Book excerpt: This carefully crafted and collectible volume tells the intimate story of Peter, Paul, and Mary and their music, in their words and with iconic images that follow their passionate, fifty-year journey to the center of America’s heart. Photographs, many rare and never before published, taken over five decades by some of the world’s top photographers, follow them from their earliest performances in the 1960s, when Mary was the most desired, beautiful, and charismatic performer and a new role model for women. Follow the trio as they lead America to discover the passionate soul of folk music. Join the struggle for racial equality, social justice, and freedom in this memorable journey, from the historic 1963 March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr., to the trio’s appearance before a half million people in 1969 to end the Vietnam War, to their singing at the Hollywood Bowl for Survival Sunday in 1978, helping to launch the anti-nuke movement, the world’s first international environmental movement. Through these images, readers will feel and almost hear the trio’s songs calling for a more caring, better world as they performed with a courage and conviction that became for so many the embodiment and soundtrack of their generation’s awakening to conscience, to activism, and to a new dream for all of humankind. Peter, Paul, and Mary’s songs of defiant hope and a certain unmasked innocence are still a powerful part of our American consciousness, and this book reenacts the history of how the trio marked many lives with their indelible stamp of honesty of the sort we all yearn to recapture and recreate today—for ourselves, our children, and the generations to come.

Book The Renaissance of Girls Education in England A Record of Fifty Years Progress

Download or read book The Renaissance of Girls Education in England A Record of Fifty Years Progress written by Alice Zimmern and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To all whom it may interest, the author dedicates this brief summary of the events which have wrought a peaceful revolution among us during the last fifty years. Among the many changes of the half-century, the great transformation in the education of women surely deserves a record. The workers have been many, the help given of various kinds, yet no event is isolated, for all are links in one chain of progress. Fifty years ago a few far-sighted men and women gave the impetus; we who harvest where they sow may like to be reminded, in this season of retrospects, of the great debt we owe them. What has touched the lives of so many women is the concern of all, and though the author shall be proud indeed if my book proves welcome to teachers, the author should wish most of all to address herself to that old and long-tried friend of literature, the general reader. If he, or she, can be persuaded, to spend an hour or two, learning the past and present of the education of our girls, then the author's purpose will have been accomplished.

Book Fifty Years of Religious Studies in Canada

Download or read book Fifty Years of Religious Studies in Canada written by Harold Coward and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canadian universities in the early 1960s, no courses were offered on Hinduism, Buddhism, or Islam. Only the study of Christianity was available, usually in a theology program in a church college or seminary. Today almost every university in North America has a religious studies department that offers courses on Western and Eastern religions as well as religion in general. Harold Coward addresses this change in this memoir of his forty-five-year career in the development of religious studies as a new academic field in Canada. He also addresses the shift from theology classes in seminaries to non-sectarian religious studies faculties of arts and humanities; the birth and growth of departments across Canada from the 1960s to the present; the contribution of McMaster University to religious studies in Canada and Coward’s Ph.D. experience there; the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at the University of Victoria; and the future of religious studies as a truly interdisciplinary enterprise. Coward’s retrospective, while not a history as such, documents information from his varied experience and wide network of colleagues that is essential for a future formal history of the discipline. His story is both personally engaging and richly informative about the development of the field.

Book Shelby Mustang Fifty Years

Download or read book Shelby Mustang Fifty Years written by Colin Comer and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate America’s premier performance car! From the original Shelby Mustang GT350 to today’s 700-plus horsepower GT500, Carroll Shelby and Ford Motor Co. have defined high-performance with their Shelby Mustangs. Shelby built his Mustangs from 1965 until 1970, at a time when it seemed that the muscle car was a dying breed. Then an odd thing happened—people began to realize the classic nature of the car almost as soon as Shelby stopped building them and prices began to climb. By the end of the decade, the Shelby Mustang had become one of the first muscle cars to attain classic status, along with the price hike that went along with that recognition. Prices continued to rise into the next century; a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 fetched $451,000 at auction in 2006, at which time production of new Shelby Mustangs began for the first time in 36 years. Since then prices have cooled a bit, but not nearly as much as they have for other muscle cars; Shelby Mustangs still occupy the top slot at most auctions and Shelby continues to build the popular modern versions of the Mustang today. Shelby Mustang: Fifty Years, lavishly illustrated with rare historic photography and modern color images, tells the story of these amazing cars, from the initial collaboration with Ford to today’s record-setting high-tech muscle cars.
