Book Citizenship and Cultural Policy

Download or read book Citizenship and Cultural Policy written by Denise Meredyth and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth of interest in the debates about what culture is, and who ′owns′ it, questions of cultural policy have moved to the forefront of wider dicussions of citizenship. This book unpicks the significance of culture for citizenship. Among the topics explored are the strengths and weaknesses of the ′civilizing mission′ of museums; the moralism of ′Third Way′ politics; the proper base for funding culture and the arts; the impact of globalization on culture and citizenship; the fantasies of freedom in Internet use; the tensions between human rights advocacy and citizenship; and the place of citizen ideals in governance. What emerges is a superb resource for analyzing the meaning of cultural policy in contemporary society. It both summarizes the state of the field and innovates new ways of thinking about culture and citizenship.

Download or read book The Literate Eye written by Rachel Teukolsky and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than focusing on German philosophy or the French avant-gardes, as many books on the history of aesthetics do, Teukolsky takes up British responses to modern art controversies, thus providing a unique view on the development of artistic forms and art history. She considers the canonical writing of authors like John Ruskin, Walter Pater, and Oscar Wilde alongside texts belonging to the rich field of Victorian print culture--gallery reviews, scientific treatises, satirical cartoons, advertisements, and early photography monographs among them. Spanning the years 1840 to 1910, her argument also adds substance to our understanding of the transition from Victorianism to modernism, a period of especially lively exchange between artists and intellectuals, here narrated with careful attention given to the historical particularities and real events that stamped their imprint on such interactions.

Book National Museums and Nation building in Europe 1750 2010

Download or read book National Museums and Nation building in Europe 1750 2010 written by Peter Aronsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe’s national museums have since their creation been at the centre of on-going nation making processes. National museums negotiate conflicts and contradictions and entrain the community sufficiently to obtain the support of scientists and art connoisseurs, citizens and taxpayers, policy makers, domestic and foreign visitors alike. National Museums and Nation-building in Europe 1750-2010 assess the national museum as a manifestation of cultural and political desires, rather than that a straightforward representation of the historical facts of a nation. National Museums and Nation-building in Europe 1750-2010 examines the degree to which national museums have created models and representations of nations, their past, present and future, and proceeds to assess the consequences of such attempts. Revealing how different types of nations and states – former empires, monarchies, republics, pre-modern, modern or post-imperial entities – deploy and prioritise different types of museums (based on art, archaeology, culture and ethnography) in their making, this book constitutes the first comprehensive and comparative perspective on national museums in Europe and their intricate relationship to the making of nations and states.

Book An Age of Equipoise Reassessing Mid Victorian Britain

Download or read book An Age of Equipoise Reassessing Mid Victorian Britain written by Martin Hewitt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Equipoise by W.L Burn was published in 1964 and became a central text in the canon of interpretations of the Victorian period. The book subsequently fell out of favour but recent claims to establish a new interpretative standard have, paradoxically, prompted reviewers to cast back to Burn's work as the orthodox standard against which such claims should be judged. The essays in this volume by British and American contributors all engage, to varying degrees, with the notion of 'equipoise' and how it can help to illuminate the mid-Victorian period in ways which alternative formulations cannot. Some of the chapters develop arguments embedded in Burn's own book; others take up issues largely absent in The Age of Equipoise, such as the position of children, Britain's interaction with the wider world, and the threats the period experienced to its concept of masculine identity. Together the essays demonstrate the intricacy and turbulence of the forces of cohesion in Victorian society, along with the success of that culture in achieving a working, if shifting, modus vivendi. Moreover, they substantiate the argument that, whatever the limitations of Burn's work, 'equipoise' deserves rehabilitation as a powerful conceptual framework for making sense of mid-Victorian Britain. About the Editor: Martin Hewitt is Director of the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies and editor of the Journal of Victorian Culture. With Robert Poole he has recently produced an edition of The Diaries of Samuel Bamford, 1858-61 (Sutton, 2000).
