Book Field Evaluation of Hazardous Waste Site Bioassessment Protocols

Download or read book Field Evaluation of Hazardous Waste Site Bioassessment Protocols written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals were: (1) determine the variability (both within and between laboratories) for the various bioassay procedures using contaminated soil samples from the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA); (2) assess variability within and between plots for several assessment techniques (for sampling small mammals, plants, insects including honeybees and microarthropods) so that field studies could be designed to detect a defined biotic change; (3) establish three field plant transects which are apparently (a) contaminated, (b) appear contaminated and (c) could serve as a control; (4) assess the feasibility (in the laboratory) of using Basin F water to contaminate RMA soil artificially, and to supply information for the design of a field plot study in 1983; (5) attempt to obtain preliminary data on any promising field or laboratory bioassessment techniques not currently mentioned in the statement of work; and (6) obtain field data to assess the ecological status of RMA lakes and compare these observations to results from bioassessment testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques for Wildlife Investigations emphasizes the design of field studies and the statistical inferences that can be made from observed changes in animal abundance and populations. The information presented here is of value not only for wildlife management but also for social and economic decision-making related to the environmental effects of human activities on wildlife populations. Biologists, ecologists, biometricians, fish and game managers will find this book invaluable in their work. - Provides quantitative criteria for designing effective field experiments - Offers statistical methods for analyzing mark recapture data - Gives examples and recommendations for implementing field studies

Book Ecological Assessment of Hazardous Waste Sites

Download or read book Ecological Assessment of Hazardous Waste Sites written by James T. Maughan and published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company. This book was released on 1993 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Assessment of Hazardous Waste Sites James T. Maughan, Ph.D. This book provides the essential technical and regulatory information necessary to plan, prepare, and implement an ecological assessment of a hazardous waste site in compliance with current government regulations. James T. Maughan, with input from several contributing authors, presents a precise, step-by-step approach to analysis of ecological resources present on-site, their risk from contamination, and the potential for remediation and restoration. All aspects of the book are related back to a clearly-stated definition of objectives and needs for ecological assessment of hazardous waste sites. Focusing on both traditional and experimental methods for the evaluation of a hazardous waste site, the book examines the overall approach to assessments as well as techniques for evaluating three prominent aspects of ecological assessments: terrestrial pathways of contaminants, sediment quality and contamination, and toxicity testing. Dr. Maughan catalogs and clarifies the appropriate regulations and agency expectations that must be met in order to avoid noncompliance. In addition, the author includes detailed case studies which elaborate the concepts and techniques of ecological assessment. Ecological Assessment of Hazardous Waste Sites is ideal as both a reference and a training text for ecologists, other biologists, and natural resource planners lacking extensive experience in hazardous waste investigations. Engineers, geologists, chemists, and managers with hazardous waste experience but little or no experience in ecology will find this an invaluable source: This book is of use to a wide cross-section of professionals, educators, and students in the environmental consulting industry and the environmental regulatory community.
