Book excerpt: The Fifteenth United States Army was the last Allied army to enter the conflict against Germany, arriving on the Continent during the latter part of December 1944. Yet during the few short months of operations, it met with and solved a host of varied problems in a singulary efficient manner. The Fifteenth Army shared in the preparation of detailed plans for the occupation of the Bremen-Bremerhaven Enclave; it conducted the Meuse River survey, with the view of assuming responsibility for the defense of that line in the event of an enemy breakthrough; it prepared the Berlin District Plan. It received, trained, and equipped organizations newly arrived from the United Kingdom and the United States, and it rehabilitated, re-equipped, and reinforced various units that had suffered heavy losses during the Ardennes Campaign. During the month of April 1945, the Fifteenth Army conducted operations on two fronts: the 66th Infantry Division containing German forces within the Lorient-St. Nazaire Pockets, while the XXII Corps aided in the greatest double-envelopment in the history of military tactics -- that of the Ruhr Pocket. On 7 and 8 May, the army received the surrender of the German forces in Lorient, St. Nazaire, and the surrounding territory. As the advance of the American armies proceeded eastward from the Rhine, the Fifteenth Army occupied, organized, and governed the Rheinprovinz, Saarland, Pfalz, and that portion of Hessen west of the Rhine river. Toward the end of May, it organized the Rheinprovinz Military District Provincial Government, and established an effective civil administration within the entire area. Finally, its work completed, the Fifteenth United States Army passed control of its area to the British and the French, relinquishing the territory held by the XXII Corps by 15 June and that held by the XXIII Corps by 10 July 1945. Book excerpt: In 1944 and 1945, Tom Faulkner was a B-24 pilot flying out of San Giovanni airfield in Italy as a member of the 15th Air Force of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Only 19 years old when he completed his 28th and last mission, Tom was one of the youngest bomber pilots to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Between September 1944 and the end of February 1945, he flew against targets in Hungary, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Yugoslavia. On Tom’s last mission against the marshalling yards at Augsburg, Germany, his plane was severely damaged, and he had to fly to Switzerland where he and his crew were interned. The 15th Air Force generally has been overshadowed by works on the 8th Air Force based in England. Faulkner’s memoir helps fill an important void by providing a first-hand account of a pilot and his crew during the waning months of the war, as well as a description of his experiences before his military service. David L. Snead has edited the memoir and provided annotations and corroboration for the various missions.

While commanded by US Lieutenant General Mark Clark, from the outset one of its two Corps was the X (British) Corps; the other V1 (US) Corps. The multi-national composition of Fifth Army is demonstrated by the French Expeditionary Corps, the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, the South African Armoured Division, the Italian Co-Belligerent forces, formations from the New Zealand Corps and the 4th Indian Division. Clark’s Fifth Army was itself part of the Fifteenth Army Group, commanded by Field Marshal Alexander. Alexander’s light and diplomatic touch oiled the wheels of this uneasy arrangement but inevitably there were tensions and disagreements that threatened success. The low priority accorded to Italy as compared with OVERLORD and NW Europe did not help matters. Seen as a backwater, crack units were taken away and insufficient resources allocated to the Italian Campaign. This combined with the tenacity of the Germans, the difficult terrain and the harsh climate caused real problems. Allied morale was at times particularly brittle and desertion rates worryingly high. This superbly researched book objectively examines the performance of Fifth Army against this complex and troublesome backdrop. The author’s findings make for authoritative and fascinating reading and give food for thought about multinational cooperation in more recent conflicts.
