This book was released on 2018-08-12 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Three-Part Studies Within the Compass of an Octave for Sight-Singing Classes During my long experience as a teacher of sight-singing I have constantly felt the want of exercises far more interesting than those usually placed before the student. There is always, moreover, a great difficulty in dividing voices into parts for complete harmony in the ordinary sight-singing class, owing to the preponderance of, for instance, basses at one time and tenors at another, or the occasional absence of one entire part. For this reason, therefore, it is some time before the student has the opportunity of taking his part in harmonised exercises. This book was released on 2016-12-18 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. During my long experience as a teacher of Sight-Singing I have constantly felt the want of exercises far more interesting than those usually placed before the student. There is always, moreover, a great difficulty in dividing voices into " parts " for complete harmony in the ordinary sight-singing class, owing to the preponderance of, for instance, basses at one time and tenors at another, or the occasional absence of one entire part. For this reason, therefore, it is some time before the student has the opportunity of taking his part in harmonized exercises, and of holding his own against other parts, a source of great interest to each singer. To meet this want, the following exercises are all written in complete harmony, each part within the compass of one octave, C to C, and therefore within easy range of all voices, male and female; and while care has been taken not to exceed the compass of the octave, each part has been so arranged as to extend the whole compass of the octave, thus giving the student, as far as possible, the practice of extended intervals. The Tonic Sol-fa notation is placed under the ordinary notation in order to increase the general utility of the book....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Studies in Sight Singing: Selected From Second Year Music and Third Year Music of the Hollis Dann Music Course The teacher should not forget that this tone and rhythm study is only one side of the work. The development which comes from the singing of songs is vitally important. Without this, the training in music is one-sided and mechanical. Only through the proper singing of suitable songs will a love and appreciation of the beauti ful in music be awakened and cultivated. It is also by means of song that the rhythmic and tonal sense is quickened and developed. It is all-important that correct habits of tone production be acquired during the first year in school, and that the head tone which is so delightful in children's singing, shall be preserved and not allowed to deteriorate. To attain this vitally important result, the teacher must maintain the same standard in all the singing. The tone quality should be just as good for the singing of the sight reading material as for the rote songs. The teacher must have the ability to discriminate between good and bad tone production, and the Skill to eliminate bad tonal conditions. Teachers should use their own discretion as to when to go on from one lesson to the next, since for some children, the same lesson may have to be worked through several times. A short time (say 15 minutes) spent on these lessons every day will be found more valuable than a longer time once or twice a week. Ear-tests of a series of notes to be written down in the children's notebooks are given regularly. The use of well-known folk songs for practice is highly recommended.

Each Lesson is divided into three Sections: Section A contains the exercises for written work, applying Harmony to Melodic Construction and Harmoniza tion, and the study of Form; Section B, the exercises for Harmonic, Interval and Melodic Dictation; Section C, the exercises in Singing Intervals, Rhythms, Chords and sight-reading.
