; a perverse example of a military machine gone awry, wreaking havoc upon innocent civilians. Soon after the fighting was done in Vietnam, prominent news broadcasters coined a new phrase: "They only war we ever lost," they said. They want you to believe that the soldier lost the war, when, in fact, he lost only his youth, his innocence and sadly, many of his friends. Absolution will take you through that aftermath, offer solutions for the Post Traumatic Stress that these soldiers suffered, and will prove to you that these Vietnam Veterans were some of the finest soldiers that ever served America. Absolution is a remarkable resurrection of the Vietnam battlefield, told by an author who has "been there." It is an extraordinary and moving story, accurately portrayed, with all the valor, pain, and sacrifice that distinguished Vietnam from other wars. It is superb history and great reading. It will tear at your heart and make you want to cry.

Book excerpt: There is a clear lack in the Church of England of a coherent and thought through treatment of evil and the devil within the texts which the Church of England traditionally identifies as the repositories of doctrine. Focusing on initiation, healing and deliverence liturgies within the church, "Fight Valiantly" seeks to rectify that defecit, considering the Church of England's liturgical practice in the parishes, and highlighting the present danger of worshippers receiving an inconsistent and potentially incoherent account of the relationship with evil.

Book excerpt: If you love the MMA romances of Vi Keeland and Kendall Ryan, Sidney Halston’s Worth the Fight series will knock your socks off! In Fighting Dirty, a geek-chic cage fighter proves that appearances can be deceiving . . . and oh-so-tempting. With his preppy clothes and horn-rimmed glasses, Enzo Silva is the last dude anyone expects to find in a mixed martial arts gym. A wealthy Brazilian banker who never had to fight for anything, Enzo’s stuck in the amateur circuit—but he burns to make the pros. Maybe that explains the heat he feels whenever he’s around Jamie Lynn Calhoun. The pint-size, magenta-haired bartender with the Texas drawl is everything he’s not . . . and everything he craves. Tough as nails and independent to a fault, Jamie Lynn—JL to her friends—works hard to pay her bills and keep life simple. Enzo is doing his best to complicate that. Even though she likes to bust his balls, he’s got some kind of a nerdy-hot vibe that makes JL wonder if she might finally be able to let her guard down. It might do the boy some good to spend some time in her world, where blood, sweat, and victory are as sweet as the first taste of real love. Don’t miss Sidney Halston’s Panic series: PULL ME CLOSE | MAKE ME STAY | KISS ME BACK | WHAT ABOUT US And look for all of her hard-hitting MMA romances: AGAINST THE CAGE | FULL CONTACT | BELOW THE BELT | LAID OUT | FIGHTING DIRTY | STACKED UP Praise for Fighting Dirty “A sexy across-the-tracks romance . . . full of hot chemistry and some serious wooing!”—Heroes and Heartbreakers “If you love cracktastic drama and sexy times, this is for you!”—RT Book Reviews “The characters are entirely lovable, the banter is brilliant, the chemistry between them is indescribable, and the story itself is perfectly romantic. The Worth the Fight series is absolutely worth the read!”—FicCentral “Halston does hot well. . . . If you love an MMA touch and a passionately-in-love hero I recommend Fighting Dirty.”—Harlequin Junkie “A complete swoony escape! It’s a fun, sweet and deliciously sexy story about a woman who is tough and confident on the outside but soft, caring and, yes, a bit damaged on the inside, and a very predictable and too uptight man who discovered that even though they came from two very different worlds, they were perfect for each other.”—TJ Loves to Read Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taney County, located in southern Missouri on the Arkansas state line was rough country with rolling limestone hills and ridges. It was covered with trees, underbrush and rife with steep rocky cavernous ravines. Cool clear springs and creeks flowed out of these ravines and valleys and into the White River. During the Civil War and for many years after, outlaws took refuge there. The county government was in disarray, and nearly all crimes committed were totally ignored. After the Civil War, there was a land rush as the federal government expanded the Homestead Act. Families moved here from other parts of the country and acquired property. The locals, at first, considered them "outsiders" for they had no right, in their eyes, to tell them how they should live their lives. Some of the "newcomers" came from large cities and "civilized society" and they were astounded that this area, called God's Country by the natives, had virtually no judicial system. Many of the newcomers and, even those who had lived here for many years, were hoping for change. The event that sparked that change was the murder of a businessman, by the name of Jim Everett, and the subsequent trial in which his killer was acquitted. This unjust event spawned a vigilante band of night riders made up, initially, of notable men; attorneys, merchants, lawmen, and landowners. Stories were published in national newspapers and the group became notorious. Things, however, did not turn out as expected. This story takes place between 1883 and 1891. It is eight years of brutality and corruption that, to this day, remains burned into the memories of the people of southern Missouri. But this is not just about the Bald Knobbers. It is about the people and the land, life and death during hard uncertain times, families and their children, grandfathers and grandmothers, resistance and submission, hate and love, seasons and rural life in southern Missouri during the last part of the 19th century.

Book excerpt: "Professional athletes are pillars of their respective communities. They are heroes in the eyes of boys and girls and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents their community." The public loves a good scandal. Seeing someone fall from the pinnacle of success makes a great headline. No one knows that better than I do. What started out as a promising career in college football, spiralled into scandal and shame. But being a hero is easier said than done. Especially when there are those who expected to see the great Brody Madden fail. I craved nothing except being the best-willing to do anything to prove them wrong. But I went too far, and I tried too hard, and it broke me. "At the time of going to print, Jordan Elliott was unavailable for comment." I met Brody Madden in my senior year of college. An Australian native on an international scholarship, I was the female soccer sensation with stars in her eyes and no room for a hotshot wide receiver with a chip on his shoulder. But a heart bursting with ambition and a driving fire to succeed isn't made of stone. I became his strength, his obsession, and the greatest love of his life. Only I wasn't there when he needed me most. This is a story about love and a game that takes everything. Where the path to glory is paved with sacrifice. Where pressure makes you, or breaks you, and triumph is born in the ashes of failure. Where two people's end game will change everything. *** 18+ recommended. Book The Ballad of Lord Edward and Citizen Small

Download or read book The Ballad of Lord Edward and Citizen Small written by Neil Jordan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Academy Award-winning film director Neil Jordan comes an artful reimagining of an extraordinary friendship spanning the revolutionary tumult of the eighteenth century. South Carolina, 1781: the American Revolution. An enslaved man escaping to his freedom saves the life of Lord Edward Fitzgerald, a British army officer and the younger son of one of Ireland's grandest families. The tale that unfolds is narrated by Tony Small, the formerly enslaved man who becomes Fitzgerald's companion—and best friend. While details of Lord Edward's life are well documented, little is known of Tony Small, who is at the heart of this moving novel. In this gripping narrative, his character considers the ironies of empire, captivity, and freedom, mapping Lord Edward's journey from being a loyal subject of the British Empire to becoming a leader of the disastrous Irish rebellion of 1798. This powerful new work of fiction brings Neil Jordan's inimitable storytelling ability to the revolutions that shaped the eighteenth century—in America, France, and, finally, in Ireland.
