Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chip seals have been widely used as a pavement maintenance surface treatment due to its competitive cost and construction time. Recently, the research team developed a rubberized chip seal where natural aggregate is replaced with crumb rubber obtained from recycled tires. During this study, a total of 108 laboratory specimens and a field chip seal section with different crumb rubber replacement ratios were investigated. Aggregate macrostructure, retention, and skid resistance were measured. The crumb rubber showed a remarkable performance in aggregate retention measured using the Vialit and Pennsylvania tests. The values of the mean texture depth of rubberized chip seal specimens were significantly higher than those of the conventional chip seal. Finally, while a reduction in the British Pendulum Number (BPN) was recorded with an increase in the crumb rubber replacement ratio immediately after construction, after a period of more than a year of service life in the experimental section road, the rubberized chip seal segments recorded a much higher BPN compared to that of the conventional chip seal segment. Furthermore, it is recommended also to increase the curing time for chip seal, regardless of aggregate type, to at least six hours to improve the performance of the chip seal.

Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years, a surface performance-graded (SPG) specification for chip seal binders was developed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) using laboratory measurements and visual field performance (aggregate loss and bleeding) of 75 highway sections (HSs). The SPG was established in an effort to extend the service life of chip seals by providing a binder selection method that accounts for differences in climate. TxDOT recently commenced a statewide implementation effort of the SPG specification. The initial activities include (a) reviewing laboratory and field performance of HSs built in 2011 based on the latest version of the SPG specification, newly generated SPG requirement map, and revised surface condition index calculation; (b) characterizing binders from HSs built in 2013 and monitoring their field performance; (c) proposing additional parameters to complement the SPG specification; and (d) predicting bending beam rheometer (BBR) creep stiffness values from frequency sweep results. When comparing the expected performance of the binders (based on their SPG grade) against actual field performance after the first year in service, 80 percent of the HSs built in 2011 correlated well. Individual SPG properties were compared to corresponding field performance for 2013 chip seal binders in terms of aggregate loss or bleeding. Unexpected field performance from the Amarillo District largely contributed to poor correlation between the BBR creep stiffness properties and field performance in terms of aggregate loss for 2013 HSs. A phase angle parameter was introduced in the SPG specification to ensure modified binders contain sufficient polymers. The prediction of BBR creep stiffness values via a frequency sweep test was not reliable at colder temperatures, even when a 4-mm dynamic shear rheometer plate test was used. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.

Book excerpt: Chip sealing typically consists of covering a pavement surface with asphalt emulsion into which aggregate chips are embedded. The asphalt emulsion cures through the evaporation of water, thus providing mechanical strength to adhere to the pavement while keeping the aggregate chips in place. The curing time for the chip seal depends on many factors, such as the asphalt emulsion and aggregate types, aggregate moisture content, emulsion and aggregate application rates, and environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, and solar radiation). Currently, no field technique is available to quantify when sufficient mechanical strength has developed in the binder to allow traffic on a newly sealed roadway or to remove the surplus aggregate from a fresh chip seal through brooming. Instead such decisions are made by empirical factors that rely on the experience of field personnel.This study investigated the use of electrical resistance measurements to develop a quantitative method for determining the optimum curing time for chip seals. First, full frequency, two-point, uniaxial electrical impedance spectroscopy was used to characterize the electrical properties of asphalt emulsions and various asphalt emulsion-aggregate combinations. The laboratory test results suggest a relationship between the changes in the electrical resistance of an asphalt emulsion and the amount of curing that has occurred in the system. Additionally, standardized mechanical strength tests and full-scale field trials were conducted using a variety of materials. The electrical properties of the fresh seals were quantified using a handheld electrical device with a two-point probe to measure resistance. The findings suggest that chip seal systems gain significant mechanical strength when the initial electrical resistance measurement increases by a factor of 10. Finally, the implementation of the methodology for five full-scale chip seal projects in Indiana indicates that curing times for the chip seals range from 3.5 to 4.0 hours.
