Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tenth Biennial Report: Being the Thirty-Fifth and Thirty-Sixth Annual Reports of the State Board of Health of the State of Kansas; June 30, 1918 to July 1, 1920 To the Governor of Kansas and Members of the State Board of Health Greeting: During the fiscal year of 1918 and 1919 events have occurred of such an unprecedented character as to render this year noteworthy in the health annals of the state. A malignant epidemic of influenza kept the country and the state in three succeeding waves, accompanied by the high est morbidity and mortality that this country has ever seen, striking terror to the hearts of the people and rendering futile, in a large degree, efforts of health officers to stay its progress or to mitigate its malignant character. A mere recital of the unprecedented number of cases of sickness or the huge total of deaths due to the epidemic and its complications but faintly pictures the apprehension and anxiety of the people, the almost total suspension of social activities, the closure of schools and churches and all public places of assemblage, the stagnation of business, and the utter confusion and chaos of the whole social fabric of the country, en tailing enormous economic losses which accompanied this unprecedented and malignant epidemic. The first wave of the epidemic occurred in the early spring of 1918, although at the time it was generally unrecognized. The disease was comparatively mild in character and was unattended with the frightful mortality which characterized the second and third waves. The second wave apparently started in the United States army train ing camps in Massachusetts in August, rapidly spread over the country, moving westward, appearing in Camp Funston in this state in the latter part of September, from which focal point it spread throughout the state, attended by a high rate of mortality. The third wave occurred in the late winter and early spring of 1920, again spreading rapidly over the state, but, on the whole, milder in character and being attended by a lower rate of morbidity and mortality, except in a few localities, where the reverse seemed to be true. This was noticeably true in the following counties: Edwards, Pratt, Kingman and Rawlins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Biennial Report or the Twenty-Third and Twenty-Fourth Annual Reports: Of the State Board of Health of the State of Kansas, From January 1, 1907, to December 31, 1908 The general health conditions Of the state are similar to those of past years. There have been no unusual epidemics, and the death rate is practically the same as it has been in the past few years. There is, however, a growing mortality from a disease not generally considered to be an epidemic disease, yet which registers such enormous morbidity and mortality figures as to be properly classed among epidemic diseases, and which Should excite our apprehension for the future Of our citizenship. I refer to the great scourge Of mankind, tuberculosis. From re ports received at this Office from health Officers and assessors it appears that there Were somewhere between 1200 and 1500 deaths from tuberculosis in 1907, the actual number reported by health officers being 995. Due to our inefficient and cumber some system Of collection of vital statistics, it is clearly ap parent that several hundred deaths from this disease have never been recorded, and thus it is safe to assume, based upon the reports actually received, that our death rate is as above indicated. In arriving at the number Of cases of tuberculosis existing in a given population, sanitarians have placed several figures for such computation, running all the way from four to ten. That is to say, there are from four to ten cases existing for every death that occurs during the year. Using, then, the lowest figure that is given by experts in the computation of the number Of cases existing in Kansas at the present time, we have four times 1500, or 6000. I believe that this is a moderate estimate and entirely within the bounds Of the actual facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Biennial Report, or the Nineteenth and Twentieth Annual Reports, of the State Board of Health of the State of Kansas: From January 1, 1903, to December 31, 1904 Of the infectious diseases that usually prevail at this time of the year, the most prevalent in the state this winter has been scarlet fever. While it has not become a serious epidemic in any locality it has been general throughout the' state. The community where most complaint has come from scarlet fever has been in and around Baldwin, Douglas county. There was complaint about lack of rigid quarantine made by one or two physicians against the county health emeer, but on his attention being called to same by letter from your secretary he at once looked up the cases and established quarantine. The same thing was true in Marshall county. Complaint came from the mayor of Axtell that the health officer of Nemaha county, adjoining Marshall, was giving no attention to quarantine regulations in cases of scarlet fever that existed there. I sent the health oflicer of whom complaint was made the following letter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
